Georgia Frontiere dies (1 Viewer)

Sad, sad news. She was the only female owner in the NFL. By all accounts a wonderful woman loved by the players that had the time to know her. This football fan will remember her respectfully.

Edit to add, I dont know exactly what impact this will have on the ownership, but Id imagine it may lead to a shakeup at some point down the road. She was an LA woman, so Id venture a guess that a team sale will soon follow.

I know two ex Rams who were on the team when they moved to StL. They said they will dance on her grave when she dies. She was well disliked by many players. Don't know how they feel now that it's happened, but there was definite hatred in those two players' hearts.

Virginia McCaskey (daughter of George Halas) is the principal owner of the Chicago Bears.

My bad, stand corrected. And about those 2 fools dancing on someone's grave, that's their right, but I'll not believe for a second they represent anything less than 2 knuckleheads that are willing to announce they'll dance on an old lady's grave when she dies. Dont know about you, but I dont pay much attention to people with such views. Im sure they'll be fondly remembered by someone for something when they kick it.

They were ex players with lots of contact with her and both were screwed by her and had their careers basically ended by lies, backstabbing and legalized theft and such. And they were drunk. They may not represent all of the players from that era, but they represent a decent amount of guys, not just 2 knuckleheads.

I hear ya, Mad. The bitterness of a few guys is something Im just not going to spend much time with. But just those remarks alone are all I really need to hear to know which side of the fence Id stand on. We all know, football is a brutally cold business at times. She made some tough choices moving that team from LA to St Louis, and the simple fact that the NFL has refused to work with the city to bring back a team in the 2nd biggest market in the country pretty much tells the tale. There were problems there that were out of hers and the league's control. So, with whatever problems these 2 men had with an owner, I would tend to sympathize and understand. But to dance on someone's grave. That's just not someone Im likely to have a beer with. In remembering this woman, Id prefer to think about all the happiness she's brought millions of fans of St Louis by bringing them a World Champion. Hope that wasnt too deep.

Frontiere was born Georgia Irwin on Nov. 21, 1927, and attended Soldan High School before moving to California at age 15. She wed that year, though the marriage was eventually annulled, according to published reports.

Her second husband was killed when hit by a bus. She left her third husband to try to make it as a showgirl in Las Vegas. Her fourth marriage -- to a stage manager of the Sacramento Music Circus -- ended in divorce after three years. Husband No. 5 was a Miami television producer.

She married Rosenbloom in 1966, shortly after he took over the Baltimore Colts. He eventually swapped that franchise for the Rams, which his wife took control of after he drowned.

Frontiere remarried again after Rosenbloom's death. Her seventh husband, Dominic Frontiere, was an award-winning composer. They divorced in 1988 upon his release from prison after serving time on tax charges related to the scalping of more than 2,500 tickets to the 1980 Super Bowl in Pasadena.

She lived large, that's for sure.

Glad to see this getting a little play in the Pool rather than the trashing her thread in the FFA. I have no love for her, but a period of respect for the dead is warranted.

Condolences to the Frontieres and for Rams fans. Maybe a little internal upheaval is what the team needs to flourish, and let's hope the team stays in St Lou.

In the 12+ years since the Rams moved here, I have never heard a nice word about her.

I just hope this signals a turn around for the Rams.

As far as the Rams staying or moving, they signed a 30 year deal in 95. Of course I didn't read the contract so there may be some sort of clause to get out of it but I doubt the city lets that happen.

Georgia Frontiere was for the most part well liked in St. Louis. She helped many (including ex-players) with money that never made the headlines - as she wanted. RIP Georgia; What will happen with ownership of the team will prove interesting. She owned 60% which will go to her family a daughter and son when married to Rosenbloom. But only one person can own the 50% or more; per NFL - Now the interesting part; Stan Kroenke (st. louis/columbia, Missouri & married into Walmart but also is listed as having 3B in his own businesses ) owns 40% but he also owns the pro teams in Denver (basketball & hockey) and the NFL says you can not own other pro teams and have marjority interest in a NFL team. At one time Stan would have loved to own the Rams and he first right to buy. According to the papers here the son does not have an interest in the team since he is in the film making. Be interesting.

One image of her that I remember is her on the cover of Sports Illustrated with Bert Jones after he was traded from Baltimore to Los Angeles. That trade didn't work out for her because Jones retired after receiving advice from his doctor that he shouldn't play anymore.

My dad. a lifelong Rams fan and I will be rejoicing.

My how quickly people forget things.

Carroll Rosenbloom, her husband and owner of the Rams, mysteriously died while swimming in a hurricane, leaving the team to her.

She immediately fired his son from the organization and brought in incompetent management to run the team. The result was that a consistently good-great team was turned into a pathetic laughing stock team in just a few years. Then she moved them to St. Louis.

Almost no California Ram fans will feel bad for this discredit to the team and the NFL. Many of us still feel that she had Rosenbloom (who was a great owner) offed.

History recap:1966 -- Georgia marries Carroll Rosenbloom, principal owner of the Baltimore Colts

1971 -- Rosenbloom swaps franchises with the new Los Angeles Rams owner, one Bob Irsay

1979 -- Rosenbloom dies in mysterious drowning accident, PBS Frontline report airs interviews with reputed mobsters who allege that he was killed

1995 -- Georgia moves the franchise to St. Louis, leaving Los Angeles without an NFL team

Seems that she was, at the very least, in the middle of not one, but two teams' turmoils.
