we don't know the circumstances of the accident, but considering his sentence was suspended, I doubt it was particularly heinous. mostly, this guy sounds like a dope- blew his probation somehow, put back in, did more time- with good behavior... so transferred to lower security place and escapes. not sure how much more time he had left- but couldn't have been too much given that he was essentially in prison for violating his probation. and then lives for 56 years without causing any legal hiccups. not exactly a high priority, dangerous criminal, IMO.
Prison is probably a decent retirement home, they might not even drain your assets in prison to pay expenses. I'm gonna have to look into that option for the parents.
