Game Thread W1 - New Orleans v Cleveland (1 Viewer)

As a Reggie dynasty owner, I've seen all I need to see. I really don't care if he loses yardage on some plays, if he fumbles or drops a pass... what's important is that Sean Payton loves Reggie Bush. This is a head coach who has seen a guy in practice and determined 'this guy is getting the ball a lot.'

I agree. He is getting a lot of touches/looks. He got one look at the GL (from the 4). I think he's going to be a beast in PPR leagues.

' date='Sep 10 2006, 01:14 PM' post='5488509']To anyone who's got this game on... what's up with droughns?
Saints front line is completely dominating CLE right now. Droughns has had no room to run.

First Half targets

Player / # passes thrown to / # rec

Colston / 6 / 3 catches for 37. He looks like the go to guy on 3rd down for Brees so far.

Horn / 3 / 1 catch for 5 yards

Bush / 4 / 3 for 17

Henderson / 1 / 1 for 9

McAllister / 1 / 0 for 0

Rushes

Bush 10 for 51

Duece 9 for 36

Karney 1 for 1...out with injury

Defense looks good, but I think that is mostly because the Browns O looks bad, with bad playcalling.

9-0 at the half. Geaux Saints.

Kellen Winslow with 4-15. I thought he was supposed to be a downfield seam threat?

TD on cue

5 catches for Winslow and Frye has only thrown 12 passes. KW could be a huge pick for those that got him late. :raiseshand:

Deuce fumbled twice in a row.. recovered the first, lost the second.. we might be seeing even more RB soon.

So much for Drougns big season. Every short yardage situation he comes out and they give the ball to the backup fullback Lawrence Vickers.

Any Joe Jurevicius sightings?
JJ left with an injury of some sort.Winslow is getting all kinds of targets - he should have just got his second TD, but they didn't want to waste a review, due to a pass int call.

It was known (and reported by me in the Browns thread) that there was a good chance the Browns were going to try Vickers as the short-yardage back. I can't guarantee he will be that all year, but it that seems to be the approach today.

I still haven't seen any official updates on who the backup RB is with the Browns. I don't know myself right now. The Browns have never said it was Harrison, Wright is inactive, and it could be Vickers right now...

Charlie Frye looks pretty much like the QB he's been described as. I see some similarities between Frye and a young John Elway. Both were at their best improvising and throwing on the run. Both actually could make their biggest goof-ups when they stood in a cozy pocket and had all day to throw.

For the few suckas in my local league who scoffed when I took Reggie in a PPR league with my second round pick.... :bye:

I think Frye is the type of QB that should be very dangerous in a 2 minute drill, so I'm optimistic here because he's basically getting two chances to direct a game-winning TD drive late.

Or he could just throw a "growing pain" INT.

Either way, should be a fun end here for football fans.

Right now, the Saints have to defend the scramble. But thenthey got to watch for Winslow getting open and then simply refusing to be tackled until he's in the end zone.

Maybe its Edwards' time.

Wow. Huge break for the Brownies - dropped 3rd down pass but and illegal contact call WAY downfield away form the play - automatic first down.

And then the next play is an INT - Saints have the ball.

droughns needs to get more then 11 carries.. he's always been the type of back that gets better with the more carries he gets. I dont understand what the browns are trying to do at all this game. I know they have been behind the whole game, but its not like they have been far behind where passing was a necessity.

Obviously Frye is having a really bad time throwing the ball (just threw another INT which probably lost the game) so why did they continue to try and pass the ball.. Droughns was the only good thing they had on offense last year and they have gone away from that. I chalk this game up to bad coaching on the browns part.

Colston / 9 / 4 for 49 / 1td

Horn / 7 / 2 for 25

Bush / 9 / 8 for 58

Henderson / 3 / 3 for 44

McAllister / 1 / 0 for 0

Rushes

Bush 14 for 61

Duece 22 for 90

First thoughts: Defenses are going to have a hard time getting much pressure on Brees this year with the # of weapons we have. Picking up John Carney would be wise as we still have a hard time getting it in the endzone from the redzone area. Our defense played really well against the run, but I think Clevland had bad play calling in this area for most of the game. Bush lived up to the hype IMHO, and if you play in a league where total yards means something than he should be one of the top players. They will use him alot in the passing game, that much is obvious.

I don't think the Browns are a very good gauge of where we are at for this year, but I was very happy with the Saints playcalling & physical play today.

If Colston is available, he deserves to be picked up. And Henderson looked better than I thought he would. Joe Horn has slowed down, and was having trouble catching the ball today. Duece is much slimer, but his numbers will be affected by how much Bush is on the field. When it came time to run out the clock, Duece got the ball everytime, which I expect to be the case anytime we have a lead late or a large lead earlier. We need to get a fullback, or hope one of the 2 gets healthy soon.

Fujita looked great today, as did Bullox, Harper, & McKenzie. Penalties were not so bad for once. Both D & O line looked pretty good, but again this may have been some of the browns ineptness.

Win baby. :football:

For those who actually watched the game:

Was Reggie Bush making most/all of his receptions starting out in the backfield, or were they lining him up as a WR at all/a lot/etc.?

I was impressed by both Bush and Deuce. They both woulda had better numbers if they'd had a lead blocker. It may only be one game, but if the Saints can manage to get through the season with both Bush/Deuce being threats out of the backfield, they'll manage a decent season.

He caught a nice mix of both. They lined him up from several different spots as a reciever.

I would say most out the backfeild, but he made some catches spread out. He lined up at WR a lotand used the handoff(Duece)/fake end around(Bush), or fake handoff (Duece)/end around (Bush)

Calling BGP. Please stop saying the Brownies are in the running for the division this year. They are not good. They will never be good. Go back in the closet with PeytonMarino. TIA.

The Saints put 8 in the box most of the game and the Browns did little to keep them honest. The play calling looked pretty awful for the Browns and they looked like they threw out the Playbook from TC. Frye and Winslow looked great and Edwards showed some Flashes. The offensive line did poorly though and it was the outside of the line and not the inside that stunk. Browns Def looked great. Bush got about even carries with Deuce until the end of the game. Colston showed why Stallworth was expendable. Brees looked pretty confident. I was pretty impressed with the Saints front 7 on D. They were playing with an attitude.

was at the game

most confusing thing = the browns took Ted Washington out on EVERY 3rd down, whether it was 3 and 1 or 3 and 14, they took him out

 i dont get that

True enough. Good point.

Wonder if New Orleans is missing Donte' Stallworth right about now.
Nope. The LB we picked up in the trade has had a decent game and has helped with the run. Colston/Henderson have 93/1 and we still have the pick that could be up to a 3rd rounder. Donte always had good games, but then quickly fell asleep for weeks at a time. Considering he only had 1 year left on his contract, I'm quite happy with the trade.

:goodposting: It was nice to see a Saints defender actually wrap up a ball carrier and make a tackle. It had been so long since I saw something like that I had to ask a friend WTF that was..."It's called a 'Tackle'" It was also nice to see a huge reduction in the stupid pre-snap penalties. Like Tipsy said, it's hard to gauge how much of the Saints success was due to the Brown's ineptitude though. Payton called the best offensive game I'd seen from the Saints in a long time--which was a surprise given his history of having the play calling duties taken away from him. I had my expectations low for their use of Reggie Bush given the lack of creativity we've seen from the Saints in past years, but they used him very well. He ran inside, outside, was used as a receiver and caught the screen. He truly is the real deal. As in the preseason, the facet of his play that most surprised me was his inside running. Contrary to many assertions, he didn't lose yards on a lot of plays and typically made the extra yard or two in traffic after you thought that he'd been stopped. Deuce also looked great. The Haslett regime asked him to bulk up and he took some weight off this year and looked much quicker. Brees was a little rusty, but at least he didn't throw the ball backward. Horn looked like he had lost a step. Colston was very good...he got open and made some good catches. Don't expect too much because he seemed to share the spotlight with Henderson. All in all I was favorably impressed, but I went into the season with very low expectations.

I would have never thought the Browns controlled TOP from watching the game. It was a game of 2 halfs, but I didn't think the Browns did enough in the second to make up for the first. Thanks for the stat Sidewinder.

It was:32:46 New Orleans

27:14 Cleveland

Just trying to point out that it was not that lopsided.

I really can't wait for the 25th.
How many free dinners will it take to get that ticket from you? Brunch for a month? I'll do all your homework? My wife is going. I'm working. = Tipsy very sad.
You'd have to break my wife's kneecaps and steal her ticket. Death would be about the only thing keeping me from using mine.Season tickets = speed.

It was a good game against a bad team. The Saints did a lot of things right, and didn't do a lot of things that used to infuriate me in the Haslett/Brooks years.

There's only one game this season I want to see them win (besides the Superbowl), and that's this upcoming weekend vs the Pack. They humiliated the Saints last year by something like 50 points and kept Favre in the game deep into the 4th quarter. It was a complete rub your face in it game, and I hope the Saints can give them some of that back.

That is the game I've had circled on my calendar since the schedules were released. The Packer game, in my estimation, will show me if this is a new group of Saints, or the same old sad bunch.

I can't explain it, and I know I'm not saying this right, but I've been a Saints fan for 28 years and this is the first game I've wanted them to win "for me". It would totally boost my Saints enthusiasm through the roof if they beat the Packers this weekend.
