Came across a few good ones recently.

This one is my favorite https://timeguessr.com/
Gives you a picture you gotta figure out the where and when

Another good one is https://travle.earth/
You gotta come up with the shortest route between two states/countries

And another I like https://globle-game.com/
Try to guess a country by choosing randomly then go on clues of hotter colder to get to the correct one

geoguessr.com for the win. I have not played in forever, and it's $3/mo subscription, but basically drops you off somewhere in Google street view maps and you have to "drive around" and try to figure out where in the world you are. Edit: You score between 0-5000 points depending on how close you guess. I think it allows for competing against other users too ...It's been a while.

I used to play Globle and Globle Capitals every day and I've gotten out of the habit. Good stuff.

and just remembering my son used to get an annual almanac/atlas that had a lot of geography info in it.

on an every weekend subway commute years ago to... crap- I can't remember!- we'd play the "country game" where one of us would say the starting letter, and then we'd take turns saying countries that started with it until we were stumped (and then look at the book).

Took me 4 guesses before I figured out how to change the year on the first one. Result: I am stupid.

There are some YouTubers and other online folks that play geoguessr and post "challenge" games where you can play the same map they're playing. IIRC, those are free to play along.

I used to play this at work for hours back when I had a job with nothing to do, just on overhead all day. Shame its gone subscription.

My strategy used to be to look at other license plates for at least a sense of the continent, then street signs and flags. If the map images were blurry, you were most likely in Australia or Brazil. If the street signs were in Russian or some other Cyrillic alphabet, I'd just reload.

Driving on left or right side of road was usually my first observation; and then the highway signage; and if the images were filled with poverty, dreariness, and cyrillics - that would be Russia.

Yeah, I had a pretty good run of killing the last two hours of my Fridays on geoguessr. I used three tabs: one for the game; one for Google maps to hunt highway numbers (Hello Scandanavia!); and a cyrillic translate table.

I like this game, but somebody needs to send them a memo that Andorra is still a country. I got X's for answering Spain where "Borders 3-4 countries" intersected with "population over 20 million" and "Name is 5 letters long."

Hmm. I was rolling with just France, Portugal, and Andorra. I'll take the hit on Gibraltar (with a frowny face), but Morcco? All that time wasted on bird law when I should have focused on maritime law.

It’s a land border. There are couple of Spanish exclaves, Ceuta and Melila, and smaller areas called Plazas de Soberania.

It gives you a rank, so you can figure out percentile. It varies from board to board, but the top decile is usually between 70 and 100; lower is better.

Completing the entire board first go is tough regardless.

4339/18663 = 23%, subtract from 100 to get 77th percentile. Like I said, it varies.

You get rewarded for more obscure answers, those guessed the least by other Geogridders.

Start with 900, subtract 100 for each correct guess, then add the percentage of people who guessed the same country in a given square. Your total is the sum after 10 guesses have been depleted, or the board is full.

So it is a bit like golf: lower score is better, and you get one mulligan. Rank lets you calculate percentile.

Can someone explain why Bhutan didn't qualify for this combo:
"Is a monarchy" & "Flag only has 3 colors"?

Where "Top 20 in annual tourist arrivals" intersects with "Capital city population over 1 million"... surprised Greece did not make the cut.

Athens isn't that populated.

ETA: another one that is screwy is New Delhi which technically has less than 100k people.

The answer section includes an explanation of your wrong answers. I’m guessing they are counting 4 colors on the flag - Orange, yellow, white and black.

ETA yeah, that’s almost certainly why. Outlines don't count for colors, but the dragon’s eyes are clearly black.

There’s a whole category “capital isn’t most populated city.” As it turns out, this is true for most bigger (population) countries. Palau also qualifies.
