I just got an email from one of the admins. Apparently this 14 year old student I have was just officially adopted (I really don't know what his back story is).

His first, middle, and last names are all changing.

WTF thinks it's a good idea to change a 14 Y/O kid's first and middle names?

The email I got today says that the kid's new name is DARREN JASON PARKER GRANT. Jason and Parker are middle names. Grant is the last name of his adoptive parents.

I live about 5 miles away from my childhood home

I think 80% of this country lives within 20 miles of their childhood home or some such stat. So I think that's normal, was just curious what the breakdown is here. Have you ever lived somewhere else?

I thought it was really cool on Saturday that there were THREE people at my house who graduated from Highland Park HS in 1991, which is only 2,000+ miles away from my backyard. And it's not like the three of us were all that tight in HS, though I did have a little crush on the gal who moved up here recently. Nor did we stay in touch after graduation. But we've been getting together a few times a year and it's pretty cool that we all landed in the same spot.

You should get her pregnant.

She's held up well...probably because she doesn't have kids or a husband and lived in Maui for 13 years.

A kid in my youth group changed his name twice this year. Of course that's because he went from being a straight girl, to a lesbian, to a bi-sexual boy. I feel bad because I'm constantly messing up names and pronouns.

If Tanner's kid is the one that wants to change his name because he wants to leave behind his past and start fresh, I can totally see that. If it's the parents that are trying to force a change on him, not so much.

Maybe "DJ" was for "David Jr." and he wanted a clean break from his old name?

I know a kid who was named after his dad (who was a POS) and went by "JT" (as in "Jim Tanner, Jr"). When his mom got remarried, his stepdad adopted him and he had his name legally changed to "Jay T [new dad's name]".

Very well could be. From what I got from the counselor "DJ" has not lived with either of his birth parents (no idea if they were married or together or what) for quite some time.

I'm always in awe at the wide range of culinary tastes in this thread. I prefer some heat or zing or punch with my wings. Never would it occur to me to dip it grape jelly. Why not douse it with chocolate sauce?

Sometimes you gotta try something that sounds weird before you knock it.

My wife has a "recipe" for meatballs in the slow cooker that she makes for parties. Put one bag frozen meatballs in slow cooker, add one bottle Heinz chili sauce, add one jar concord grape jelly and one can pineapple chunks (drained). The first time I saw it, I think I literally recoiled in horror. It sounds absolutely awful and I sneered at its white trashiness. It also produces perfect sweet and sour meatballs.

She was all alarmed because we just had a fraud issue that required Citibank to FedEx us new cards. When she found out it was for her gift she was relieved and pretty riled up (in a good way). I am a little fearful that I am setting up a level of expectations that I won't be able to (or won't want to) match in the future though.
