In 1995, years before the incidents in Washington, Wilmington and Madison, The Economist magazine used the word "#####rdly" in an article about the impact of computers and productivity: "During the 1980s, when service industries consumed about 85% of the $1 trillion invested in I.T. in the United States, productivity growth averaged a #####rdly 0.8% a year." The Economist later pointed out with amusement that it received a letter from a reader in Boston who thought the word "#####rdly" was inappropriate. "Why do we get such letters only from America?" the British magazine commented.

Were not a smart people

On January 15, 1999, David Howard, an aide to Anthony A. Williams, the mayor of Washington, D.C., used "#####rdly" in reference to a budget.[3] This apparently upset one of his black colleagues (Howard is white), identified by Howard as Marshall Brown, who misinterpreted it as a racial slur and lodged a complaint. As a result, on January 25 Howard tendered his resignation, and Williams accepted it.[4] However, after public pressure from LGBT individuals, an internal review into the matter was brought about, and the mayor offered Howard the chance to return to his position as Office of the Public Advocate on February 4. Howard refused but accepted another position with the mayor instead, insisting that he did not feel victimized by the incident. On the contrary, Howard felt that he had learned from the situation. "I used to think it would be great if we could all be colorblind; that's naïve, especially for a white person, because a white person can't afford to be colorblind. They don't have to think about race every day. An African American does."[4]

It had been speculated that this incident inspired Philip Roth's novel The Human Stain,[5] though Roth has stated his source was an incident in the career of Melvin Tumin.[6]

Public response[edit]
The Howard incident led to a national debate in the U.S., in the context of racial sensitivity and political correctness, on whether use of #####rdly should be avoided. As James Poniewozik wrote in Salon, the controversy was "an issue that opinion-makers right, left and center could universally agree on." He wrote that "the defenders of the dictionary" were "legion, and still queued up six abreast."[7] Julian Bond, then chairman of the NAACP, deplored the offense that had been taken at Howard's use of the word. "You hate to think you have to censor your language to meet other people's lack of understanding", he said. "David Howard should not have quit. Mayor Williams should bring him back — and order dictionaries issued to all staff who need them."[8]

Bond also said, "Seems to me the mayor has been #####rdly in his judgment on the issue" and that as a nation the US has a "hair-trigger sensibility" on race that can be tripped by both real and false grievances".
I learned so much this past 30 minutes.

So, found out this weekend (from the guy in freaking Minnesota who bought it) some kid walked off with a school iPad and had an acquaintance drop it in the cellphone/tablet kiosk-thing at Kroger.

Loving the fact that the turd who sold it is 21 and the police have ID'd him.

Not loving working out how to get it back while making sure the purchaser gets a refund.

1. One of the future entrepreneurs in my district walked off with a school iPad. One of the 1200 or so I have to maintain.2. This enterprising gentleman (or lady), took it to Kroger and sold it for $80 via the unmanned electronic kiosks some electronics reseller has set up there).

3.we didn't get it reported as stolen quickly enough, and the reseller, well, resold it. To a dude in Minnesota.

4. Apple's Device Enrollment Program is keeping that dude from resetting and activating the iPad.

5. Somehow that guy found my e-mail address and now I have to work out getting the iPad back and a refund for him.
1) Get a police report

2) Contact the company he bought I from

3) Tell said company they sold stolen property and that you want it back and they need to issue the guy a refund.

Or, just tell the guy he has stolen property and that he needs to contact the seller for the refund but send you the iPad right away. You have no duty to him. He is legally required to return the iPad to you whether he gets a refund or not. It's his responsibility to go after the seller for selling him stolen goods
Yep. Working on all of this. He's been very cooperative. The resource officer had to rework his report because he told me they were making an arrest today and his supervisor wanted that included.

Hey old friends..

I know there are a few Austin people in here.

Going to be there next weekend - Friday through Monday - on Saturday I'm going to some Indy Car endurance race, but other that, have some free time with a work buddy.

Any suggestions on things to do are most appreciated.

I assume this has been covered 500 times in here, but it's just me and a bud looking to have some fun for a night or two.

What kind of things do you like? Outdoor stuff? College chicks? Bbq?

I think bar scene would be preferable of all 3 listed (see: college chicks).

Have some good whiskey, maybe a steak, karoake, you know...the usual

Sounds like Sixth Street is the most bang for your buck. Where are you staying?

Friday lunch at Perrys. Get the pork chop

Friday night on 6th. Get laid and do Jell-O shots

Saturday - boring race stuff

Saturday night - the minus 5 at the continental club

Sunday - brunch at Perlas or Clarks

Perfect. Thanks Abe.

Staying at some #### hotel I don't plan to be in much

The race is dumb too but my buddy won some Men's Journal drawing and so we get VIP down to the pits, all you can eat and drink catered "box" (or whatever the equivalent is).

I like the itinerary.

I reached out to cos - but if anyone else is around Friday night and wants to cornhole it up, let me know.

West 6th is the best for chasing young poon. J Blacks, Kung Fu Saloon, The Ranch, etc. They are all pretty much the same. There's a place called Pop that I went to last night that apparently gets a lot of weekend bachelorette parties because most of their signature drinks involve champagne.

We do a lot of brunch here. I would definitely agree with Abe on that one. Moonshine is still pretty well regarded but the wait is huge. I'm also a big Perla's fan. Heard Odd Duck has a good brunch. My favorite is Fork and Vine but it's pretty far north.

Had dinner last Saturday night at a place called Second Kitchen on Congress was really good. Perla's also strong for dinner. Juliet also new in town and great. And Uchiko is top notch. The last three places are going to require a reservation.

Goes without saying that the track is way the #### out in the middle of nowhere and there's nothing at all going in the area other than stuff at the track itself.

If you like bourbon or whiskey go to Blackheart on Rainey.

Would replace brunch with getting breakfast tacos or breakfast burritos somewhere awesome.

love Whiskey. I'm there.

I don't do carbs so choices are limited to nice steakhouses on that front.

Can I ride a mechanical bull naked anywhere?

There are no great Austin-only steakhouses. I think Eddie V's downtown is clearly the best steakhouse in the city.Apparently there is a place on west 5th called Rowdys that has a mechanical bull. I'm sure it would be totally fine if you rode it naked.

I heard a joke today.

Did you hear that the boot of Missouri is going to become part of Arkansas? The good news is that both of our State's IQ's will go up!

This would be the first time I've heard this "joke". IQ jokes aren't all that popular on my crowd.

Today my son got a chance to play running back. He took the hand off and ran straight out of bounds, celebrating his "touchdown" when he crossed the line.
:lmao: :lmao:

Dylan had a baseball game tonight. He walked twice and then came around to score both on three more consecutive walks after his AB. He walked over to me, took a big gulp of water out of his jug and declared with a big smile on his face "how did you like that?! Two homeruns!".

Well that $2 PK pick in the FBG contest isn't going to last 2 weeks. Last time I go with 2 PKs ...dammit
####ing FBGs. I went to put in my roster today, you know before the season started, and contest cutoff was yesterday.

Suck it, Rude.

Not unlike walking into a test and asking for a #2 pencil Mr. Shuke.
