When my first marriage was in its death throes I got that reception at Centerfolds in San Francisco. 

Looking back that is something depressing to admit and it was definitely expensive, though not brain surgery expensive. I bet my experience was more enjoyable though.

And the really good news is that neither of us got an antibiotic-resistant infection. Or not a second one anyway.

Good luck parents going through tough times.  It's never easy.  I can't sleep...taking Cooper to the doctor tomorrow for a blood draw to see if there are any abnormalities that might require further screening of his pancreas for the big C.  He's had some concerning episodes that may or may not be related to his diabetes.  It's never easy.

I just had to tell my 14 year old 8th grade daughter (who primarily lives with my charming ex-wife) that she isn't getting the year-end trip to DC & NYC with a school tour group that we talked about sending her on. I didn't actually take it away though. I told her that I am not sending her, since it was a reward she didn't earn, but if she can pay for it or somebody else can, she can have the slot. If she pays me for half of it up front, I even told her I would let her pay the rest off over time, but she needs to come up with a real plan to do so. It isn't a small amount of money.

She hasn't missed ten full days, but she has missed 95 class periods, which is the equivalent of almost 16 days. She has missed more than 1.5x what the other four kids combined have missed. 

It is clear that she (and probably her mom) have been managing her absences so that she stays under 10 full days. So far this year, she has missed 7, excluding the time she missed because of the suicide of that classmate recently. But she has missed first period 16 (!!) times. And she has missed two or more periods for medical reasons without notice 14 times.

It is just incredible to me that her mom let's her pull this stuff.

And now her mom will make me into the bad guy for "taking away" the trip, even though she hasn't missed ten full days of school. I am confident in that. It is tough to try and have consistent and realistic expectations and to enforce some measure of accountability when the other parent is an enabler. Especially given that the ex- loves to undermine anything I do.

Anyway, I had to vent. This #### isn't easy.

What do ya'll think? Did I make the right call or not?

You did the right thing IMO. HTF do you miss 95 class periods??

I used to do this. Now I quarter the avocado with the skin on, peel the skin off, and I've got quarters to break down however I want. Way easier, cleaner, and better looking than what you're doing now. Give it a try.

dunno about easier, cleaner or better looking... the method I've been using is pretty easy and clean. not sure how what you described makes an improvement...but I'll give your way a go.

 
Parenting is hard, really freaking hard if you're invested and trying to raise self sufficient productive members of society and not entitled, lazy pricks.  Thumbs up to RL for teaching his kid accountability and actions have consequences. 

GM - good luck and hopefully you get some good news.  I've spent to much time recently in doctor office with my kids and know how much it sucks. 

 
So I'm sitting here in my house waiting for a call from the AC company who came out to fix the auto shutoff switch which was not wired correctly by their company originally.  He fixed that, but somehow the compressor is not active at all so the blower is just blowing hot air through the house.  Good times.

I was dumbfounded when we moved to Seattle and about 5% of the houses we saw had central air.  The last one I bought had central air and I didn't even know it for a while because it hadn't been listed as a feature.  Never lived in a place like this.

We got it installed in our house after the first summer here. It was the summer of '06 and the house was insanely hot on and off for several months.

I was very glad to have it summer before last, when it was hot fairly regularly for several months. Even last summer it was definitely handy a few times. But it isn't essential.

I was very glad to have it summer before last, when it was hot fairly regularly for several months. Even last summer it was definitely handy a few times. But it isn't essential.

growing up in the SF Bay Area, we never had it... not even in the car. didn't know anybody who did. microclimates.

can't imagine not having it here in NYC. put it on last night (mid 80s) for the first time this year.... of course something isn't working (same issue as Osaurus- not shutting off).

We still have our heater running.  Portland sure is neat.

Buddy of mine basically didn't go to school his final semester and still graduated.  I think they had to petition based on days missed or something but he had enough credits already

once I got into college, I knew I could be absent to a certain amount of classes per class and not fail... and it was something ridiculous, like 16.

I'd bail surgically/strategically, and enjoy the beautiful spring weather with friends. What I didn't know was that the school had an automated calling system that would call your parents if you missed a class. My mom got calls every day until I graduated. gb her... didn't tell me about it until the summer- she had the whole thing memorized by sheer repetition.

other memory of that was my Chemistry teacher- who hated "senior flakes" and immediately sussed me out as his dictionary definition of one. was the only guy who knew EXACTLY when I had hit my limit... "AHA FLOPPO- YOU'RE MINE". like something out of a bad 80s movie. used to #### with me all the time- move me away from friends, sit me in the corner... all of which I found hilarious. forgot my book one day and made me go home to get it... which I did in a convertible, beautiful day... got back just as class was wrapping up (I lived in the next town over from my HS). he was a chaperone at our prom- and in spite of recognizing my blitzed out eyes, still had some nice things to say to me.... and bust my balls as well.
