jfc... that sounds like an absolute nightmare for your BIL and nephew. completely horrifying having to hunker down in that box- I can't honestly imagine. nightmare too for the island in general. just terrible.

I know the british gov sent people/troops/help to their islands- bvi, anguilla, antigua/barbuda.

shouldn't the US be sending help to st john if this is what's going on?

they have sent some.  but they need more.  they did an initial MRE and water drop off via helicopter.  boats are starting to to take people to st croix and puerto rico but the st thomas airport won't be open until saturday at the earliest.  there are 1000's of tourists stuck, not to mention all the residents.  food water and shelter are the number one priority right now.  lawless behavior is starting to show up more and  more...my sister is deciding today whether or not to send her kids out of there, or to get them all out of there.  i've advised getting them all out of there.  i may be flying to nashville to get my niece and nephew tomorrow.

Why on Earth wouldn't they all get out? Good of you to go get the kids.  I'm sure they could use some non-crazy for a while after this experience.

   it's their home.  she's checking to see if her office can/will function.  if the kids school will re open.  and then there is the unenviable task of dealing with insurance/FEMA.  that will be easier in person.  but who knows.

I look forward to your updates on this particular point.  This certainly hasn't been my experience.

Yeah but maybe come back when they get the looting and plundering under control?

I can't believe it's only been fifteen years since The Rookie came out, and kids aren't being taught how to write a five-paragraph essay anymore.
i really  liked him in Christmas Vacation.  I'm pissed they don't make kids learn about accounting anymore either

i give up trying to figure out when old text will appear when trying to respond to a thread.

and forget about trying to delete the previous text if you had quoted someone.

so, for now and forever, @strykerpks will have posted that Carrey link
just go ahead and post it, then immediately delete. It should then have the cache cleared

welcome to the OC!!
Thanks.  Once all the dust settles Imma need to hit you for recs on eateries/bars/breweries/and that sort of thing.  The people I work with will have the "nerd" #### covered, but Im not trusting anyone who is over 30 and has likely never seen a hoo-ha to tell me where to get a real drink.

congrats on the move, 5ish.

look out for fires, earthquakes, mudslides and tsunami. plus all the people.
Of all those options, Im rooting for tsunami the hardest.  Assume itll roll in about a day after Im actually out of the red from this move.

This sounds a lot like my grandmother's/aunts experience on St Croix after Hugo. It's not easy in the slightest.  I don't say this lightly, but if they don't have a gun for the day and don't have a secure building at night, they should be very careful.  (To put it in some perspective, I believe the only time anyone in my immediate family has had a gun in their possession was then)

Making an offer on house #3.  Been on the market all of 3 days, and they're reviewing offers tomorrow afternoon.  My offer is $46k over the asking price.

So I have been spending the afternoon updating my resume and sniffing around LinkedIn.

I have been interested in finding a new job for a while. Now it is mandatory.

And no, our remodel isn't complete yet.

Well, ####.

Good luck, red. Anything promising?

And at least you'll have an amazing custom tailored house sometime. Eventually.

That is a real introductory paragraph from a real job listing. It covers a lot of squares on the corporate jargon BS Bingo card, but I am not sure it actually means anything.

My agent submitted my offer this morning.   Listing agent's response:  "That's an amazing offer.   No way they can do all cash?"

Speaking of stupid job-related crap...

Yesterday we were given an article written by this clown shoe.  http://www.oconnorgrading.com/images/Grading4Learning.png

He claims to be the "grade fixer" or "grade guru" or some other horsecrap.

Two of the things he advocates are:

No penalties for turning in late work.

No penalties for academic dishonesty.

I had to read through the article twice to make sure it wasn't from The Onion.  Our principal just wanted us to read and discuss it.  He wasn't suggesting we adopt this guy's suggestions.
