GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (8 Viewers)

I don't know how that happens, RL. If it was me, the contractor would have 2 inches less, if you know what I mean.
And I think what happened is that they changed the specs on the new wall from using 2x4s to using 2x6s. I didn't catch the implications of that change. I guess what we really need is somebody who has some experience and a full view of how all the pieces of the project fit together.

Is there a name for somebody who does that?

 Construction defect attorney

I don't use the word "masterpiece" lightly.   :tebow:
Please. If Monet copied and pasted a bunch of his previous #### into 1 new painting and then just threw a few new lilies on top, well,  nobody would really  realize that either. But that doesn't really provide much support for the point I'm making here. So I guess it's all Oktoberfest.

"client"

iirc from my "how to screw a client class" in school.

Millworker always comes and field measures, templates before fabricating. Better yet, they field measure and do shop drawings for architects approval before fabricating. But, IME at least, millworker is always responsible for dimensions.

If these were Ikea or other store bought prefabs (and I'm not knocking those- big fan for the right projects) installed by the GC... Yeah, GC and especially architect sharing the blame here.

Were these bought and delivered already?

Sucks, gb...Understandable, but should have been avoided mistake.make it clear your not paying for any of the incurred costs.

We had a design consultant who works for Ikea's Installation subcontractor come out. She did the measurements, but our GC was on site and helping.

With their collective expertise we got:

1. Our range listed as 40" when it is 48". That was the designers fault. I caught that one right away and we did some quick reconfiguration that fixed that issue.

2. A kitchen that is 2" shorter than we expected. I figured out how to remedy it, unfortunately we are going to lose a 15" wide floor to ceiling cabinet in order to correct that problem.

This whole experience has been one terrible frustration after another.

1... numbers. math. difficult.

2... damn- sucks. useful cabinet to lose. I don't know the layout, but there's no way of shrinking something else and keeping that? IIRC, ikea cabs come in 3" increments... you can't swap out one of the others for something 3" less (and then add a 1" filler... yeah, yeah... that's what my wife says... I get it).

really sorry it's not gone more smoothly. only consolation I can offer is that by this time next year, all of this will be a distant blip in your rearview as you're enjoying the house as you had hope to.

send me what you're thinking about- I've got a slow day and would genuinely like to help.

I appreciate that, but I am pretty sure that we know what we have to do.

If it were the side with just lowers, that would not be a problem. Unfortunately it is on the side that has the stove, wall oven, a few floor to ceiling cabinets and some upper cabinets. Which means that any change needs to work with all the other pieces. And a few of those pieces are pretty fixed in location. The bottom line is that it is more complicated than it sounds like at first blush. Which seems to be an overall theme of this project.

The good news is that we have it figured out. I think hope.

I'd have to see it, but yeah- that locks things in pretty tight. although there's still probably some slack to move the appliances' outlets... rangehood trickier, depending on the hood.

how are you filling the void left by the full height 15" cabinet?

again- I'd be very happy to look it over. scarily slow right now :oldunsure:

13" custom scarf/spice rack.  Two 1" fillers.

Well, not exactly as he had hoped...

So does Comedy Central plan on admitting anytime soon that Trevor Noah isn't funny? Maybe get someone new for The Daily Show?  Cause that'd be great.
