There was a movie called The Girlfriend Experience that starred Sasha Grey.  It was directed by Steven Sodderbergh, who's EP on this new series.  He says that the series was "suggested by" the movie.  The lead character seems to have the same name - Christine (real name)/Chelsea (alias).  I haven't watched the series, but the idea was that the clients were a good "in" for a TV series.  Each could be their own episode.
