Gado, running backs to fill in for injured Henderson

McCarthy said that one of the Packers' most durable players, fullback William Henderson, could miss at least three weeks due to the knee injury he sustained in the Packers' preseason game against Atlanta, Saturday night.

"He had it scoped this morning, he just had it cleaned out," McCarthy said. "So we're expecting him back as soon as possible. If anybody can get back in a quick, timely fashion, it would be William. I'm hopeful for the opener."

In the meantime, the Packers will turn to some of their running backs for help.

"As far as our run schemes, the battering ram fullback is something that we don't do a lot of, so we can get that productivity from the halfback position," McCarthy said. "You'll see us training some of our halfbacks in that position and also some of our tight ends. We've always cross-trained those guys and we'll probably do a lot more of that the next couple of weeks getting ready for Chicago."

One player already preparing for an added role is Samkon Gado, who received reps at the fullback position, Monday.

"It was very different," said Gado, who last played fullback during his sophomore year in high school. "I'm not used to fullback, obviously, and I'm used to being in a two-point stance. But we're hurt right now at that position and we need to get ready for Chicago. If we're going to have any kind of season I think we need to have some depth there."

For Gado, the challenges lying in front of him may not sound difficult to those who haven't played the position.

"(The biggest challenge) is actually picking up the reads from a three-point stance," Gado said. "It's a little harder to see when you're in a three-point stance because your head is facing down and you need to be able to make the same cuts and the same reads that a running back does, but you have less time to do it."

But with a deep pool of talent at running back, Gado also sees this new position as an opportunity to add to his versatility.

"Coach (Edgar) Bennett told me that the more I could do, the better chance I have of being on the field," Gado said. "And obviously I would rather be on the field than on the bench with four running backs, so I think this is my best option.

"Football is football. So just being on the field is a lot better than being on the sideline, and with Ahman Green coming back, Coach told me he was going to be on the field a lot. It doesn't matter how good you are at running back, Ahman Green is going to play. So would you rather sit the bench at running back or play a little fullback? I think I would rather play fullback than sit the bench."

Samkon Gado-RB- Packers Aug. 24 - 8:56 am et

Samkon Gado won't be used at fullback again.

Green Bay experimented with the move after the injury to William Henderson, but Gado isn't a natural blocker. Staying at running back full-time, where Gado is currently behind Ahman Green, helps his fantasy value. The Packers will try some of their tight ends at fullback now.

hey cool thankswhat do you think of this then?Out of Green, Beach, and Gado, McCarthy felt comfy doing without Gado as a RB and using him at FB? OR He wanted to do anything to keep Gado on the field so he moved him to FB?Basically, this attempted switch do you see as a positive or negative? Also, how bad is Najeh's hip if he's not considerred since he's a former FB? Or are they set on him at RB?Any thoughts?

How about Green's value after this?I mean many have ranked the GB RBs like a three headed monster and not like one guy is the main back. How about now?

(Not the only article or comment but....)

1.Green

2.Gado

Davenport...cut

3.Arliss Beach

With Henderson undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery this past week, my dollar is on Vontae Leach taking over the FB position for now. We've had him for 2+ years now, and the GBP brass like him.

But what do I know...

Not real sure, I don't really follow Green Bay, I just remembered reading that Gado update earlier today.

Perhaps a GB fan knows who'll be playing FB. Sounds like it's up in the air.

doubt najeh gets cutI think they're rolling with what they've got 4 RBs 1 FBMaybe Beach can impress enough before preseason's done but if not, I doubt Najeh's gone
As a fan of the Dump Truck, I'd like to agree with you, however, local media states this is clearly his last chance to earn a paycheck with the Green and Gold. From what I've read in the local papers, and sports shows, he's done.If he signs, elsewhere, I would definitely keep tabs on the RB situation.I read the Milw. Journal-Sentinel everyday, and while it's not gospel, Davenport is as good as gone. Injuries are the main culprit.EDIT: To substantiate:From the 8/24 Training Camp Report...THUMBS DOWNThere comes a time when a team needs to weigh dependabilty much more so than talent. And that time may have arrived for the Packers as they evaluate Najeh Davenport, and pare their running backs. On the hoof, Davenport is bigger, more powerful, and just as fast, if not faster, than Arliss Beach and Noah Herron, the other two backs competing for what figures to be one spot behind Ahman Green and Samkon Gado. Also, Davenport has produced when he's played. He rushed for for 178 yds in his first pro start. His AVP over his 1st 4 years in Green Bay is 4.9. He has averaged 24.1 yds on kickoff returns. But, Davenport can't seem to stay healthy. He dropped out of Tuesday's practice with a hip injury and misssed again Wednesday. Earlier in camp, he missed 6 practices with a calf injury. Since joing the Packers in 2002, he also missed 25 games. What's the old saying? "You can't make the club in the tub." The Packers need to ponder that as they decide Davenport's future. This is not the 1st time I've seen this diatribe....

Davenport being gone is not that unlikely. I know the contract he signed was specifically set up in such a way, that if they did release / cut him, it would result in a minimal cap hit

I drafted him. He'll do well elsewhere then. :DSeriously, how many RBs that start a preseason game get cut?

I don't know. Today I saw a story with McCarthy telling him he needs to play to stay. Now he has a hip flexor injury. If some better players get cut he may too.Not much competition yet, but I think I would keep Beach over him if he doesn't step up soon.

Green Bay is one of the most frustrating teams to look at this year.

They have one of, if not they, easiest schedule for RBs with 8 of their games against bottom 10 run Ds (from last year's stats), and they can't decide on a clear workhorse type starter or replace the talent on the oline that they lost before last year. The passing game is fine, teams will not be able to stack the line, but GB probably won't be able to take advantage of it.

If they only had a line . . .

I think it's pretty clear Green is the man if fully recovered. If not, I figure Gado.

 Why do you think Thompson drafted Colledge, Spitz & Molls? Just for Chits & Grins?

Work in progress. Lots of new blood.

Exactly, IF, we don't know, and we need to draft.

It's good for the teams future, but odds are they aren't going to be up to NFL speed this year, and that's what concerns me.

Then we agree.

Are you agreeing, or disagreeing with me here cr8f? I can't tell because you quote my post and start off with "I don't know"...

Nothing at all unusual in drafting the primary RB's handcuff.Take Green in the 6th & Gado in the 10th - or something like that, you know the drill. As you pointed out, Green Bay has a nice rushing schedule. Their running game could well represent excellent value.

Seriously, how many RBs that start a preseason game get cut?
What a reach! Drop Davenport now. :lmao:
yeah yeah maybepretty sure he started yet another game
Green started against Cincy, not Davenport.
saw something at rotoworld via usatoday that he has two starts not sure which games. ETA,

here, g mornin'-

Najeh Davenport entered Monday's game second at running back, finishing with five carries for 21 yards.

It's surprising only because head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly has soured on Davenport recently. It appears he'll enter the season as Ahman Green's backup, although the Green Bay writers believe Davenport is on the roster bubble.

Based on last night, would you still say Davenport is still the primary backup with Gado running at FB?

I watched bits and pieces of the game, not the whole thing.

Thanks

Based on last night's game (RED FLAG) I'd say they need to issue Brett Favre a blindfold and cigarette and realize it doesn't matter who's starting or who's backing up who at running back.
