Furries?? (1 Viewer)

My daughter (7th grade) had a "furry" in her class.  She was weirded out a bit.  It's been interesting to say the least trying to help her navigate adolescence when it's just kind of an "anything goes" mentality even at the Jr high level......not a child psychologist, but seems more like mental health issues at that age.

If ur an adult, and you wanna be freaky deaky, and ur not hurting anyone, go for it.

Huh. Interesting. I'm not even sure how to process what to think about that. I mean, I assume she isn't hurting anybody so no big deal, but... huh.

Wow, on second thought 7th grade?? 7th Woz did everything he could to be normal/cool and that was still an awful year for bullying. Kids are horrible in 7th grade. Anybody in my class wearing a furry costume would have been bullied, and very likely physically beaten, just mercilessly.

Maybe cuz it's sexual in nature.

My daughter is young for her grade, so many  of her classmates are prolly close to a year older than her......she's also kind of akward, and a lot of the overt sexual expression stuff makes her uncomfortable....and some kids have been very aggressive about all of it......we are helping her navigate it.

Yeah my daughters aren't there yet, thankfully. Tough conversations.

So I was in Rosemont, IL this past weekend for a softball coaches convention.. As we were pulling into the hotel, it was apparent that some other type of convention was going on.  We saw a ton of people dressed up in animal costumes, walking around.  After a little google research, there was a "Midwest FurFest 2021" going on at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.

After looking at the convention schedule, it was "interesting" to say the least..

Now I'm not looking down on these people or trying to insinuate they aren't anything other than normal....but I'm just trying to understand.  I'm taking the Ted Lasso approach, "be curious not judgemental"

Anybody have any experience in this situation?
Closest thing I have.

I did promotional work for a company that involved driving a themed car all around the, East Coast, Southeast area the summer of 2004. Me and a co-worker, long time friend.

Our travels took us near New Orleans so we decided to drive a bunch to set us up for a couple extra days in The Big Easy. We pull in with our cartoon car. People everywhere, partying, pretty much chaos. I go to check in, figure out the parking situation.

The lady at the front desk asks me if I am there for the festivities. I say no just work. She gets this funny look on her face. I ask her what is going on and she tells me it's "Southern Decadence Week". Not sure what this is, pre smartphone where you know everything about everything.

She tells me it's the gay man's Mardi Gras.

I look around the hotel and it is on. Dudes in biker outfits, sailor outfits, chaps the whole deal. Some pretty odd elevator rides that weekend

Couple questions...

This kid dresses up everyday, or occasionally?

You think the kid is doing it for sexual reasons? Why do you think that?

I think this is a can o worms I should prolly just avoid, honestly.  My family will approach this crazy world in the way we see fit.  I just want my kid to have good self esteem, be a kind person, and be a successful adult.....it feels like there are forces at work making that more difficult than it should be.....beyond the typical Jr high bull####

is the furry kid one of these forces... or are we talking dark-magic, demonic stuff?

middle school is extra rough- various stages of puberty, hormones going insane, reasoning abilities under-developed- tough time. I agree... I want my kids to be good inward and outward. we haven't encountered any furries yet- but I feel like the more the kids (10-14) are exposed to that isn't innately hateful, dangerous or harmful (drugs, extreme risks, violence) the better. a furry classmate... for me at least... isn't going to hurt my kids- other than maybe feeling bad for laughing.

I don't wanna get too much into all this, but imo, theres way too much free-range parenting happening in our society.  Boundaries need to be set.  Kids need guidance, and an example.  Less indulging of children's every wish.  I'm looking at the big picture of how I see these things affecting my family.

Also, I understand that there are plenty of kids who were pretty much raising themselves over COVID.  That has created a powder keg of behaviors that we are seeing play out at school.......add in the fact that schools really have very little means to discipline anymore, and you have one giant cluster......fwiw, my wife and I support our teachers, and staff, and feel they should have more ability to discipline kids.

Sorry if I got off in the weeds on the furry thing.....like I said, I'm looking at the big picture
