Game Thread W8 - New England V Pittsburgh (1 Viewer)

HUH? He's not in bounds, so its a safety?

I think they messed this call up bad

I think the NFL will come out this week and confirm it should have been Patriots ball on a touchback.

Patriots need to work on their onside kicks, it seems. Not that it's ever likely you can win those, but they're not giving themselves any chance at all.

A fumble going out-of-bounds in the endzone being attacked results in the defending team assuming possession via touchback if the offensive team forced the ball into the endzone. If the defensive team forced the ball into the endzone it is a safety for the offense.

what a great play by polamalu
You can't do that.
he did it. and he's going to get away with it.it makes it a great play. legal or not.
Just because they missed a flag, doesn't make it a great play. If Pitt or NE land on that fumble with no punch, the clock runs out since no way NE gets set to snap another play. If they trhow the flag, NE gets yardage and another play. Troy had no idea he was going to get away with it so the act itself was stupid and basically the only way NE could get another play at that point. No NE lineman was picking it up for a TD and no way do they get another snap.Granted if it was called a penalty, NE almost never scores with the extra play but calling something great that could have the extended the game is wrong, Troy did the only thing that could hurt them.

What else would it be? If the ball goes out of the back of the endzone it's a safety.
Pittsburgh touched the ball last, it would be Patriots ball on the 20
They didn't have possession of the ball though. If they had possession before the endzone and then fumbled out of the back of the endzone it would be a touchback.

Steelers dominated the game. Would have been a shame to lose. Hopefully the injuries to Woodley and Ike aren't serious. If so, it's gonna be a long week against Baltimore.

Dare I say, AFC North best division in football?

I bet next year we will be able to review this illegal play. Weird that this hasn't happened in the past.
:shrug:can't review penalties called or not called
I think the difference is the scoring play. You can't fumble the ball forward. But, we will see later in the week.
They didnt have possession, they didn't fumble. The fumble went backwards (NE had possession and fumbled), which is legal.

Here's what I want to know: Troy Polamalu's swatting the ball back toward the endzone was illegal. But what is the proper result of the play?

Two things:

1. congrats steelers

2. troy illegally advanced the ball. no one possessed the ball before it went out of bounds. possession arrow new england.

notwithstanding item 2, the steelers won the game. good for them.

What an awesome game plan by the Steelers. I thought sure the Pats were going to smoke them.
:goodposting: Tomlin and LeBeau deserve great credit. Now if we can just beat the Ravens next week, we're in the drivers' seat for Home field.
After week 1, Im certainly not overly confident (plus Woodleys injury), but theyve looked like #### the last 2 weeks while we seem to be improving every week, so I like our chances

Wonder what this game would have been like if the Steelers got the ball back with 5 minutes on the clock after Gronkowski scored a TD.

It was New Englands ball and possesion, had it gone out of bounds on the sideline they would have kept the ball. The Steelers didnt advance... and its totally legal for a defending (i.e. team doesnt have possession) player to bat a ball, in any direction he wants.

Are you sure about this?

Some of you guys have no clue about the rules of American football. I am talking to you too Mr. Phil Simms.
