My mom is dying of cancer, my relationship with my kids has reached what can safely be called estrangement (with 2 out of 3, anyway), and our damn house remodel still isn't completed.

I'm sorry about your mom.  I hope your kids come around.  I really can't imagine.  :(

glll on the house.  Next to kids, homes are pretty much the worst.

I hope everything else with 2.0 is going well.

A little and it probably took a few years off my life.  I spent all of 2015 with what felt like a hot boat anchor inside the pit of my stomach.  

My mom had to have one of those electric chair lifts installed in their house so she can get up and down the stairs.  She's literally wasting away.  Has lost a ton of weight and can't get around much anymore.  What really sucks is that her mind is incredibly lucid and sharp, so she is very depressed and hates that this is happening.  

Somebody make a poop joke.

Yeah, it hasn't been a great few months. Or a great few years.

My mom had cancer appear in another area of her lungs (a different spot from the one that was treated, apparently successfully, with radiation a few months back). As an extra-special bonus, it is now also on her spine, causing her severe back pain and nerve pain down her sciatic nerve. She ended up in the hospital over the weekend because she hadn't been eating enough and she was dehydrated. Why is getting old people to drink water (not coffee, not tea, but water) so damn hard?

The good news is that they got her eating again and re-hydrated. They also found a pain medication that helped with the nerve pain. I don't know if that is something she can get a scrip for, though.

Luckily, my mom at 73 is going strong, but the only time she visits is when she wants to rid her house of something she's tired of looking at, or taking up space she wants for something else.

Today the phone rang at about 11:00 and she asked me if I was working from home. Since I was, she of course had something to drop off.

Today's loot:

- 2 pork tenderloins: they were 2 for 1 at the store so she bought 4, but forgot she had 3 in the freezer

- spatulas: because she just bought some new ones. Figured she'd give me a chance to take what I wanted before she took them to goodwil

 
My parents do that all the time. "This stinks, we hate it, would you like it?"

Fortunate that my parents are going pretty strong at 79 and 80. They'll spend much of August in the Rockies like they normally do.

 
My parents are extra old and didn't exactly live healthy lifestyles for most of their years, so I am actually playing with house money at this point. 

Mom is 86 and smoked for close to 50 years. Dad is about to be 88 and smoked for 30 years and was a functioning alcoholic for 40 years.

On the other hand, they ate green vegetables and salad with dinner every night and worked in the yard a ton.

also sorry to hear about the house- was just thinking you'd probably been quiet getting yourselves moved in. dammit with the architects.

We are probably 4 weeks out from move-in right now. It won't be finished then, but it will be livable.

The drywall is all in, taped and skim-coating is done. They were doing some spraying of the texturing over the weekend. The old finish had a really significant texture, which we didn't like. We decided not to skim coat every wall, because of cost. But we put in a lot of new drywall, so they had to smooth some of the old stuff to match the new. And in the areas where we only replaced minimal drywall they have to texture the new stuff to match the old. 

Meanwhile, the tile contractor is working on getting prepped to lay tile, of which there is quite a lot. Then there is carpet and hard flooring that has to go in too.

We have chosen all of the interior and exterior paint colors, so now we are just waiting on the drywall stuff getting all completed and dried for paint on the interior. Exterior paining will be a later item.

As I read this, I am starting to get worried about that 4-week time table.

we had floppinha's 6th bday at the apt yesterday... gorgeous day here in NYC. 10 6yo girls, and we thought their families. the wife had set up our patio with arts and crafts for the girls, with sangria beer and snacks inside for the parents. we had 1 parent stay. we still managed to dust off the sangria and beer. 

our son's 6th birthday, most of the parents stayed to look after their hell-spawn... which was appreciated. the two kids who's parents left needed help going to the freaking bathroom.. getting their lunch plate together... buying hookers and blow... etc. these girls, otoh, were's just awesome. totally self-directed, conscientious, and easy to manage. 

tldr- girls are great, boys are dopes. also.. can you believe this little one is already 6?! [/facebook]

always amazing how quickly that all comes together, and *whammo*... paint, and moved in.

eta: we've got a project in this building far along in construction... most of the cabinets and millwork were delivered last week- can't wait to see how much has been installed at our site meeting tomorrow. construction projects are such fits and starts- seems like nothings going on for weeks/months, and then it all just falls into place.

There are many thousands of dollars of cabinetry and appliances sitting in boxes in the garage waiting to be assembled and/or installed. When I think about that process, and the potential snags, I get a little twitchy. 

And the counter people can't even measure and start fabrication until that part is done...okay, now I need to stop thinking about it.

it goes fast- those cabinet installers are magicians. and the stone will be fast. really looking forward to seeing it all go in- I hope you keep posting photos. such a huuuuuge improvement over the burgundy/lincoln-log/whatever theme was going on in there previously.

Growing up I had a half mastiff/half yellow lab.  Huge, stupid dog.   One day this woman was doing a promotion that involved a hot air balloon shaped like a chicken.   She had some sort of problem and ended up off course and flying over my neighborhood at about 75 feet above the ground, eventually crash landing up the hill from us.   The dog was traumatized for life by the giant chicken floating over the house and making loud noises as the pilot kept burning bursts of gas.   From then on, it was terrified of anything in the air or that made a shadow--planes, clouds, birds (there were a lot of loose parrots and macaws in San Diego, and they would make very loud squawking noises as they flew over).  Literally anything that was above the ground scared him, even a single sparrow.  

He got so scared that he eventually clawed/chewed the way through the wood railings of our deck and then broke the back door of the house.

Yeah, we are starting to get excited about it. For the last several months it has been nothing but a source of stress, misery and a declining bank balance.

Unfortunately, nobody has done any yard maintenance on the place for the past 9+ months. The back yard is like a jungle and the front isn't much better.

We spent a couple hours working on the front yard over the weekend (landscape work in 90+ degree temperatures is neat) and while it made a difference, the amount to do in the back is 20x bigger. 

One nice thing is that I got to tell my mom about it when I visited her in the hospital. My parents have always been uber-gardeners. They don't do as much as they used to, clearly. But their back yard is gorgeous and meticulously maintained. My mom's mood brightened considerably when I told her we were out there working on Saturday and when I told her she needs to get well enough to come over and give us advice on our yard, she was really happy.

 
the office decided just now to close next monday (july 3rd) to allow people a longer weekend.

while it would've been nice to have known this earlier so we could plan something, or afford tickets that weren't jacked up on short notice.. still nice to have the extra day off, especially tied to a long weekend.

the wife's reaction.. pissed. :loco:

just got back from 4 days away. dog was kenneled. wife picked up the dog, i picked up the kids from summer school. brought the kids home. they were who were very excited to see the dog.

dog immediately tried eating the flip flops off my 8 year old's feet.

i mean... seconds after they saw each other. right for the flip flops. not playfully. i mean attacked them. my kid was hopping around screaming while trying to get away.
