Challenge in what way?

Sorry they brought it up?  Like fire them?  TP their house? Flaming poop bag on frontstep?
I changed their quota and didn't deliver the message to them in a document (paper) form. They are challenging that, and seem to think that since I didn't print it and have them sign it that the change is void and thus they will be paid in accordance with the old quota, which will result in about half the team getting an extra $300 gross in the next paycheck.

So since they are interested in making sure everything we do abides by the exact letter of the law then some of the generosities I have provided them, generosities that are similarly ambiguous when it comes to employment law, will be changed to ere on the side of caution. Generosities like working from home some days, like having a manager modify their time sheet if they miss a punch. Etc. etc.

Sounds like a bargain.  $300 x half your team members will end up saving your company a lot of money in the long run.

Serious question:. Why did you change their quota?

Serious question:. Why did you change their quota?
Because when I took over the team they were massively underachieving. My plan is to raise their quota a little every few months until years end so that on target attainment meets company growth goals in 2017. They are being trained regularly to improve from being lazy order takers to actual salespeople.

The ringleader of this challenge isn't doing it because he cares about legal compliance but because he wants to show everyone how clever and smart he is.  And I am not going to have a team that behaves like that.

SP = serious biz
Justchecked and this post was deleted so yep. Basically I asked how to pronounce a 3rd string QBs name. Some guy responded with 'Doesn't matter' because I guess this QB is unlikely to be FF relevant. I replied with...

I bet it matters to him ### hole.

Clearly tongue in cheek. But whatever time to 'clean up' before the real money starts rolling in 6 weeks from now.

Ahhh...

Just asking because my wife went through this about 6-7 years ago.  She signed a contract that included a bonus/commission schedule that promised X amount per X sales.  Then when she beat the #### out of the quota by busting her ### they changed it..again and again until the quota was a joke.

That's actually pretty common practice. If the business is growing than salespeople should be given on target goals to make the money they were promised when they took the job.  If they do better than expected, they should make more. But recalibration of expectations is common over time as a business grows. Many salespeople (myself included) target jobs where the quota is misaligned with what is possible as a short-term way to make tons of money. But there is an expectation that at some point the quota will be aligned with the business at which point many salespeople will move on.

My current company is going through a transition in VP of marketing, so the lead flow is lower than it will be in a few months. So the quota I've assigned is based on the data around the leads we are getting so that if a rep does their job, they make what they expect. But in 6 months when we have three times as many leads, their quota will again be aligned with that activity by raising it or by I will be hiring more salespeople and diluting the number of leads per rep.

I treat my team unbelievably well.  On target they will all make about 100k despite all being in their mid-20's and none having a college degree. Free lunch a couple times each week, work from home program, expensive celebrations when the team hits quota.  My meeting Tuesday will be to let them know that things don't have to be so accomodating and comfortable if my generosity is going to be greeted with looking for loopholes to make a couple extra bucks.

Annnnnnnnd....this is why I never went into the private sector.   I hate "doing business".
There have been times when I have wondered how I ended up in this profession. I enjoy it a great deal but it brings tension that probably doesn't exist in a salaried environment.

But as with anything, there are good jobs and bad. I work really really hard to make my team as happy and comfortable as possible. I also provide clear growth paths and training for everyone that works for me and spend much of my day taking bullets on their behalf that they never even know where fired. So, once again, it makes me livid when stuff like this happens. The aforementioned ringleader was making 32k/year in customer service when I pulled him to my team two months ago. His salary and commission last month was about 8500 gross. And he lodged a complaint with out corporate overlords over $313 (in his case).

He thinks small and he thinks like a union employee.

This guy needs to change fast or he is going to be a lot more trouble than he is worth.

no offense, i love you Abe, but i've yet to meet a manager/boss who didn't think that he/she was magnanimous and amazing and fair and beyond reproach

Sounds like a great way to motivate them.

Just thinking about a sales job makes me wince, but I'm curious what your product is.  What do you sell?

My favorite sales manager move was the one who would go visit her sales team at home or go out for lunch with them and start making comments about their car or their house, trying to get them to spend beyond their means so they'd be forced to bust their asses to get the commissions to pay for it.   The sales guys unaffectionately called her the black widow because she got into sales after marrying a rich old guy who was in poor health and inherited a bundle when he died soon thereafter. Lovely group of people in that profession.

Yes, look at you
It keeps me from having some mgr changing my quotas so I don't make "too much" money. I make whatever I'm able to. I can also lose money. I'm a trader. I worked for free for 6 months last year, for example. I haven't had a salary for 23 years

Wouldn't you know there's an overly arrogant business term for being a decent human being.

In other words, keep screwing people over until people quit and only the desperate stay.

?  no one gets screwed over. They are paid fairly for the work done.  If they are unhappy with any aspect of the job they can go work somewhere else. That's how most businesses work.

Buying lunch twice a week for them...trusting that when they are home on the clock they are working and not watching TV...not blocking websites on their computers even though I know that collectively they watched ~100 hours of Netflix while on the clock/in office last month...

Yes, these are generosities and in now way obligations I have to my employees as a demonstration of being a "decent human being"
