tbh, the litany of scarves is always a pretty fun event.

we get architects, engineers, designers into a committee- come up with a theme, get parents and local stores to donate boxes and over the course of an hour one evening after school, the kids create an entire city. over the years the kids have built taller and taller, so this year we challenged them to make bridges (not so subtle social/policital double on-tardo). it's a pretty amazing affirmation that for so many kids, it's best if the parents can just stay out of their way and let them go... fantastic creativity and energy on display at every one of these, none more so than last night where the kids bridged the #### out of the joint.

I figured there would be a few people who liked Big Red because of nostalgia.

I am flummoxed that anybody can choke down ice wine.
good ice wine, sauternes and late harvest wines are amazing.  you're usually not drinking more than a few ounces at a time.  and when paired with the right food, brilliant.

i don't think i've ever seen big red, let alone tasted it.

Maybe it's just me but I just watched "Secretariat" with my son and I got choked up. But I grew up with horses, started riding age 2.  What that horse did is still to this day, unbelievable.
The movie was a little formulaic, but that horse was amazing.

Generally speaking, if your life aint built around horses, someone could bring Seattle Slew up to you, walk him away, bring another dark bay up a half hour later, tell you it's Slew and you'd go "yeah". I was around em every day for a coupla years and you could fool me most of the time.

Not so with Big Red. Had a small share in a stable that sent some mares to Claiborne Farm in the mid-80's, so i contacted one of the breeding people there when i was driving thru the area and asked if i could stop by and see Secretariat.

Lordamighty. He was 15yo (about 50 in human yrs) but ran around his paddock like he could still run through a brick wall and still wanted to. Easily 200 lbs heavier than any other thoroughbred i've seen, perfectly symmetrical (except the 3 white socks, of course), that beautifully different economy of head/neck action and the otherwordly power. I cried like a baby for the hour i watched him as i am now writing this. Most beautiful thing i've ever seen.
