They are basically the Puero Rican/Dominican version of the Korean grocery.some do. some either don't or keep them locked away until they close (if they close) or mistreat them so that they hide all the time.
some of them let the cats roam the sidewalk around the store- those are the best/friendliest cats.
some serve them for lunch specials.
I was trying to think of ways in which bodegas are NOT 7/11s... other than the goofy corporate uniforms, slurpees and rotating eternal hotdogs- it's a pretty good equivalent. oh- they usually have a limited deli counter with not great sandwiches, unless it's 5am and you're drunk in which case they make the best sloppy egg, sausage and cheese sandwiches ever.
each one is neighborhood specific in terms of what they sell/stock. some have santeria paraphenalia. some have lots of fancy organic crap. little bit o' everything from hardware to homeware to edibles. all in a tiny, packed space patrolled by a pack of cats.
Before a bunch of people say they have never heard of such a thing, those are small stores that are owned and operated by Korean immigrants, most commonly in New York and Los Angeles.
Those have cats too, but generally in the buffet.
