GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (13 Viewers)

Took me three tries and over a month but I finally finished Force Awakens. Glad I didn't pay to see this.  Wasn't as bad as the drek that came out in 2000 but it wasn't good either.  Can pass on the follow ups.  Daisy Ridley could totally get it, though.
It's JJ Abrams.  The first is going to be an homage.  Expect better with the second.  His protege is directing the next one and he steps back to producer.

So far, Abrams has imploded planet Vulcan and run a light saber through Han Solo. I imagine his next project will be to tell us that Goonies aren't good enough.

But it's not a follow up. The next one is somehow in the middle!@#!#@!

Sometimes it's necessary.  Sometimes it's just a matter of which one you logged on with from a particular device.  Imp is pretty easy to spot.  I haven't seen him in a while.  If he's around, I expect he'll message me.
And when he rolls through he usually makes it a point to hit the GMTAN on a fly by, so I would expect that he's not been around lately.

It's the story of how the rebels got the plans to the Death Star. Disney is going to milk this for every single penny it can, and I'm willingly giving them my pennies.

so i drove into work after snowmageddon  2016 part duh,  it was like Falluja after the marines got done with it.   Cars splayed everywhere, people sleeping in their offices afraid to drive home, buses skidding sideways.  All from 2 inches of snow.    Honestly its embarassing for this city of supposed "outdoors" "adventerous" northwesterners  who allegedly are capable of handling the rugged outdoors that 1 out of 10 people actually knows how to drive in the snow

heard this was a bit more adult than the Force.

my 9yo barely made it through that harry potter offshoot- total wimp. he'll have to wait on this one.
13 and 11 so they should be fine. They really liked Fantastic beasts and where to find them.

when did GM become rugged?

BTW, if any of you are actually actually planning to watch tonight's NFL game, go out to your car and get your sunglasses. You'll need them. YWIA.

I went through Abrams's history to see what work of his I'm familiar with.  Regarding Henry I saw with a girl two years older than me going into my freshman year of college who broke my heart in the end, but did let me sleep with her a few times, so that movie is seared into my brain.  I was into Lost until I realized nothing ever happened and bailed.  Other than that, I'm completely unfamiliar with his work.

Force Awakens was not horrible, but it wasn't good.  It was too long, felt like a bad reunion show rushing ALL the characters back onto the screen for one last bow, the bad guy was weaker than Folger's coffee, the plot to blow up the big bad ship was the exact same as before, the budding romance between the hot chick and the black ex-stormtrooper was contrived, the non-masked bad guys were straight out of a bad 3rd Reich movie and I just never honestly CARED about what happened, which is why it took me a month and three tries to watch it.  But, the special effects were terrific, the sounds of the X-wing fighters and light sabers brought back the nostalgia for me and I think Daisy Ridley is spectacular to look at.

C-

And how the hell did the bad guy just show up out of the blue to surprise and attack Daisy when they were outdoors, but when she escapes in his own office building, he can't seem to find her?  They can't afford some security cameras?  They have the ability to harness the sun and blow up other planets, but they can't afford a few HD cameras?  Quesadilla?

so, got the dreaded "office lunch" invite.  I work for a big company and my group here is small, 9 people.  we do similar things, but not the same exact thing.  we report to the same mgr. who is located in another state.  so, lunch was today and mgr. came up from where he lives to be in the market for 2-3 days, take meetings and join us for lunch.  he is my 4th mgr. in 4 years.  at lunch he says he can't pay for everything, he doesn't have authorization to do so from his boss, but he'll buy 2 large appetizers for the group.

what's the etiquette call here?  in the past, our mgr. has either expensed or pulled out a personal card to pay and treat.  I figure the cost was around $10-15pp.  Me personally, I would pay no matter what.  he left before all of us to take a meeting, we all kind of snickered.

wanted to engage the group here..........

Haven't been been here in a while, but stopping by to drop the hottest of taeks:

Dating sucks*. I can't wait until I'm settled in with a wife and don't have to worry about all this bull####. Sure to draw some laughs from the married crowd (pretty much everyone here afaik), but seriously. I look forward to the day where my problems are generally "ugh, she wanted the washing machine here and now she wanted it over there" or "she said this shelf is too long and now says it's too short" as opposed to "will this woman I love ever talk to me again." JFC.

*More realistically, I probably suck at choosing women to date. But I need to vent.

Cancelled schools tomorrow too, last day before holiday break.  Not even considering taking a chance that this slush melts.  4 missed school days in a state that goes to school less than any other state in the nation.

It's true.  Ask anyone who's been married long enough - the sucking definitely stops at some point after marriage.  You can completely stop worrying about the sucking after marriage.

 Speaking of homeschooling…

A new family moved into our neighborhood this summer  and they have four kids.  Real nice people and are always outside doing yardwork, playing in their front yard and offering to help people rake leaves or shovel their sidewalks.

Turns out they homeschool and the dad is in sales so he travels quite a bit.  So the mother is at home with a toddler and three young school age children often times for days without her husband being home.  Since my wife stays home and I work from home as well the mom has become friends with my wife.

She is absolutely miserable.  Very sweet lady, feels like a prisoner in her own home.   Her husband is convinced homeschooling is the best option but she would like to send her children to public or private school so that she could have some semblance of a life during the day.

Also, her kids are very polite to adults but when the other children in the neighborhood play with their kids they all come home and complain that their kids are bossy and don't play well with the other kids.  It's gotten to the point where my wife has received calls from other mothers in the neighborhood asking her what they should do because nobody wants these kids around their children because their children don't enjoy playing with the homeschooled kids.

I told my wife to stay out of their family decision regarding schooling and unless one of their kids becomes impossible to deal with, our daughters should be as kind and accommodating as possible but once I explain to my own children why I think these kids don't play well with others I'm sure they are going to tell  The homeschool kids what their daddy thinks about them and it will be a giant #### storm.

So he won't spend $200 (probably less) for a team lunch?  Sounds like he knows he's not going to see you again.

my friends who homeschool their kids have them in a lot of group activities and schooling. not sure how it all works, but in the SF & NYC areas at least, there appears to be some sort of communal home-schooling activities.

buy yeah- home schooled kids are pretty typically socially "off" with their peers more than adults. they're used to everything being planned around them- usually not great alllowing other kids to take any kind of control... IME.
