GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (8 Viewers)

Can anyone pin down when the Age of Backpacks began? Nobody wore them in my era, how about it, some of my fellow oldsters, @Ditkaless Wonders or @wikkidpissah?

Which reminds me, we should probably have an Old Guys Thread About Everything, etc., too. Where we talk about old timey stuff that only we remember and our increasing frailties. And pooping.
Best i can remember, Eurotrekkers started it. When i ran away from home in '70, i did so with a pack on an aluminum frame with room at the bottom to tie on a bedroll but, when i hitched Europe in '74-5 it was with a North Face rucksack. Got all sorts of comments & questions from Yank tourists, but the Euros were already down to half that size. LLBean got on board bigtime, but the ski-oriented colors of NorthFace appealed to the kids, who were the next demo to embrace it. By the late 70s, Gucci had a soft leather one that appealed to the yuppies and boom.

ETA: good idea to have a Yorkshireman thread

No improvement in concussion symptoms.   Today she got accepted to a long-term concussion study through two Seattle-based hospitals.   She will randomly be assigned to either the control group on the treatment group (it's 50/50).   The treatment group has shown early signs of shorter recovery periods, so that would be a plus.

School is a nightmare.   We have a 504 plan, but some teachers follow it and some ignore it.   Her French teacher pressured her into doing a large project that is exactly the type of screen-time heavy assignment she's not supposed to do, and has also marked her missing assignments as unexcused (she's not supposed to be giving her those assignments in the first place).   I asked the administrator to intervene last week; she didn't.  I asked again yesterday, with a copy to the principal, and she said Roverkid had agreed to do the assignment.  I explained that her teacher pressured her into it and she tried to stand up to her and tell her no, but the teacher insisted (thus my request for intervention).   Told her that Roverkid should not be put in the position of administering her own plan or standing up to teachers that ignored it.   Reminded everyone involved that this is a federal law relating to disabilities that is being violated.

They also suggest that Roverkid may be getting incompletes in all of her classes.

We're having another meeting next week.   I insisted that the principal be there, and suggested that if he wasn't that I'd be contacting the district superintendent.

Fun times.

I dont know your story here, but I had one three years ago next month.

It healed well except for the last one percent.  During the last two years, bending down quickly, any type of coughing and a few other things would cause mini concussions and pain that would last two to three hours.  It became really frustrating after awhile.

Doctors could not figure out how to get past this.   Went to Oregon coast for first time two months ago.  Picked up some CBD oil.   Healed it right away.  Hope this help you or anyone else out there.

Yeesh.  What a nightmare.   No idea why her school is fumbling around when it comes to a 504.  Do they know you're a lawyer?

I've chosen to use my firm email for all correspondence rather than my regular chargers.suck address, so yes.   Also lightly reminded them that she was injured at a school-sanctioned event.   They're well aware that they didn't even check her for a concussion and that she continued playing.

Oof.

if they had conveniently forgotten this, then you sternly worded legalese email should be enough for them to take action i'd think.
My emails are more kindly-worded and written in plain English, with subtle threats interwoven with my suggestions of appropriate actions.

time to go scorched earth.  on all of them.  i would reach out to the super nintendo now.

the bureaucracy. greed and fear of litigation, (you might want to ramp up this angle) paralyzes most of the capo school employees down here.  that, and being totally overwhelmed with 32+ students in class.

Not sure what your state laws are, but I know in NJ, we can have a representative attend 504 meetings with us. I know you're a lawyer, but I'm guessing you don't have expertise in this particular area. Maybe it's time to use some lawyer connections and find someone to attend the meeting with you. School administrators can be really dumb and lazy. But they're also often spineless and will fold when threatened by someone who obviously has more expertise than them. You may also want to find out who is in charge of special services for the school. They often have just as much authority as the principal (more in cases pertaining to stuff like this), and have more sense.

ETA: When we were dealing with some issues with my daughter's school, they refused to budge on a few things. Thankfully, my wife was part of her school's IEP team when she taught and knew the exact laws they had to follow and the exact buzzwords that had to be used to get movement. We got our way on everything that we wanted. It pays to know the laws and the system.

We may get there.  The principal seems to understand the gravity of the issues.   The counselor, not so much.   The teachers have two approaches--three of four don't give her homework, but also have no plan for testing her and then complain that they can't pass her without a plan to test her--this is where the suggestion of incompletes came from.     The problem there is we have a plan for testing and it's in the 504.  Open note and/or oral exams, depending on the class, with the tests broken up by unit so that she's not taking on long final exam.

French teacher just ignores the plan, hands her homework that she doesn't do, and then gives her 0's.    She also quizzes her once a week, which is fine.   She passes every one.     Now she's given her this large project, which she was specifically told not to do.    This is where I'm declaring war.   Surrender should be forthcoming.

Get her a rolling backpack and have her run to class.  Seems to work for all my Asianed students.
Will also make her look like she's late for her connecting in O'Hare/Diamond Club Level free cocktail in the Sky Lounge before she gets on her United flight for a meeting with her company's board of directors in DFW.
like this?

Given that it's french class and their propensity for throwing up the drapeau blanc at the first site of conflict, I'll make the opening money line with you being the favorite at -1200.

With what you likely make per hour, the filing fees for suing them are probably cheaper than the amount of time you're about to spend.

Never saw them through the mid 70's, except for, you know, actual backpacking, camping, hunting.  We just carried our books in our arms from class to class and to home and back.  Then, off to college and everybody had one.  I got a JansPort.  Books, notebooks, calculator extra shirt or sweatshirt,  cigarettes, lighter, pens, frisbees, pot, keys, hacky sac, and soon after maybe a Walkman and a few tapes, perhaps a spare headband, a beer or three, rolling papers, some condoms, acid, gorp, the essentials.

7th grade math home work. is the ####### worst.

question;  what is 65% of 25?

dad's answer .65x25=16.25

what the teacher wants

eta:  the "show your work" space on the homework is the size of a postage stamp.  so stupid

:lmao:   See, this is why we need an Old Guys Thread About Everything thread. These genexers never went through prolonged periods of total debauchery like we did. I mean, where the debauchery was the norm. And I don't even know what "gorp" is.

No politics: "new/CORE" math is a friggin communist conspiracy.  Math is.....MATH.  Beetches.
I like some of it.
took a bit of getting used to while our 11yo was coming up, but I'm really liking it now for our 7yo who's less intuitive with understanding math- more visual/conceptual. the new stuff makes a lot of sense in teaching kids how and what math is- even for me- and I like that it's not just rote memorization, but learning the concepts.

Seems like I started seeing them a lot when I went to college in '75. I don't know if that's when it started, but it when I started seeing them a lot. Could've been a college thing.

Did you EAT THE WHOLE THING!?!?!  I've never partaken but have been told by experienced homies to only do a sliver or else I'll end up in Cloclwork Orange for a period of time.

When can we hike together?  Or, barring that, c'mon up to somewhere north of you south of us for some booze, edibles optional?
