Gladiator 2 Official Thread - For those who are about to die, we salute you. (2 Viewers)

Finally watched this. It's now on Paramount plus.

I think the big negative to this movie is that it follows a really really good first one. Hard for a sequel to follow Mr. Crow and Mr Phoenix in those epic roles.

Overall it wasnt great. It wasn't horrible. It was meh. Had it's moments. Loved the guy on a rhino entrance. Denzel was decent.
Was entertaining but too close to the plot of the first, the twin emperors were not good and I didn’t like the seemingly forced connections to part 1. I was disappointed overall.
It was way too close but unfortunately it seemed like every change they made was worse. The main character was not likable and had a **** backstory. I knew who he was going to be but why would those gladiators give a rats *** about him. We saw nothing that put him remotely into the leader Maximus was. Overall, very disappointed and I didn’t even like Denzel.

So glad I waited until it was free.

Yeah. agreed with the consensus. Watched it for free On Demand and I'm glad that was the extent of my commitment.

Re-hashed story, both villains and heroes were just MUCH worse versions of the characters from the first movie. That little dweeby kid from the first movie becoming some bad *** warrior after being sent away made very little sense and them deciding to make him Maximus' kid added nothing to the story and diminished the Maximum character (since it makes him a cheater instead of the heartbroken husband/father he was in the fist movie)

Sharks in the Colosseum? Come on. Just dumb. The Rhino was absurd as well but at least that looked cool. The baboons from the first fight looked ridiculous.

And the ending made no sense and was dumb.

Visually looked good (other than the bad CGI on the baboons) and some of the fight scenes were ok. Didn't drag on TOO long. I was mildly entertained. Guess I'd give like a 6/10. I'll certainly be ok if I never see it again.

Final speech scene was ummm, completely dumb.
Nearest person is 50ish feet away and wouldn't be able to hear him.
10,000+ soldiers all clamoring for war just stopped in unison to ask 'who the {expletive} is this guy?' 'Not one of us.' 'Dunno.'
'What's he going on about?' 'Can't hear him.'

The only person of authority that can validate he is who he says he is just died on a float.

Ok, break up the battle and follow meeeeeeee!

I watched it and thought it was alright but something was missing. Re-watched the first one and it just feels so much better. There was just something missing in the battles scenes in the second one. The action just flashes by and think the action in the battle scenes of the first one is way better.

The missing part is the main characters. In the first one you got his history as a general and then as a gladiator. You got the other gladiators who slowly came to his side and then became his loyal fighters. This one as mentioned above, had no character building and showed us no reason why anyone would be loyal to the main guy. It was more about Denzel’s power grab and the freaky emperors.

The Baboons were like something out of a 90s Xena Warrior Princess episode. Terrible. How did that make its way out of post production?

Bingo. It's all about the characters. The first one had such outstanding primary characters. Solid solid secondary characters. Just built it's people up so well. The second one struggled to have ONE really good character. I liked Denzel alright, but I admit I keep seeing him as Alonso from Training Day. Ha ha

The opening battle scene in the original Gladiator is one of my favourite opening scenes of a movie ever.

Just shows the skill, coordination and efficiency of the Roman legions and you can see why they ended up conquering so much of the known world.

I did always wonder what happened to the dog though. Would have been a whole different movie if Commodus has killed it instead of the wife and kid 😂

Yes sir. I'm so OCD that the first stretch of a TV show or movie really is critical for me. That opening scene in the first one was epic. Just raw great footage..

It was not the complete disaster I was told it was. I enjoyed it. Weird how not one of the actors thought of picking up a weight prior to filming and the sharks were a completely irrational and unnecessary addition. Unknown (to me,) lead was solid. Denzel outclassed and ate up his scenes of the rest of the cast so he didn’t fit from that perspective alone for me.

6/10 worth seeing once.

How the hell do they fill the coliseum with enough water to allow huge boats to sail and then ship in the sharks? WTF was that?

Well I'd start by sealing the dirt ground. Maybe a bunch of trash bags? Wait they didn't have trash bags. A form of silicone paste that hardens to seal? Oh wait. Uh. It's impossible. The amount of water pressure and pipe size to accomplish this would be crazy.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Seems very illogical that they can keep enough water depth and also the space for big ships like that to be able to maneuver at all. But I learned. something new today
