So Dylan played in the talent show today (see FB) and I thought I would take the fame out to dinner. That song doesn't sound complicated but he told me it isn't an easy song to play as there are a lot of cords. I believe him.

There's a girl in the school, Jersey Haynes, keep an eye on her. She sang last year, I didn't remember her name until she started singing today.  Wow.  I think she's in the 3rd grade.

Anyhow....

Cal is sitting next to me at dinner and I tell him how I had a call with our IT guy to  sell computers and he was asking about him. Tell Cal that I told the IT guy he's hacking stuff all the time and can run circles around me. Cal corrects me and says "I don't "hack" anything dad. That's illegal. What I do is figure out "work arounds". For example at school there are firewalls everywhere to restrict you but if you know the right "work around" I can watch whatever I want".

I thought I just might have one good one. Scum. @AhrnCityPahnder he might be your kid

Self-medicating myself back to sleep isn't an option tonight - have to leave for the airport in 2 hours.

But I hear ya. I haven't had anything close to normal sleep in forever. I've never had a problem GOING to sleep; it's staying that way. I'll sleep like the dead for 3 (maybe 4 if I'm lucky) hours, then all bets are off as I start waking up. It's a crap shoot after that as to whether I'll drift back off, but I never get any amount of solid sleep after those first couple of hours.

If you find a fix for that, will you share it with the group? Mine's not that bad but it isn't good.

Thank you, HF. If I can make it for just 9 hours til I get in that car at the Cancun airport, I'll be fine.

I imagine drinking doesn't help my sleep patterns.

I think you are a great architect.  I remember when I hired you to build my house.  When I first came to the building site, it was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build my house in a swamp, but I hired you to built it all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So we built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So we built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get with El Floppo as your architect – the strongest house in the entire swamp.

Brutal. Don't think I've ever even been to one that went past noon  on a Friday.

Today I had to get up at 4:30 (Uruk's lunchtime), drag my 15 yr old  of bed, and go be "peppy" and cheer and hand out free snacks for spectators at just about ten 5 mile mark of the Flying Pig marathon. About an hour and a half in,  the spectators were all gone and we were down to the stragglers and walkers from the half marathon, so we moved the tables to the edge of the course so the participants didn't have to stray off the course to grab stuff like Skittles, chips, fruit snacks, peanuts, etc. They wiped us out so cleaning up was a breeze, except for the pile of discarded socks, hats, and shirts left behind. We bagged it all up for goodwill.

i haven't been able to sleep either GB, hope you get it right.  Drugs and booze don't even get me more than 4-5 hours.  The worst.

I've got half dozen or so meds pumping through me this weekend. Sleep and pep, not so hot. Coughing, on the other hand, like it's going out of style. For you, furls.

 
A kid at my kids' middle school killed himself. He was a 7th grader. Daughter and youngest son were friends of his, at least casually.

I don't know the family at all, but I can't stop thinking about them.

Year to date tally is two kids who were friends of at least one of mine dead by suicide and one other who died of some kind of freak burst aorta or something.

Really sorry to hear that.  My best friend died when I was 8 and I still think about it almost 40 years later.  I don't know how to advise about talking to your kids, but I am confident you will find the right words.  As someone who has been where your kids are, I do think it's important to talk and follow up about it later on.

JFC that's horrible, sorry your kids and you are going through this RL. Awful to think a 12/13 year old kid feels so despondent and didn't feel like they could have talk about it with their parents/teacher/counselor/someone. We talk about this with our kids often, if they are down or have anything that is making them feel like they have no choices - there is always a choice and that they can talk to us, their aunts/uncles, grandparents, teachers. Anyone that they can talk to will always help them regardless of the situation.
