So I was listening to 670 the Score out of Chicago today and thought this was a pretty interesting comment.

With an NFL expert on the radio they were talking about who he was going to vote for for the NFL MVP. They talked about Manning has done and how he likely would be the comeback player of the year but then talked about AP. The funny thing was he was pushing for and saying AP at this point would be who he leaned towards in his vote for MVP.

Why?

Well AP is putting up high school numbers. He went on to talk about a player I never heard of in the chicago area from the past but how he basically had a line of Samoans and not the small Samoans but the huge Samoans blocking for him and torched teams for 10 yards a carry. AP was doing this against some of the greatest athletes in the country. Even with that the hosts, like most people, put up hesitations talking about the Broncos and Manning more. The expert then defended his position also by saying while the QB might be the most valuable position on the field and if you only go by saber-metrics and value based algorithms a non-QB would probably never win MVP again.

So it brought up a great point that sorta like the Heisman could become do you think a non-QB will ever win NFL MVP again?

In the 50+ years of the award presented Associated Press:

Defensive player has only won it 2 times

Place Kicker 1 time

Wide Receiver 0 times

Running Back 16 times (2 times since 2001)

Moseley was 20 of 21 on field goals that season. There is a good case for Dan Fouts and I would not be surprised if he finished 2nd in the voting.

Might as well call it the MVQBORRB award. No WR will ever win it since the credit will go to the QB. I suppose a defensive player could win it again but it would take an absolute dominating season (like Lawrence Taylor) to do it.

Nice kicking but the Redskins would still have made the playoffs and won the SB with an average kicker.

no clear cut QB to select and a defensive player has a dominant season for a 14-2 or 15-1 team with a mediocre QB is what it would likely take

Perhaps a DE or LB who could set the sacks record, on a #1 or #2 seed team with a dominant D, and roughly average QBs?

This was a strike season and I guess kickers are probably less affected by a several week layoff than any other position players are. Still very odd to see that.
