Gladiator 2 Official Thread - For those who are about to die, we salute you. (1 Viewer)

Braveheart was a fun movie but if we are getting hung up on historical accuracy there may be some nits to pick there

I took a first date to Braveheart in college. She did not seem to appreciate the 12 minute battle scenes with closeups of arms being cut off and the like as much as I did.
Best AND worst first date night movie selection ever.
At least you'll know right away if a second date would even be worth it.

It's interesting that people are bringing up John Wick as a comparison point. I like John Wick quite a bit, and it's pretty easy to explain why I find it a more pleasant watch than Gladiator. John Wick is a live-action cartoon that makes absolutely no pretense of being anything other than a stylistic, hyper-violent Hong Kong film. It has a 1:41 run time that feels about half that long. It's filmed meticulously so that you can see every little detail of every fight scene, or at least it seems like you can.

Gladiator is an action movie that purports to be a historical drama. It has long breaks from any kind of action, it goes on and on for 2:35, and the action sequences are filmed with jump cuts that hide what the characters are doing. Sure, they're both "revenge" movies, but they're pretty different otherwise.

I dont think he magically appeared anywhere. The games were banned in Rome, which is why he was taken to Africa....then Commodus reinstates the games, so they have to get fighters from somewhere it was already legal

You want to make the argument that a couple of the fights are a bit over the top....maybe I buy that. But I'm pretty sure thats kind of the point of making a movie about a hero soldier. And I dont think any of the fights were over the top absurd like John Wick. (which I still LOVE by the way)

I'd argue that the William Wallace character suviving the main battles in Braveheart was far more ridiculous based on what we saw on film.

Wallace at least had an army with him and did die in the end. But nobody can beat the great Gladiator! No siree, he beat them all. And now he's making sequels!
This is literally the ending plot of Gladiator. Maximus wins his army back and dies at the end. :lmao:

I like Gladiator a lot better than John Wick because of the deeper plotline, but I fully agree that they are very different movies from one another. I mean, they basically have the same thing in common that Revenge of the Nerds and Enough do.

My comment was more about one guy being a "regular" guy or a superhero.

In that vein it's similar to Wick or even Die Hard

All movies I love but all contain 1 dude who is over the top badass

I thought it was fine. The story itself wasn’t anything special. Good battle/fighting scenes although as I age I’ve found myself less and less interested in watching that.

Well, did you guys like it?

First one sucked. no need to torture myself further.

Gladiator was a masterpiece compared to Troy - easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. You want torture, try to siting through that one.

Achilles battling the giant is still one of my favorite scenes though.

ACHILLES!!!
Movie is memorable for that scene alone.
And that's why no one will remember your name.

No doubt. I actually thought about mentioning that scene as a caveat. IIRC that was pretty early on and the rest of the movie was just utterly painful. I saw it opening weekend and felt like I was stuck in the theater for what seemed like an eternity. I've only walked out of two movies (Armageddon and Twister) but this was close.

Some people love going out of their way to say how much they hate a movie.

For cool points?
It's a thread about Gladiator 2. It kind of makes sense that people might discuss the original film here. It's not like somebody is parachuting into the Ravens/Chargers game thread to talk about minor historical inaccuracies in the first movie.
I parachuted into that thread with a tiger under my arm, with an Aussie Scottish accent. I killed that thread because it needed killing. It shoulda armed itself, ifbit was gonna decorate its saloon with my dead dig. And now, I’m gonna kill you, Little Bill.

Troy has some pretty great scenes, but yeah, not comparable
Interesting. The movie that I compared G2 to last night was Troy.

I literally (and I don't use that word lightly) rolled my eyes at the final speech and scene. Corny doesn't begin to describe it.

Troy had better fight scenes

Some very hard to please reviewers in here.....but hey it's all opinions.

We liked not loved G2.

Will I rush to watch it again? Nope. It was entertaining for one watch on the big screen as this is a big screen film but was nothing like the original in terms of characters, story and caring for the outcome. It had some fantastic and over the top coliseum battles and I personally really liked Denzel's role and where it went.

But overall a B- and a completely unnecessary sequel.

Denzel was one of the only really good things about the movie.

Saw an interview with him and he compared this movie to godfather 2. I was like what the hell you smoking buddy

Lord really? LOL that's crazy talk. Put the pipe down now Denzel.

But yeah his character stood out.

Denzel is almost always great. Sometimes he had a look on his face like "I know this is trash, but I'm gonna ham it up!" He chewed up every scene he was in.

I avoided this thread because I didn't want Gladiator II spoilers but instead it was just people arguing about other movies. I guess that's how this place operates.

GII used 80% recycled plot points from the original but everything was bigger and more ridiculous. That's not a criticism because I was entertained by the new one. The scenes with Denzel and the emperors were pure comedy and the action scenes started off over-the-top and ratcheted things up higher and higher right up to the rather disappointing climactic fight. It's a Ridley Scott film so everything looks terrific but somewhere in the past quarter century, he's decided that audiences want spectacle more than any semblance of historical authenticity--the Romans might as well have been fighting an army of orcs.

I would rather watch Troy over John Wick. Troy is more my genre and I find movies like Wick to be awesome for about 10 minutes. Then it’s just sensory overload.

Gladiator is aight.

Braveheart could use much of the extras fighting in the backgrounds of the battles scenes being CGI’d out. Some of the absolute worst.

Braveheart = Die Hard > Gladiator >Johnny Dangerously> Troy > Carebears II New Generation > Wick> Carebears (OG)

Woah. Woah. That first Care Bear movie from 1985 came out in a time where I really needed the idea of the Care Bear stare.

Was pretty meh. Main guy was no Russell Crowe.

The sharks really bugged me  I mean there’s dumb then there’s really dumb.

Loved the first one.

Didn't like this one.
- Glad they had the Spartacus mentor early on. Cool tribute to Doctore.
- Denzel's character kind of sucked. Guy rides into Rome, 2 days of fights later he's advising Emperors. Umm, yeah.
- Ever been to a going away party for a co-worker and can't hear what's said right in front of you from the supervisor? Now be amongst 11,000 soldiers and hear the final speech by a guy no one knows. Closest person was 50+ feet away. Guys in the back were like 'who dafuq is this guy?'. No wait, cheesy raising of solidarity.
- Only person to validate who he is just died on a float.
- Greatest cleanup job of the night award - no bodies in the arena after a slaughter, rioting in the streets, and all the soldiers are at the gate.
- Cool way to take down the rhino.

Finally watched this. It's now on Paramount plus.

I think the big negative to this movie is that it follows a really really good first one. Hard for a sequel to follow Mr. Crow and Mr Phoenix in those epic roles.

Overall it wasnt great. It wasn't horrible. It was meh. Had it's moments. Loved the guy on a rhino entrance. Denzel was decent.

Was entertaining but too close to the plot of the first, the twin emperors were not good and I didn’t like the seemingly forced connections to part 1. I was disappointed overall.

Forgettable for many reasons. I found Denzel's Brooklyn accent distracting.

The search for more money strikes again.

Denzel was the best part for me too because he was the one part that seemed original.
Outsider rides into town on a chariot.
Literally 2 days worth of games later (no time lapse of multiple months/years) and he's the most trusted advisor that gets alone time with not just 1 emperor, but 2?
Yeah...

Definitely didn’t make sense. Just seemed like the only character who wasn’t copied and pasted from the original.

I watched Gladiator 2, but since it had been a while, I watched Gladiator right before it to make sure I was completely up to speed.

It's the same movie. I literally felt like I just watched the same movie back to back. Action was great. Some scenes were great. But it's the SAME MOVIE.
