Song #16:  Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years
Shuke Ranking:  41

It is possible to have respect for a musician or a band and not really like them.  That's the case for me with Steely Dan.  I know they were one of the best studio bands in the history of rock n roll, but I just never liked them enough to buy any of their albums.  It's the kind of music that I'm either in the mood for or I'm not; generally I'm not, but I can still respect the quality and especially the guitar work.

Now, my ex-wife?  She LOVES Steely Dan.  @ms_flaghoople, if you're still out there, you know what song I'm about to offer up as an alternative here.  This one is for you.

I felt this way until one day I was good and fully baked, cranked em up and really found the groove.  If you can't get loaded and appreciate Aja as a piece, it's probably not gonna happen and that's OK. You have a good reason to be a little anti-

I saw the Dan last summer at Shoreline, with a bunch of people who were only really going for the opener (Doobies - a local fave).  All that's left is withering Donald Fagen and a bunch of hired help but I don't care, I freakin loved it

"Breakup Song" would crack my top 100 and I've listened to a lot of stuff.  I like that song so much I even read one of Greg Kihn's novels.

It is possible.   Concur 1000 percent.   Although I saw them live 3 or 4 years ago and it was great show.

Song #14:  Red House Painters - Golden
Shuke Ranking:  84

This sounds like some sort of ballad a cast member of the Bachelorette would conjure up with in desperation before being sent home.  It's not bad, but not compelling.  Reminds me a little of Pete Yorn, who I'd much rather listen to if I'm in the mood indie folk with feelings.
Figured you'd like this one.

Figured you'd like this one.
It's getting pretty good soon...more Green Hearts, no skips and lot of thought being given.

This is also making me reach out to friends who are more well equipped to speak about your artists mentioned and that makes me so happy.  I'll screen shot their texts back to me ....

There is some on the list that is there more for nostalgia's sake.  While I've been listening to my playlist, I'll probably use 800 of the songs on it to make a new one of stuff I really want to listen to.
I feel better now that I know that even shuke can't stomach the full shuke code ...

Exactly.  I'm going to prune/adjust/add some other bands/songs for a 500 or so list for a 20-24 hour mix.
I'm shooting for 10 - that are REALLY the shukiest!

Oh - I do like more than just 10. I think my work in the thread shows that.

Its just like a fine bourbon. Get the essence via distillation.

Then, next week - I can make a new batch with 10 others.

Song #13:  Thee Headcotees - Davey Crockett
Shuke Ranking:  212

Christ on a pogo stick, what is this crap?  Why would you voluntarily listen to this?  Here's a sample of the lyrics from this......this.....song.

Davy Crockett,
who's that girl in your locket
you got a big boy knife
to take her life
yeah
gabba gabba hey
gabba gabba hey
gabba gabba hey
gabba gabba hey
uooooh yell them all

Man, I love you but if I have to endure something like this every 10 songs or so, I might have to end our friendship.  I don't have an alternative.  I know who Holly Golightly is only because she makes an appearance with Jack White on a throwaway song that I kind of like off Elephant but this doesn't make me want to investigate any further.  Surely there is better from this band?
Reminds me a lot of Neil Young's "Farmer John" - not sure who's ripping off paying tribute to whom

Song #18:  Three Dog Night - Mamma Told Me (not to come)
Shuke Ranking:  61

This gong will always and forever remind me of the movie Boogie Nights, which is good because I love this movie and I also love this song.  Roller Girl.

I had a religion professor in college who felt this was the greatest song ever written.  Can't remember why, but I do think it's Three Dog Night's best one.

Song #19:  Metallica - Fade to Black
Shuke Ranking:  761

Good choice from a band I admire but never fell in love with the way passionate Metallica fans have.  I have two alternative choices that I would go with over Fade to Black.

Early in their career - Creeping Death, which I've heard is great live for fans - "DIE. DIE. DIE"....

And, this power ballad that came out in '96, which is probably my favorite Metallica song overall.

Song #20:  Death Cab for Cutie - Summer Skin
Shuke Ranking:  343

The older I get, the more Death Cab for Cutie grows on me.  Very solid songwriting and I think as I mellow in life, their songs just sound better.  Summer Skin is a good choice but for me, I'll take Soul Meets Body.  I think this is a great stanza (is that the right word?):

'Cause in my head there's a Greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place where they're
Far more suited than here

Song #21:  Elvis Presley - A Little Less Satisfaction
Shuke Ranking:  743

Excellent choice, buddy.  I wouldn't have thought to turn to The King, so it was a nice surprise to hear him yesterday.

One of my best friends growing up in Dallas is a much bigger fan, so I reached out to him for his selection.  My buddy Andrew has it made, man.  Comes from old Dallas money, was very popular with the ladies, married a hot chick who runs the fixed income department for a giant airline, so he's been a stay-at-home-dad the last 12 years or so.  Oh, and he does an incredible Elvis impersonation when he does Karoke.

His choices, in no particular order - "Lonesome Tonight", "Until it's Time for You to Go",  "Burning Love", "Heartbreak Hotel" and the one I would have thought a David Lynch fan such as yourself would have chosen, Shuke - "Love Me".  Great song, great book, better movie.

Song #22:  Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Blue on Black
Shuke Ranking:  916 (too low!)

Oh yeah, I needed this one, GB!  Long day at work, the train is just starting to roll and this has hit my ear drums at the perfect time.  This guy can #######g shred a guitar.  He idolized one of my favorite musicians - Stevie Ray Vaughan and it comes though in his music.  He basically self taught himself how to play and was only 19 when this song hit the airwaves.  Great selection....GREEN HEARTED!

"Burning Love" ####### rocks. It's probably Elvis' last great record, but that damned piano is what makes it.

Song #23:  Son Volt - Chaos Streams
Shuke Ranking:  53

Now we're rolling, GB!  Love this band and this genre but guess what?  I have never heard this song before!  This is fabulous.  GREEN HEARTED!!!!  Son Volt is criminally underrated.

And Bentley doesn't know what he's talking about - Windfall is the best Son Volt song, not Tear Stained Eye (also good).

Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down

Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven

Song #24:  Henry the Archers - Means Nothing
Shuke Ranking: 578

You're a weird guy, Jason.

Oh, neat, now the guy is yelling in this song - he should quit music and go work at 5 Guys where he can scream all day long at people.  "ONE IN THE DOOR!!!!!"

Song #25:  Sweet Spirit - Let Me Be On Top
Shuke Ranking:  898

Funky, groovy.  I'll say this much - you've got diverse taste in music!

Song #26:  Barenaked Ladies - It's All Been Done
Shuke Ranking:  883

I used to lifeguard and teach swim lessons during summers at the Dallas Country Club.  Great job, great pay and a lot of fun hanging out with the other guards/teachers at night.  One summer in college, a new girl was hired who was staying with her dad on summer break from Northwestern.  Unlike most of us, she wasn't from Dallas so she didn't know many people or the city very well.

Her name was Katy and she was drop dead gorgeous - blonde hair, natural beauty, no makeup required, sensational body and unlike most hot chicks I knew, she was really cool and down to earth.  We became fast friends after it was apparent she was WAY out of my league (and we both knew it) and we were tight friends for a few summers and have remained in touch to this day (she is still breathtaking, btw).  We used to smoke, drink, play pool, get late night food and listen to music.  I'd introduce her to things I was into and she'd do the same.  Her favorite band?  Barenaked Ladies.  Not my style, usually, but this gal could have gotten me to to listen to a recording of cats making love in a back alley and I would have nodded along with happy glee.

A tune I recall her playing quite a bit was this one - not a great song, but she loved it and this makes me think of her and that makes me smile.  Katy

Song #27:  Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town
Shuke Ranking:  60

Like most males born in Dallas, I bled Cowboys blue from an early age.  By 5 or 6, I knew the entire roster by heart, was glued to the set and was collecting football cards soon after.  And as much as I loved my Cowboys, they provided nothing but heartache for years (I was only 4 when they won in 1977 so don't really remember that).  Three straight years losing in the NFC championship were devastating in the early 80s and then they just sucked, which is what the Rangers and Mavericks did annually.

So there weren't many championship moments for me.  Not until my sophomore year of college when the Dallas Dynasty began.  After they beat the Bills in 93', the marketing arm of the Cowboys released a VHS tape that you could buy celebrating the season.  The commercials for it ran constantly and the tune that was used to promote it was Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" and I'll NEVER be able to listen to this song and not think about the Cowboys winning that Super Bowl.  I can still hear that song with the voice of play-by-play man Brad Sham saying "Emmitt Smith....coming left!" dubbed over the music.

As for Thin Lizzy, I think they don't get enough love for being a great rock band.  Jailbreak is a great song.  Phil Lynott was a very talented musician.  I know because I watched a VH1 show about him years ago. :nerd:

Song #28:  MC5 - Sister Anne

Yeah, boy!  This is the dope right here.  Absolute no-brainer, this got a green heart fast.  And that was before the jamming harmonicas at the end.  Will be investigating this artist more very soon.  This song is totally why we here!

this is such a cool tune.  he played a live show outdoors in downtown Detroit when the Super Bowl was here.  got to see him from 10 yards away.  what a great show on a perfect night with a light snow fall at times.  dude tore it up.

My write up for this song:

Another band I actually dislike, but I really like this song.

A long weekend that involved heavy drinking but not much Shuke 1000 listening.  Monday morning, 7:30am, walked out of my house and hit 'play'.

Song #29:  The Werks - Heading South
Shuke Ranking:  #628

This sounds like a band that is trying really hard to sound like Phish.  I'd rather listen to Phish.

Song #30:  Billy Preston - The Way God Planned It
Shuke Ranking:  359

Dude, what is this?  I think we're done here.  I might need to take a break from you for a while.
Dude, Billy Preston is awesome.

I quit after the God song.
I googled it and the song has it's own Wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That's_the_Way_God_Planned_It_(song)

The lyrics to "That's the Way God Planned It" partly reflect the long musical apprenticeship Preston had served since childhood, mentored by artists such as Sam Cooke and Ray Charles,[1] while musically the track combines the gospel tradition with rock. Produced by George Harrison in London, the recording also features contributions from Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Ginger Baker and Doris Troy. Having been edited down to three minutes for its single release, the full version appeared on the album, as "That's the Way God Planned It (Parts 1 & 2)".

"That's the Way God Planned It" became an international hit, peaking at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, and is one of Preston's best-known songs. Backed again by Harrison and Clapton, Preston sung it at the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971 – a high-spirited performance that several commentators regard as a highlight of that historic show, after its inclusion in the 1972 concert film. The single then charted for a second time on the Billboard Hot 100 when reissued by Apple in the United States.
