Kevin Jones adjusts to Chicago Bears' special teams

Bears RB Jones tackling a new task on the fly

The competitive side of Kevin Jones refused to accept the role of sideline spectator.

Jones knew his chances of becoming the Bears' go-to back dwindled with every Matt Forte touch. Then when Adrian Peterson suddenly became the backup, Jones was left with no other choice but to swallow his pride.

So he stepped into coach Lovie Smith's office two weeks ago to ask why he was no longer in the plans at running back and to say he was willing to play special teams if it meant a chance to see the field. Smith assured him the lack of playing time was nothing personal, and the Bears coach welcomed another body on special teams.

"A lot of people still have jobs in the NFL because they play special teams," Jones said. "But I just wanted to send a message that I'm not here for a free ride. I wanted to send a message to the Bears and to every other team that's looking that I can be valuable."

Jones, inactive for four games before Thursday night's victory over New Orleans, made an immediate impact in his new role. He led the Bears with three special-teams tackles against the Saints, seeing action on the kickoff and punt teams.

I think he's got New England Patriots written all over him for 2009. Or maybe the Bucs. He's still young, he's a full year removed from the knee surgery, both teams were poking around about him last year (if press reports were accurate), he's appears to be a team player and they can find out if he's got something left pretty cheap.

:thanks: I don't want to play the part of Kevin Jones' apologist here, but I find it hard to believe that (the other) Adrian Peterson is a better option for the Bears as Forte's backup. I had just assumed that KJ's return from major injury had been the reason we hadn't seen much of him lately, but if Jones is well enough to play and standout on special teams, then I don't understand what's going on here or why the Bears aren't taking advantage of his experience and abilities (particularly as a receiver out of the backfield).

He has never been a great/fluid receiver, Martz just uses his RB's a ton in the receiving game and dumped off a lot to him.

Instead of pouting about his bad injury luck, he's making the best of the situation and making a name for himself as a team player. I think he finds work in 2009.

Yeah, but Cedric Benson would have had 1800 tackles had he been tried on special teams.

It's easy to suddenly become a team-guy when you're an inch away from being a grocery-bagger.

Ok, maybe I'm still bitter about whay Jones did to Penn State and Joe Pa. That was truly classless.
