GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (12 Viewers)

Years ago, like before the innerwebs were here, I read an amazing account written first hand by a guy who rode out Andrew or Hugo. My mind sucks, sorry. Anyway, he found safe harbor in some small Caribbean island and well, it was harrowing to read. I share this here in case anyone knows what I am talking about and can link to it. I read it in an old fashioned thing called a magazine in some place called a library. I would love to read it again. He describes the sound of the wind as sheet metal whipping overhead at 120mph. Anyone?
You want us to go to the library?

OK.  He's not good about checking this site, or PMs, or email, or most other things.  If you want to reach him, you might find it best to send to or copy me, though I'll mention this to him.  My email is [firstname][a][lastname]@gmail.  Without the brackets, and with the real names filled in, you know.
I expected an attorney to be much sneakier in disguising an email.

Not s big deal, I buy a lot of vinyl and wanted to get more info on his friends store. Somewhere in the midwest or something

Louisville.  I'll try to get him to respond, but I'm telling you it's just not easy. :(

I have to start drinking so you guys understand me again. I want someone to remember that to which I referred, find it, and share. It was one of the best reads I can remember. Literally made you feel like you were there.
The story made you feel like you were in a library?  Sounds amazing.

Unless it's this, I don't.

@DA RAIDERS any word from your sister?
radio silence. :(   i've heard from a few people on st thomas, but no one from st john.  there is one couple that lives on the other side of the island that have a sat phone.  they will be posting lists of people that check in with them.  but i don't think my sister knows them and being on the other side of the island, there's no way my sister will go over there.

thx bud.  i think she is probably fine.  the house they went to is a freaking bunker.  but it's still harrowing.  the part i hate is that her ex took my nephew to their house, to ride the storm out there and it's not quite the bunker the other one is.  there was a mandatory curfew in place for wednesday until thursday at the earliest.  i expect news to start flooding out tomorrow.

Papillon?

My grandmother rode out Hugo on St. Croix in '89.  She described it as a train the entire time with the worst part being the quiet when the eye came over in the middle of the night.  Here's how wiki describes it:

The slower speed allowed Hugo to punish the island of St. Croix with the worst beating of any location along the hurricane's destructive path. At 2 am local time on September 18, Hugo's eyewall struck St. Croix, bringing Category 4 winds, sustained at 140 mph (220 km/h). The hurricane's gusts were remarkably violent, and many residents witnessed tornado-like vortices barreling across the island as the hurricane raged about them. A storm surge of 2–3 ft (0.61–0.91 m), topped by battering waves 20–23 ft (6.1–7.0 m) high, assaulted the coast, adding to the destruction. Two people were killed on St. Croix, 80 injured, and 90% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed. Damage estimates for St. Croix were astronomical, over $1 billion, and the island's entire infrastructure was virtually wiped out. Six weeks after the hurricane, only 25% of the public roads had been cleared, and only 25% of the island had power."
My aunt found her 3 days later sitting on the rubble of her house with a shotgun.  We never figured out how she got it :oldunsure:

I hope your family is OK @DA RAIDERS

Papillon?
I shaved my head at some point in college... soccer teammates thought I looked like papillon. was not a good look- especially since it turns out I have a conehead. longest no-sex dry spell of my college days.

eta: and #### steve mcqueen too.

At McCarran. The signs on the carousels are broken, so we are listening for overhead announcements, which sound just like an adult in a Peanuts cartoon.

my sister got through for a couple minutes.  everyone is ok.  devastation is the word she used.  worse than marilyn.  the roof of her house is gone.  she hasn't been there yet, to assess the complete damage

But unless you're driving around Haiti or something, what are the odds you get into an accident with some degenerate with no car insurance?

Dammit I guess I should get it. So stupid.
Happened to me 10 yrs ago.

I just convinced 5 or 6 kids that I actually thought Charlie Brown's dog was named "Snappy".

His little bird friend? Woodstick.   And Lucius is the dork with the blanket.

They bought it for about 5 minutes.
