Cripes! Hate the idea of CPS. Wife and I joke about it at all the time because my son has a penchant for falling down and running into things pretty much constantly (related to his ASD). Combined with his fair skin, he's gone to school more than a few times with black eyes, bruises on his legs, back, etc.

On the people are stupid house buying topic:
1. We got a tiny bit more from them on inspection but nowhere near what would be "fair". Ultimately decided that this was the house we wanted so we'll take the good with the potential bad. The amount they gave us helps.
2. On the house we're renting, I had offered them an amount that I knew was fair based on what they could get in its current state minus discounts for not having listing fees, loss of rent, inspection uknowns, preparation, etc. They countered with a ridiculously high amount that basically sent a message they weren't even willing to negotiate further (came down basically 25% of the way to my offer) so I walked away. I figured if they were bluffing, they would chase with another offer and if they were that delusional, negotiation was pointless. They walked away. Anyway, now it turns out, they are desperate for money and want to list without making an updates or repairs AND while we're still in the house with 3 years of clutter, 2 small children and a dog. The realtor says she's going to list for the amount they countered to me, that means by the time they pay brokerage fees, lost rent before close and any issues that come up on inspection, they will clear less cash than my initial offer. So stupid. We weren't super excited by this place but I would have bought it at that price just for the financial aspects. I could have dropped 40k or 50k into it and likely sold it in 2-3 years for a decent profit.

I should probably be enraged or scared ####less but JFC what a joke. Immodestly I would say I'm one of the most involved dads around. I have to take it seriously & cooperate (to some degree) and get it cleared, but what a GD farce of a system. Complete waste of resources.

Child Protective Services showed up at my door while I was doing homework with my first grader. It's a little fuzzy who reported me or what I am being accused of, but I did not initially let them in my home. After I read their form letter and realized both parents are under investigation I let them have a look around & setup a meeting for Tuesday. Beyond that should probably leave the details for later.
It's complete bull#### but at the moment it's a problem that needs resolution. Not sure who is behind this, what triggered it or anything. There's always tension between my daughters mom & I but we're not at a state of war. Kind of bizarre.
Oh, & the Red Wings are choking away their close out.

Seems far fetched / paranoid.Chloe is known to be super happy & is flourishing at school, dance & piano. She is blossoming [in a way] that children only can when they are surrounded by a loving environment.
But her mom & I (we were never a couple/unplanned/long story) do have occasional blowout shouting matches. Could have been one of our respective neighbors made a call. Or a teacher or aid or one of her extracurricular teachers noticed/heard something and made a poor choice.
Will find out more soon enough.

Reading their letter, the end game here is "Unfounded." That's the objective. Whatever/whomever started this, that's the expected outcome. The only thing I'm focused on is how to move the investigation to that stage. That's the only thing right now. Then it gets filed away and sealed.

So I spoke with my lawyer late last night. I don't actually have a guy but he's our outside counsel and if I ever needed he would be. He helped me out of a personal jam several years ago and is a personal friend.
We exchanged a couple emails and since I'm meeting this morning he called me after dinner. We talked over several possible scenarios; he wanted me delay meeting with the investigators (2 social workers) and/or for him to be present. I opted to not go that route. I'll record the meeting and obviously be very careful about answering any questions. I can call/text him at any time or end the meeting at any time. Main objective is to figure out what it is they're investigating and determine (at least directionally if not specifically) who reported "us." Quotes because it's possible my daughters mom launched a pre-emptive strike because of the milk run incident*. I'm not going to bring that up, it's none of their business.
*the mom recently left my daughter sleeping at 6:30 a.m. to run across the street. She didn't wake up but I thought it was inappropriate.
Anyway, won't resolve anything today but at least I'll have a better sense of what I'm dealing with. The more I think it over, the mom choosing the nuclear option is the most likely genesis. Although a couple years ago, during preschool parent-teacher it was brought up that the otherwise free-spirited happy kid does have a moody day once in awhile, and when questioned it turned out she was bummed out because mommy and daddy were screaming at each other. We haven't had one of those incidents lately but it's possible that my daughter said something - in class, Afterschool, during ballet or piano - which caused a well meaning concerned adult to call CPS rather than approach me about it.
Little more concerned this morning than I was last night. Probably blows over and ruled "Unfounded", but it's possible this could become a nightmare. Either way, even its closed and sealed, it'll remain on file. So I got that going for me, which is something other than nice.

if it was the ex... dumb, dumb, dumb to initiate ANYthing with CPS unless you're clearly putting daughter at risk... like... say, not having milk in the house.
if it was somebody who saw a yelling match- it better have been a doozy. can't imagine caring enough about the kid to call CPS, yet not approaching the parents first if I really did care about the kid (unless the kid was obviously milk-deprived). I wouldn't consider this person "well meaning".
told the wife about your situation- her first words were "get a lawyer before anything happens".

I'm assuming get-the-fuok-out-of-my-life would not have been an effective response.
Going for a long walk in the park (not a euphemism).

No mere formality. This is an official investigation; stays open a minimum of 60 days. A finding report will be filed. Recommendations will be made. Best case is it can be sealed - and requested to be reviewed / opened at any time during the next 12 years. At like say, oh I don't know, a future custody/visitation/support hearing?
I am trying very hard to not think of words that rhyme with runt.
I'm assuming get-the-fuok-out-of-my-life would not have been an effective response.

Seems like the easiest solution is to not be around baby mama when you're with the girl. Should be doable except on - you know - important events that you both want to attend.

Great story - about 8 minutes long.
This is my neighbor and friend Adrienne Ford. She just became the the NYS 154 pound golden gloves champ. She's been boxing for about three years. Started out as a workout to lose the baby weight, turned into a visionquest. Her twin boys are my daughter's BFF. When she's not wailing on people she's a producer for CBS Sports. Her title match this year was right in the middle of March Madness/The Masters, her busiest time of the year.

AYFKM? I don't know (or care) if she is in counseling. She is somewhat bat####crazy and I would not waste a single calorie going to counseling with her. We tried that for about six months several years ago because we were at one time having difficulty with solving simple problems together. That attempt mostly centered around BL's behavior modification. It was pretty one way and while I recognized that, I went along to see if it would clear the logjam and if she would get off her power trip. At a certain point the psychologist plaintively said to her: "He's made effort. He's been making attempts to meet you halfway. You don't seem to be willing to reciprocate. If you're not willing to meet him halfway, then there's really no point in continuing these sessions." So that was that.
My daughter's mom and I were never really a couple in the traditional sense. She was a sidepiece who I knocked up. (Neat aside - I was 46, she was 43.) She was apparently fully prepared to have the child without my knowledge or involvement, but when I discovered mid-way through the pregnancy she was having my child, I became an involved co-parent. Went to all the OB/GYN appointments and was present at the delivery. I have probably spent roughly twice as much time actively caring for my daughter than the mother. Chloe calls me Mopa, because she says I'm kind of a momma and a papa. We live less than a block apart, and though we don't especially like each other, by necessity we interact almost every day.
I do on occasion see a therapist - pretty sure there is a municipal code requiring all midtown Manhattan residents to have a shrink. I used to do it weekly, then bi-monthly, then monthly. Haven't been in a while but might book an appointment. If GM lived nearby, I could save a lot of money just buying him a couple beers.

Probably a good thing CPS never witnessed any of my family dinners growing up. My mother and father had some real doozies in the early 80s. Well, more like my mom flipped out while my dad smirked or remained silent, only fueling Mount Vesuvious Nesbitt into further eruptions. The highlight was when she spat a big lugie across the table at him, hitting him in the hair. He nonchalantly took another bite of tuna casserole. Good times on Wentwood Lane.
