Off to sunny (& warm - it's ####### cold in my 'hood today, man) Mexico in the morning.  This time tomorrow I should be working my way through the airport, then outside, look for the sign with my name on it, hop in the van (with a pre-ordered bucket of beer for the ride), and an hour later be wiggling my toes in the sand. This year sucked all kinds of balls and I need a break.

I don't know, that little escapade with the two girls seemed pretty memorable.

I'm at the mercy of whoever my resort has a deal with at the time for draft beer (which is all the beach bars serve there) & what they put in your room's fridge - it's always been either Sol or Dos Equis (this is my 8th or 9th trip to this property). But the part of the resort I'm staying at has higher-end premium booze/wine/beer for the pool/lobby areas. They offer one called - I think - Bohemia, which is really good. And they'll have some of the better mass-produced American/Canadian beers (Moosehead, Michelob, IIRC, plus stuff like Coors Light).

I think the private transport company is filling my bucket with Dos Equis for the ride down.

There's a local liqueur they call Xtabentun. It's Mayan in origin. I could do shots of that forever. It's low enough ABV that it won't crush you if you do a couple/three shots an hour, but it'll get you to a mellow place really quickly - almost like weed, in a way.

No Modelo Especial?

Deal breaker, IMO.

OrtonToOlsen:

How many emails does a full time Middle School teacher get from parents a day/week?

Is "I can't be expected to reply to every email because I get so many" a genuine excuse for not responding (at all) to emails?
:lmao:  such bull ####.

I get like 7-8 work related emails a day.  I need to respond to maybe half of those.  The rest are "memos".

I can't speak for every teacher in American but if you get so many emails from parents that you can't respond to all of them...you're doing something wrong.

I like Modelo and maybe they'll have it this time around. I'd rank them Dos XX-Modelo-Sol. I do not like Sol, but I'll drink the hell out of it if that's what they have
Not a fan of the Dos Equis Lager. The darker one is fine for an amber beer to consume in mass quantities.

The word xtabentún means "vines growing on stone" in the Mayan language. It refers to the Christmas vine (Turbina corymbosa), a species of morning glory whose seeds contain ergine and have hallucinogenic properties. This has led Jonathan Ott to suggest that balché may also have had entheogenic qualities, although this remains to be demonstrated.[1] Ancient Mayas likely would have enjoyed the inebriating effects of a similar beverage to produce visionary and trance states. To do this, they would introduce the fluid into their systems using enemas which caused the substance to be directly absorbed into the bloodstream and result in much higher levels of intoxication.
This seems overly complicated.  Thank god I wasn't born in the 1200s.

That's what I thought.

This came up in a parents' group for the local middle school that my wife is a member of on Facebook. Another parent was complaining that she has sent emails to teachers about specific things and never received any reply, not even a simple acknowledgement that it was received.

But other parents in that group rallied in defense of the teachers who couldn't be bothered to respond by pointing out how many students they have, how overworked they are and how they couldn't possibly respond to the sea of emails they must surely get every day. That struck me as a BS excuse. Thanks for clarifying.

I'm with you....I have beer preferences and enjoy a wide selection of craft beers, but I'll drink whatever is cold and placed in my hands.

Pacifco Clara for the win, imo. :)   Have an excellent vacation.  My envy knows very few bounds.

I couldn't agree more.  People who "refuse" to drink Coors or Bud or whatever are doing it wrong.  It really doesn't taste like piss at all, and it's way better than water, or any other alternative.

Yep. These are what I lovingly refer to as "catalyst" beers - utilitarian and doing the job. I'm much more interested in the liquor I can try there that I can't get here.

There is a class of beer way, way below Budweiser that isn't really fit for human consumption though.

I don't know what piss tastes like, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was better than Black Label, for instance.

I'd like to defend teachers here for a second.  I have two kids in middle school.  That means I've attended more than my fair share of conferences, orientations, back-to-school nights, social gatherings, etc.  You know the worst part of any of these things?  The other parents.  Specifically other parents' questions.  I don't know if teachers are required to take a course in patience or putting up with parents 101, but I am constantly amazed at the restraint teachers show when bombarded with idiotic questions from Meghan's Mom or Davidson's Dad.   I can only imagine some of the emails that are received.

Pacifico is nice too, but is generally only available on the West Coast of Mexico.
and on Houston St and Ave A.

the MIL either must have come into some money or is feeling guilty about something... but is paying our way to join her down in Cozumel for spring break.

it's a tough call.

but damned skippy I'll be drinking the Pacifico whether we go or not.

It is in grocery stores all over the US.

Let's be fair about it

I concur with this. With that said, basic professionalism would dictate at least acknowledging receipt of an email, even if it contained something ####### stupid.

Again I can't speak for every teacher but not replying to emails because they are too busy is a cop-out.  It takes just a few seconds to reply with "I got your email.  I am teaching right now but I will reply back as soon as possible".  Or "I think it would be better to discuss this over the phone.  When would a good time for me to call you?"

I agree but email is a godsend.  Back when I first stared very few people had email.  It's 300x better than trying to talk to people on the phone.  And I can attach grade reports, missing assignments, etc etc.

Awesome. We've been to a couple different places just slightly north of Playa Del Carmen. Love it there.

Do you leave the property to do stuff, or just stay put?
I usually stay put. The property is huge - couple hundred acres and about a mile of beach, surrounded by mangrove jungle. There are probably 20 different bars scattered throughout, another 20 different places to eat. Maybe 8 different pools, a few adults only. There are way more Canadians and Europeans that visit there than Americans.

My goals are: eat/drink/read. I've had sporadic luck in romantic pursuits while I'm there, but I'm not going there to try & get laid.
