Told my wife about this thread. She said most women don't care if a guy is bald. She also said the guy could fly to Turkey and get hairplugs for about 10 grand.

You fly to Turkey to save money. It's about $2k there. $5k stateside. A friend just had the procedure done last year and it honestly looks awesome. It used to be you could tell someone got plugs but it seems surgeons have really stepped up their game (see Tom Brady, etc)
Tom Brady is all natural!!!

This is false info. Turkey is $3K + flight costs. To get it done in the U.S. it can be upwards of $25K. U.S usually charges $5 per graft, and normal procedures are around 4,000+ grafts…do the math.

My friend just had it done for around $5k IIRC. I was surprised as I also thought it would be much more expensive. I don't know the specifics of his procedure but a good doctor here in Houston. Think it was just the front of his head. Didn't have any scarring on the back either. Said that was the old process or something along those lines. I'll get more specifics for you next time I see him.

If it was only $5K then it must’ve been a very small section on the corners or something. It’s called FUE where they don’t do the big scar anymore…they take out individual follicles in the back where guys don’t lose hair (the horseshoe area)

That must have been the case. Here's the Dr's webpage ($4-15k): https://www.hairphysician.com/hair-transplant-cost/

So yeah, the $5k I quoted is definitely on the low end. Guess it depends how much transplanting is needed which makes sense.

The beauty of Turkey is they do as much as you need for the best result at a straight price. 500 grafts is the same price as 4,000 grafts. And ironically, Turkey is actually better at the procedure cuz they focus only on it. US doctors usually do 20 other plastic surgery type of procedures so not usually experts at it

But I really prefer being bald.
Prefer it? Cause the cost saving on hair products or times saved having to manage it? Just curious because ive never heard anyone say this. Im not bald. Don't think id have a problem if I was, but I wouldn't prefer it.

It's an interesting question.

I think I'd lean toward no toupee.

Another good poll might be men who color thier hair to hide the gray.

I don't do that but I've wondered about it.

Also, men have it easy on the aging stuff. It's unfaif of course, but many see aging for men differently than aging is for women.
As I round 50 and get more gray/white, I have been more and more tempted. The only reason is that it doesn't come in even and the beard is mostly white, but my moustache is all dark still. It looks suuuuper creepy when I see pics and it looks like I just have a moustache.

there's a guy that is a regular at a couple local bars that rocks a hideous toupee. But he dates a lot of women who enjoy his particular type of creepiness. If baldy wasn't doing well before, let him do what he wants. Bald married guys shouldn't really have an opinion about dating anyway.

My buddy is bald and he says he prefers it cuz he wouldn’t have the patience to do his hair everyday and get haircuts regularly.

Easy to say that when you’re used to bald life though. I don’t think many guys would choose to be bald over having hair if they could.

vibe I get is he's almost 40 and still single,
How much do think this is due to hair?
Confidence matters though, so maybe there’s that.
He's an alright guy. Nice, but awkward at times. I've seen stranger individuals fall in love with someone on their wavelength, so he has potential. Part of the problem is the male/female ratio around military installations make it tougher on the guys.

Bald dude here, just own it.
It helps if you’re not a complete slob, helps even more if you’re in shape. But I really prefer being bald.
One day I'll be there. I've got the Manu Ginobli circa 2015 bald spot going.
I get that. I started balding at 22, after I got engaged 🤔 and I was in ROTC, so shaving was a good option. Plus I didn’t want to look like my dad (RIP)

We’ll need Offdee before and after pictures to judge effectiveness

Easier, and I swim a fair bit, which could wreck havoc on hair. And honestly, I think I look better bald. My wife and daughter insist I keep my beard, which I just keep trimmed.

Meh. He should do whatever makes him feel comfortable.
This. Really is the best answer.

Part of the problem is the male/female ratio around military installations make it tougher on the guys.

True. But even then, confidence is far more important than hair.

Not to get off on a tangent but when I was swimming a bunch and would have stubble or some level of facial hair it would cause a skin rash on my shoulder where my chin would rub. Annoying.

I'm clearly living in a bubble. I had no idea toupee's were still a thing in 2025. They seem like such a skeevy 70's-80's thing. I don't think I know a single person that wears one. The guy with painted hair is bad enough.
They are called "hair systems" these days. It's not the old school toupees you're thinking about. they literally shave the scalp and glue it on and lasts about 2 weeks before needing to replace the glue.
For some reason the glue on option seems almost worse to me. Just the thought of having hairs glued to my scalp makes me *shudder*.

For me, I prefer it. I’m bald because I shave but could grow hair. I’m fortunate to 1. Be married already so not looking for a date and 2. have a nicely shaped head. I like how it looks and it’s much more acceptable nowadays and it’s so much easier and cheaper than having hair. Even if you guaranteed me Fabio hair I’d stick with what I have - I’m happy with it and my wife seems ok with it.

ETA: I should have said that while I can grow hair - it’s not good hair by any stretch.

As someone who has been on and off the dating apps, he is going to have to wear it to the date. If he doesn't, she is going to be upset right away that he doesn't look like his pictures. Maybe it accidently falls off and they have a good laugh....

Otherwise I think his only play is to wear it for a few dates, then show up on one where he can explain he "shaved" everything. Then own it from there....

My beard isn’t that long. I keep it to 8mm or shorter. Think a less good looking John travolta when he had a shaved head.

Wait, it's not like Top Gun where every bar has dozens of women hanging around to be picked up by the GIs?

I have a super dark brown goatee area in my beard but the rest of it is mostly gray - I wouldn't dye it, but have had people ask me if I dye to goatee area. Not sure why someone would only dye some of their beard and not all of it

More like divorcees prowling for benefits.

This could be a good story.

And being shocked when his hair doesn't grow back after "shaving".

I pluck some of my gray hairs (don't have too many yet), but it's not because they're gray, but because they turn into wild-*** hairs that stick out and look bad.

Every once in a blue moon my wife picks a white hair out of my beard. I think when I get older, if my hair turns white or grey then I'll just own it.

Reminds me of George Costanza and the Timberlands :lmao:

As for the upcoming online date, I say wear it. Online dating is normally just a smash and grab so best to fake it. Chances are it wont amount to anything meaningful. Also a good chance she cancels last minute.
Not everyone's looking for the smash and grab though, especially as you get older.

If OP really wants to get the answer to this question he should ask some females which would shed a lot more light on this then a bunch of middle aged men

I agree but the majority of people on dating apps are (women for sugar daddies, men for sex). This isn't the same idating game it was back in 2002. I think it's better he plays the field for a bit, takes on some ground balls and a little batting practice before heading to the majors. A good toupee will help his confidence and game. It could also lead to some hilarious stories.

And more importantly, it's generally a bad idea to ask women their advice on dating. They'll tell you to be a nice guy who leads with honesty and other nonsense. As they say, you want to ask a fisherman how to fish. Don't ask a fish.

Bald dude deciding to show up to work one day suddenly with a full head of “hair” had to be an interesting decision. I would think all the way till he walked in, he had to be questioning himself. I would be.

My dad is and was bald all of the life I can remember accept for the sides and back and a few straggler long hairs on top. He maintained the remaining hair fanatically.

I always said if I start to go bald, I would be shaving it all off. Never went bald at all but my older brother went bald but not as bad as my dad. Left him in the awkward position of fighting to keep what he had but not enough to really make it look like a full head of hair. It really bothered my brother but it’s been 30 years of it by now.

I always had a mustache when I was younger. When the gray started to show up, my mustache was very salty and pepper, and looked awful. I had to cut it off and my wife loved it. She loves the salt and pepper look in my full head of hair. Must be the "George Clooney" look.
Many men look great bald. I say he should embrace the look, not conceal it .

There's no correlation there little buddy. Most are just terrible at giving dating advice.

I ran it past my wife last night. She said the whole night would be soured if she thought he had hair and didn't. She'd recommend waiting a date or two before telling the girl.

She then followed up that she'd also be disappointed whenever he finally disclosed it, but if she liked him enough it wouldn't be a huge deal.

So of course I followed it up asking if a guy should be disappointed if a girl used filters, makeup, wears a wig or extensions and she said no, because that's how girls feel better about themselves and men shouldn't judge them for that.

After several back and forths on hypocrisy, she finally admitted that it's a hypocritical take and there is a double standard, but thats the way it is...
