GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (14 Viewers)

Once again, on the same page GB.  Mrs. SLB was out of town for 4 days and was pretty much destroyed the entire time but either had people over or took cabs.

As I just posed on FB, I was mistaken for Matt Holliday Saturday night at a concert which is even funnier when you're high and drunk.
Saw this on the Facebooks SLB. Too funny. Also realized that the person you mentioned is a good friend of mine back in the Lou. His son and mine were/are good buddies and went to the same private school together. Very small world.

The long hard discussions have been had, and I've scheduled surgery on August 24th.  I would never have known to even get checked if a relative hadn't casually mentioned around the end of the year last year "Oh, I have this hereditary thing that killed your grandfather and almost killed your father.  Haha, bet you were glad when you didn't have it."

No one had ever mentioned it to me.  Turns out it tried to kill me, too, same way it tried to get my father. Old goat was treated for the same type of aneurysm I have for over two decades and didn't need surgery. Or to mention it to his son, apparently.

I'm having a final night of light drinking before the push toward surgery and I'm reading 20th century poetry.  I'm allowed as long as I take a few blood thinners and drink plenty of water. The booze, not sure I'm allowed poetry.  Forgive me, I'm an old school introspective drinker sometimes.  In vino veritas, in whiskey weight.

I likely won't be around very much for awhile as I gear up to the 24th, perhaps the occasional bad joke about cows and politics and a bit of Olympic discussion. Assuming all will go well, but in any event, thanks GMTAN.  May your headstones hold the words of Rudyard Kipling, and deserve them. I have never known a more horrifying group of degenerates for whom I'd be proud to go to prison for helping hide a body.  May we all fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run.

If I die, all of my likes go to k4 for her birthday.

See you all on the 25th.
Where are you having the surgery?  What were your symptoms if any?

good luck. You will come through fine after being exhausted for a month or two.

I will drink more to pick up the slack in your honor, pig heart guy.

Godspeed and good luck.
Pig?  What is he, some sort of Philistine?  Only the primest-of-the-prime, Grade A Wagyu for our friend.

Give 'em hell, Hank.

Having the surgery on a local farm.  I understand they'll have modest facilities, but the beef will be fresh.

Symptoms - I've been having shortness of breath for the past couple of years, and it's gotten worse.  I had figured it was the years and years of smoking I did until quitting a few years ago, but it turns out that it's not a lung issue, it's a heart issue.  It wasn't bad enough to worry about anything but lung cancer, and I passed that one with flying colors.  The main reason I got checked was because of a family member letting me know that a hereditary issue exists in my family.  And lo and behold, I have an aneurysm in my aorta as a result of this valve issue.

And thanks.  I hear this isn't that big a deal anymore. I'm definitely making a bigger deal out of it than is likely warranted.

enjoying watching the olympics.  Last night watched a columbian weightlifter cry tears of joy after winning gold

Lilly King of the USA  taunted a Russian swimmer in the semis (for allegedly being a doper) and then called her a cheater and then beat her in the final for gold

Michael Phelps, in the semis last night, went into a dark space as the last man to beat him head to head in the Olympics,  Chad Le Clos, tried to taunt him in the waiting room by shadow boxing and twitching directly in front of him.   Phelps beat him by a second, which is a slaughter.

You ever been ##### slapped by a 6'7" man with a wingspan like that who makes his living doing the butterfly and backstrokes.  I mean those are perfect training exercises for issuing the slap, and his arms are nearly as long as bull whips.  I'm telling you, that would leave thuch a mark.

My Tuesday has gone sideways. My manager called me to say she was terminated yesterday, on what sounds like trumped-up charges. I am crafting an email of support to send to the COO and HR that will express our concerns without getting us canned as well by the new director none of us have met. We all work from home except Fridays, so it could be a long week. :oldunsure:

Watched and loved all those moments, too.   Did you see the stare-down that Lilly King put on the Russian just before they got on the blocks?  It was incredible - we went back and watched it again.  King is badass.

You're willing to get canned for her?

I admire your loyalty, but do you really want to insert yourself into this situation?

Probably not a good idea.

Sounds like a great idea to me.  Can't think of any downside risk.

I won't be as subtle.  THIS IS A HORRIBLE ####ING IDEA.

You don't know why they terminated her. She is giving you her story. I doubt it really has anything to do with Trump  ;) , but they wanted to get rid of her. You aren't going to change their mind. Leave it alone.

If you can't get answer's on why your boss was fired that company is not worth working for.
ASK the questions. If you get BS in reply, what incentive do you have to move up?

I've been fired (deserved it), laid off when the company lost a contract, and let go when another
company went through bankruptcy and closed our store in the re-structure. You get BS answers,
you start job hunting. Don't get fired over this, but fired for asking questions?

I for one find Kev's loyalty refreshing.  Sure, he may be unemployed soon, possibly homeless, but that's why he saves - nay FIGHTS FOR - his pennies.  That's why he clips coupons for strip club lunches.  That's why he gave up having magical outer space symphony conductor hair.  Loyalty trumps employment and salary.

Yeah!  Here's an idea - threaten to quit over something, like her firing. Companies love that.

yeah, i swam competitively for years and never seen anything like that.   It was hilarious.   The announcers were like "this is the greatest thing i've ever seen, don't cut for commercials".

she's a tough sob.   Its impressive to call someone out for cheating,  its more so to back it up with a beating on top of it.

wait, you can get coupons for the Acropolis?   why hasn't anyone told me?

It looked like the Russian was closing in and was going to win it with about 30 feet out, then Lily lit up the afterburners. Great job!

Thanks for everyone's support. This is part of the 'dispute resolution' process. No one is threatening to quit, and it will be signed by all of her direct reports. Also, the numbers being used as justification are specious, at best.

more impressive is anyone caring about something that no cares about until the ole them vs. us Olympics rolls around.  and even then I don't care.  go swim.  play your ping pong, jump on your trampoline, synchronize your dive, count me as meh.

she's already gone, though, right?   what possible upside is there for you to take up the side of someone they decided to can?

I'd steer clear of this whole thing.  the people that sign this are just creating a list of people on the chopping block next time they need to make cuts.

How was that?  I mean, apart from the half-naked men.
Well, that was clearly the best part. The boys enjoyed the boat a lot more than the wives leading up to the appearance of the water polo team. Definitely a cool tour. There's a self guided audio portion where you can get a brief history of pretty much anything on the boat.

Overall, San Diego is a glorious place and drunken good times were had by all.

Love SD. That tour is still on the to do list, though.
We bought these Go San Diego cards from Costco that were like $180 a person that included admission for four days to a ton of things - Zoo, LegoLand, Sea World, Safari Park, USS Midway, etc. It's a pretty good value if you're going to be doing a lot of activities while there.

Also agree on not wanting to leave. We rented an incredible house on AirBnB and spent the whole last day plotting how to kidnap the homeowner and force them to let us live there. Coming home to Texas in July was quite the meteorological shock.

Best way to support a terminated former coworker is with a referral, career advice if you have a good enough rrlastionship, and if you know someone hiring forward a link to them and say thought this would be perfect for you.  There's no reason to fight their battles at a job they won't return to and you don't know enough about the situation to safely get involved.

Be sure to call the drop as many MF bombs as possible.   Threatening the COO with an ### beating is good shtick to.  Maybe work in something about wrong holing his wife too.

Also, don't just send the e-mail to HR & COO, send it to the entire company.   They'll see the err of their ways won't dare #### with all of you.  Also make sure to hint that you are organizing a union now.

I rarely post in the hallowed halls of the GMTAN but this thread could use some levity so I will share a couple gems from a recent trip with my in laws.

When thinking of my FIL it will help if you image a cross between Frank Costanza and Russ Limbaugh.  Overweight, opinionated, conservative but not always living in reality.  A couple highlights from the week:

We are in a rental car and my MIL doesn’t fasten her seat belt immediately so the car starts dinging.  He freaks out insisting the rental car company monitors this and he will be hit with a $50 seat belt ticket.

We are swimming in the ocean and he is #####ing he doesn’t like this beach because the water isn’t deep enough.  Seldom am I at a loss for words but all I could do was slowly turn around and point to the horizon.

Anyone here remember travelers checks?   My FIL proved what a savvy traveler he is by leaving his credit cards at home and bringing only traveler checks.  I can tell you they were met with a mixture of confusion and amusement by the waiters and hotel staff.  In most cases the establishment was not equipped to handle them.  Of course this led us into the 21st century where I pulled out a credit card and paid.

Knowing each day would be filled with these painful encounters I did nothing to dissuade my FIL’s opinion I have a drinking problem.

Cliff Notes – nothing to see here
