The Broncos have traded guard Montrae Holland to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round draft selection in 2010, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

Holland joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent in March 2007 after spending the first four years of his career with the New Orleans Saints. He started all 16 games at right guard last year for the Broncos.

I though Holland provided good depth at guard, and was even the projected started heading into camp. I guess coming in 25 pounds overweight put him in Shanny's doghouse. This is good news for whichever OL was on the 53-man bubble, as another spot has just opened up.

After reviewing the Broncos current depth chart, I think this trade means rookie Kory Lichtensteiger has a much better chance of making the team instead of getting waived to the practice squad.

How is this relevant to fantasy football?

NFL news is permitted in the Shark Pool. Not sure what the big deal is?
No big deal, I was curious how it pertained to fantasy football, thought I missed something.

Thanks for the bump, Chachi.RBs run through holes that are made by the offensive lineman in front of them. QBs have time to drop back and pass based on blocks made by the offensive lineman in front of them. When a starting offensive lineman gets injured, the next guy on the depth chart comes in and plays that position in their stead. The particular players, their skills and positions, as well as their location on the depth chart, is all part of a bigger picture that allows the skilled fantasy football owner to make judgments about players' situations and opportunities.Hope this helps.

Some commentary from ESPN's Bill Williamson:

Montrae Holland ate himself out of Denver.

The Broncos dealt Holland Thursday to Dallas for a fifth-round pick in 2010. Holland, Denver's starting right guard last season, was set to be the starter again this season after a productive first year with the Broncos in 2007 in which he earned a two-year contract extension.

Yet, Holland showed up to training camp more than 20 pounds overweight. Denver coach Mike Shanahan wouldn't allow Holland to practice for the first couple of weeks of training camp. Holland's situation allowed third-year player Chris Kuper to take over in practice. Kuper took advantage and stole the job away from the dieting Holland.

In recent days, Denver decided they could move away from Holland altogether and started talking trade with Dallas.

Holland is a better fit in Dallas than Denver, going 6-5 325. As mentioned, Dallas' starting G is out 6 weeks. His backups had been looking pretty bad, getting pushed back into the backfield with ease. Dallas likely got a real good look at Holland during the Boys/Bronco's joint practice sessions a couple of weeks ago.
