I'm currently sitting in T8 in a modified bracket pool. This pool, you don't pick the entire bracket up front, but instead pick winners each weekend (64/32 then 16/8, now 4/2).
Top 4 positions get paid. Standings are like this:
1st 88 pts
T3 87 pts
T3
4th 85 pts
T8
T8
T8
T8 84 pts
Each final four game picked correctly is 10 points.
The final game, if picked correctly is 20 points
TOP FOUR places pay.
I figure I could play chalk KY over Duke and hope that a few people ahead of/tied with me do not and maybe sneak into the money
OR
I could play 2nd or 3rd most likely scenario and go for the gusto.
Thoughts?

Anyone in the top 4 who doesn't pick KY over duke is a moron. You should go for the gusto. WI/Duke at least.

My top 3 "go for the gusto" options would be:
WISC/DUKE with either WISC/Duke winning
OR
KY over MSt.
WISC/DUKE with either WISC/Duke winning
OR
KY over MSt.

Agree. I would go KY over MSU. I think MSU is less likely to be picked by the leaders than Wiscy. That way you get to keep KY as the most likely champ and hopefully get the 10 point bump from MSU to put you over the top.

Hedge with a separate bet on Kentucky to win the championship and then go for it in this pool?

Except if he misses on MSU it doesn't matter anyway since someone below him would have picked a KY/Duke matchup. He really needs to get both semifinals right and then the championship. Better off picking KY and Duke with the upset happening in the championship game since the chances of MSU beating Duke, Wisc beating KY, or Duke beating KY are all around 30-35%.

'Hopefully' referred to nobody above him picking MSU. Of course he has to get both semis right. What do you think is more likely to be picked by someone above him - KY over MSU or Duke over KY? I think the latter so I would go with the former.

Keep in mind, I live in NC. Duke fans all around.
But even if 1 or 2 people ahead of me pick Duke over KY, I still make the money.
