Game Thread W1 - NY Jets V Tennessee (1 Viewer)

Just got back from the game - couple of observations. Collins was better than his stats show. Several of his passes were dropped - or bobbled up for an INT. Both defenses looked horrible, but especially Ten - they simply were not defending the pass, just waiting for the catch and then tackle - horrible. Oline was horrible for both QBs - doesn't matter whos' back there, he won't have any time to set up. I haven't checked the stats but they seemed to go back and forth between RBs Brown and Henry (who looked tiny in the huddle). Titans fans suck - booing in the second quarter, leaving in droves in the third. LMAO @ the scoreboard during a commercial showing the "play of the game" last week: A Volek 50ish yard touchdown. :crickets:Sweet fly-over at the start of 4 F-22 Raptors :chub: after a nasty anthem by Aaron Neville (I didn't know he couldn't sing)Nice to see Fisher go for the 2 point conversion (and make it) twice (actually 3 times but one was called back).Still, Titans need an Oline and a defense.
I don't understand why people think the D played bad. They held the Titans to one offensive TD and forced a bunch of turnovers. Isn't that playing good D?Here's my analysis of the game. The Titans came in with the decision that they were going to make Pennington win the game with his arm. They jammed the running lanes, and then played off with the cover guys with the intention of sitting on Pennington's passes and jumping his routes. The first part worked - the Jets didn't have much of a running game the whole day. However, the second part failed, b/c Pennington was both accurate and strong-armed enough.Pennington's game has never been predicated on throwing the ball hard. Instead, he throws the ball right on time. CP threw quite a few medium and deep outs, and every time, the ball was thrown on the break, and ended up just out of reach of the defender. He also threw quite a few darts into tight spaces in the less-than-15-yards area, and kept the safeties back by throwing a couple of long streaks too. On defense, the lack of pass-rush for NYJ was a problem that will hurt them more against better teams. The secondary seems sharp, and between Dyson and Rhodes appears to have some playmakers to go with Vilma. The run defense was adequate, but jumping to a 16-0 lead does wonders for your defense.I don't think we've learned enough about the Jets offense yet. Pennington looks good, and he took hits and bounced back up. The line did a pretty decent job of pass-blocking, but was sub-par on run blocking. My guess is that the Jets are fundamentally sound enough to beat a bad team. It's not as clear whether they will be able to enforce their will on another fundamentally sound team. CP also has a tendency to break down over the course of a season, even if he remains healthy enough to play, so this situation still needs monitoring. Personally, I put the over-under on Jets wins at 6 1/2.

I think Jets fans couldn't reasonably have asked for more than they got yesterday. Coles looks healthy, Cotchery looked like a major upgrade over Justin "100-yard games are my enemy" McCareins, and most importantly Pennington appears healthy (for now?). The O-line held up despite being young, and their mishmash RB corps did just enough to be productive. On defense, the team made plays. Sure Collins and Young aren't Montana and Marino but the Jets made breaks on the ball when they were there; success is often about capitalizing on the opportunities in front of you.

As to the Titans? Jeff Fisher used to be considered one of the preeminent coaches in the league; how he's let the Titans become the rudderless ship they appear to be is beyond me.

Yes, what you're missing is the fact that you give this Jets team ZERO credit. Fact is, if they play the way they did today (should have won this game by a much larger margin for several reason) and work out some of the kinks that are bound to take place in the first few weeks of the season with a new coaching regime, they should be able to handle many of the teams you list as "possible win" or "debateable loss". There's no reason, to me, why they shouldn't be able to split with Buffalo and possibly Miami. Oakland, Houston AND Detroit at home, plus Green Bay and Cleveland on the road - those games look like good chances for a couple of wins. Please stick with your "Colts season ticket holder" posts, and stop pretending you know anything about the Jets because you saw them play one game, because anybody can just run down the schedule and write Loss next to each game, essentially predicting a 2-14 season, and question why it would be any other way, as if they are the foremost expert on the topic. The Jets had a miserable season last for many, many reasons, and with all the seeminly positive changes they've made, there's no reason to believe that there won't be a significant improvement from last year.

I'm not usually one to bump a post from months ago in a told ya so manner, but ol' pizzatyme never offered a rebuttal to this post which, 13 weeks into the season seems to be pretty accurate. I'm curious to see where all the "Jets will be lucky to get 4 wins this season" people are now that they are legitimate wild card contenders. Easy schedule or not, 7-5 with what was deemed questionable talent level and a very green coaching staff is rather impressive. :hophead:

sheerterror, don't hold your breath. Yes, the vast majority of people who weren't Jet fans on this board not only said they would be bad, most picked them to be the worst team in the NFL. It was stupid then, and I doubt any would show up raising thier hands now saying "yes, I am clueless!"

As a Jets fan, I'm used to it. I read a headline out of GB saying how "McCarty fumes over losing to mediocre Jets". The defense has seemed to gotten a firm grip on the system now, and have surrendered an average of 11.2 points per game for the last 4 weeks. Sounds mediocre to me. :football:

:hey: I'll raise my hand and admit readily that I was dead wrong on the Jets this year. As for being clueless, I'll let the rest of my teams and other topics speak for themselves. Congrats on a good year and a good call. Don't get cocky.

The defense has been great, the team is just above .500, most people consider that mediocre. That said, the Packers have no reason to be fuming over the loss, as they're just not good.

Sorry OZ, as is always the case, vast blanket statements are always wrong. I am guilty of that, my apology. Call it "Jets fan syndrome". But, even I admit, they have been better than I thought they would be, even with a very soft schedule. But.... the people calling them a 3 win team were indeed clueless, there really wasn't any solid reason to think they would be the dregs of the NFL this year. There is a silver lining tho.... I just won my third on-line bet regarding the Jets, this one for a 7 win season. At the risk of looking like an ####, I'll say it again. I'm no NFL expert, but when it comes to the Jets, I am rarely wrong. I attend TC often, I know some players and staff, I have my hand on the beat of my team of choice. I knew Rhodes would be a stud, I knew Houston would (eventually) beat out Barlow. I warned IDP people that Coleman and Vilma's values would go down significantly. I was wrong about Pennington going into 2005, so I admit when I miss, but that isn't very often. I knew that Curtis was done long, long before it became common knowledge. When the Jets renegotiated his contact last off season, it was a going away present. That wasn't opinion.... I knew it. Later it came out that Martin was lobbying the Jets FO to draft a running back. Curtis knew it was over. So did the Jets. So did I.Back on topic, yes, I agree the Jets "loosely" fit the mediocre team description, but for a GB newspaper to say it..... is like the doormat complaing about a shoe stepping on it. GB was as owned as a team can be. Look in the mirror before you say someone else is ugly.

Hey Nostradaumus, I reread the entire post. I don't see where you came out and made a call for the Jets final record. I made a call in the thread of 5-7 for the Jets. I was wrong. Does this make you feel better as a Jets fan?Does saying the Jets are a "legitimate" playoff contender make you feel better? I hope for you that the Jets make it. I do think they overachieved. Many on here think they overachieved.Hell, guys are saying they are winning bets from Vegas because the Jets won 7 games. I guess the books are idiots too?Not sure what you're wisecrack against me for saying I'm a Colts season ticket holder was all about, but whatever.I made a call, I was wrong. I can sleep tonight.
