GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (26 Viewers)

A guy I was good friends with in high school (and whose sister I dated) committed suicide a little over a month ago. Thanks to the dumb Facebook birthday suggestion notification a few people who were apparently not as good friends as they seem to think have posted cringe-worthy birthday wishes and sentiments like "I hope you're doing well!!!!".

Ugh. I absolutely loathe the whole Facebook birthday ritual. Let's not pretend people actually care enough to actually know someone's birthday.
Yeah, I'm with you here.  That happened to our GB Tremendous Upside a year or two after he passed.  The guy who posted didn't know and was just trying to be nice.  He felt terrible.
Shouldn't there be an expiration date on facebook pages?    Today's the birthday of a friend of mine that died 7 years ago.   His family keeps the page up.   So not only do I get the happy reminder from Facebook each year that hey, it would have been your friend's birthday today had he not suddenly dropped dead, but other people continue to post things like "happy birthday in heaven."   I'm pretty sure he would have mocked that ####.

I mentioned insomnia here because this is a general conversation thread and I didn't want to start a separate insomnia thread, although maybe a thread dedicated to that topic isn't a bad idea.  Anyway, it's been a long term problem for me. I can't remember the last time I got a halfway decent night's sleep without some kind of chemical assistance.  It's just not possible for me and sometimes it's extremely frustrating, especially when I have a busy day the next day, which is almost every weekday.  Either way, if I get 6 hours in a night it's a lot of sleep for me, and I almost never sleep for the full night without waking up for some reason.  I appreciate the advice given and will give some new things a try.

Back in the day I had lots of trouble settling my mind down to sleep. I'd think about all kinds of stuff, for hours. Very frustrating.

I learned to read books in bed, that helped many times. Other one was go to bed at same time every night. Other one was something boring sounding in the background. Final one that always works for me is I imagine playing golf starting on the first tee, I'm literally watching myself play a round of golf, I can't usually get to the 6 th hole

I tried.  Was unable to fall asleep, so they couldn't do anything.

Not kidding.
here i am picturing the poor person whose job it was to monitor your sleep study, but who has to wait for you to conk out before going home for the evening... cursing under their breath... fighting sleep.. before finally succumbing only to be awakened by you banging on the glass and staring menacingly at them while you wave a brush coffee cup.

Not sure what's going down but there are about 20 emergency vehicles surrounding an AA plane around gate K10 at O'Hare.

update: whatever it was it seems to be resolved. All the vehicles are leaving. Back to normal operations.

MD 80 had smoke in the cockpit.

Taking roverkid to Orlando to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure/Volcano Bay at the end of the month.   Pretty excited about this.

The citibike station? A few minutes from the office.

Home? 20ish min ride. 40 plus blocks. Walking would take a bit.
So how many miles from where you are standing and waiting to your house?  Would it not be faster to just start walking towards your house than wait for a bike?

No.

It's about an hour walk. I waited about 15 mins for a bike. Maybe less. Other option is subway... Or stabbing myself in the eye with a spork.

Cab to the Waldorf and get a room on the company tab. Sheesh. You're in NY right? Do it right

Actually. I'd love to open a crappy bar in my neighborhood. Anyone want to do a 90/10 venture. You provide 90% of the work, I provide 90% of the money

do you have a vacant en suite with a balcony?
We're on the 2nd floor, but have a patio out back (on the roof of the store and one of the bars downstairs). One of the bars has a patio (now called smoking deck) at street level out back. If we walk through two of our neighbors patios to get there, there's a ladder that goes down there. But as styker points out...Walking.

When floppinho was born, I'd babysit while the wife went out... Which meant taking the baby monitor to the other bar. Got some looks for it.

I would like to own a bar one day.  The kind of place that has a sign over the urinal that says “don’t eat the big, white mint”.

You should stop at a dog track or jai-alai place so the kid can win back the cost of the trip.
