Getting the tonsils out in your 30s (1 Viewer)

Has anyone had this experience? Mine are the size of cabbage balls. Really looking to see what kind of recovery time I am looking back till I can work again. Doc told me 10 days.

I had them out when I was 32 or 33. It sucked, but 10 days seems a little long to me - maybe if you have it done on a Friday, and take the whole next week off before going back the following Monday, that would be 9 days. I did have mine out on a Friday, felt ok Saturday, then really started to hurt from Sunday until Tuesday, was feeling better (though still sore) Wednesday, and went back on Thursday.

However, I'm not going to lie - it was very painful. But well worth it. I went from getting strep throat 3 or 4 times a year, to not getting it all for 10 years.

Had them out when I was 25 and 10 days was short for me. Mine were pretty bad though, according to what the ENT told my mother when I was in recovery - a lot of scar tissue type stuff, etc. The pain pills they gave me were basically horse pills, and I'm not sure how you're supposed to swallow those when in the worst pain ever. I ended up getting into a pretty bad cycle of not healing because I wasn't eating and my body wasn't getting nutrients but also not eating because I was in so much pain. Finally, I started drinking Ensures, and the healing started.

10 days is probably a safe bet for most people, though. Just know that you'll be in a lot of pain during days 3-~9. A tip that worked for me: drink room temperature water. Cold water actually hurt more. Not sure where the whole ice cream for tonsil pain thing came to pass - I couldn't have anything cold at all.

All told, some of the worst pain I've been in, but so, so worth it. I haven't been sick in 11 years.

Good luck!
