Gabbert or Newton (1 Viewer)

In upcoming fantasy drafts this year, if you're picking later in the first round (and you have a need for a QB), and you had the choice of picking either Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton, which one would you pick?

(I would love to have Matt Waldman, Sig, Cecil or EBF chime in on this one.)

Thanks for everyone's time.

If you are in need of help at QB in a dynasty league, the rookie draft probably won't really help you for 2-3 years. Rookie QBs don't produces FF starter caliber numbers for a couple years at least, in most cases. If you are just getting older at QB and want to infuse some youth into that position for your team, obviously the rookie draft can be a great way to do that.

I'm thinking that most folks like Newton's upside more and I'd expect him to be a late first round pick in a lot of dynasty leagues… and Gabbert might go in the early second, like 3-5 picks after Newton. Something like that.

If I had to pick one right now, without knowing where they land in the NFL, I'd probably take Newton.

depends on your league as well. Mine is a start 2 QB league and in years past RBs and QBs go quick so late 1st round you probably wont have a shot at either. You are probably looking at the #4 or 5 QB that late or you are taking WR/TEs....

I personally am not to excited to take Newton (i need QBs and have an early pick). Since there is no clear cut top guy and most seem to be similar with pluses and minuses (depending on who you read), I am looking at where they go and what they have to work with as far as team talent to make a decision.

I am in a 2 QB league as well and the better QBs go early but most of the depends on Situation. The last three top drafted QBs have gone to dome teams and have gone 1.3 each year.

I think Gabbert is stable but not so much upside whereas Cam Newton is a swing for the fences pick that could turn into a Vick like production for a few years or Russell his way out of the NFL.

I would like to get a QB but do not want a Carolina, Buffalo or Cincinatti QB. If any of those three take either Gabbert or Newton I am less interested. If one falls to Arizona at #5 and they draft a QB then I am very interested.

I tend to side more with those who see Cam's upside as a better Rothlesberger. Cam will need to learn to use his size and athleticism to extend plays, not make plays. I don't see him cranking out as frequent long runs as Vick because he's not as fast. However, he's fast enough and strong enough to still be a very good rusher (mainly taking advantage of broken lanes). Despite the critics, his passing is good enough to get started. With a solid QB coach he could be a superstar. However, in the wrong system with the wrong coach, he might not be used and taught effectively. He's certainly unique.Cam's downside is not as low as everyone is making out. He has no more bust potential than anyone else in the draft, yet he comes with much more upside in my opinion. I will say though that if he goes to Carolina, all bets are off. Buffalo or Arizona would be quite interesting.

honestly, it depends where they go. If either lands in San Fran, I'll take him. Otherwise I'll need to look at the coaching staff to see who I think can develop the guy they took better. I don't think either one has transcendent talent but either could be good. If everything is equal, I'll take Newton in FF but only because I don't mind risk. Gabbert would be my pick if I were an NFL coach.

This is exactly how I feel I think a lot of good college Qb's fail in the NFl more because of where they go and who the HC is then they do because of their skills. I think Carr would have been a stud if he went almost anywhere besides Houston so when I'm picking a Qb for dynasty unless there is a big seperation in skills I'm picking the guy who goes to the better coach and team.

I have to wait to see how the draft unfolds to pick between Gabbert and Newton.

Personally, I'm waiting to try to get Kaepernick later on in my drafts. I think I can get him in the late 2nd or 3rd, whereas Gabbert and Newton will probably go in the late 1st or early 2nd
