One first down doesn't end it, necessarily. One first down that puts them in FG range does.Announcers are wrong here. Bad decision to kick it deep. The field position means very little. If they pick up a 1st down the game is over anyway so it doesn't matter if that 1st down puts them in FG range or not, and if they force a 3 and out 20 yards of field position isn't going to matter to Brees w/ 2 mins left.
Not really, if they had stopped them there they might improve their field position by 20-30 yards. Plus one first down doesn't end the game in this situation.Announcers are wrong here. It essentially does. Saints aren't going to go 80 yards in 20 seconds. If the 1st down had been picked up on 3rd down, it literally would have run the clock to 0.One first down doesn't end it, necessarily. 20 yards of field position is not worth giving up a 13% chance of getting the ball. The only reason teams don't kick onside kicks on every kickoff is because it makes it too easy for the other team to score. They don't kick it deep because they're worried that an onside kick will give them worse field position the next time they get the ball back. In an end of game situation, you're removing the issue of the other team having an easier route to score because the other team isn't trying to score any more. Not really, if they had stopped them there they might improve their field position by 20-30 yards.
