GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (8 Viewers)

That is a real introductory paragraph from a real job listing. It covers a lot of squares on the corporate jargon BS Bingo card, but I am not sure it actually means anything.

:lmao:
They want someone to manage how people and money are allocated to all the projects competing for a limited pool of people and money.  And to then explain to executives whose projects didn't get those people and resources why the ones that did are all over budget AND behind schedule.  In other words...

I believe they could have just said the position entails being yelled at by all sides all the time and been done with it.
Yeah, basically this.

Tanner>  roverkid is in 8th grade.   last year she had so much homework that she couldn't participate in extracurricular activities, and on nights when she had music lessons she had trouble finishing homework at a reasonable hour and had to either stay up late or get up early in the morning to finish it.  this year she's playing volleyball.

if the homework load is as bad as it was last year, is it unreasonable for me to just tell her to stop doing it once she hits her regular bedtime and email the teachers that I told her not to finish?  this isn't a matter of procrastination.  she works very hard and is a straight-A student.   she mainly struggles with math and the assignments take her quite a while to complete, but all of the teachers seem to be giving 30 minutes to an hour each.

I wouldn't think it is unreasonable.

If all of her core subject teachers are assigning 30 minutes every night...that's way too much.  You can tell them I said so.   And mention that I was on Jeopardy.

6th grade here.  my kid's teachers said after 60 total minutes of home work,  stop.  some said 45 minutes.  30/60 minutes each would be hours of homework.  unpossible.

Homework in general seems way out of whack these days.  We got my first graders HW assignment and general expectations thing yesterday from his teacher which outline 30-45 minutes a night of math, learning words, journal writing, and reading.  Trying to get a 5 year old boy to sit still for 30 minutes at 6:15 at night is not fun.

fwiw.... and I think it was in the local papers... our school eliminated homework entirely until 5th grade. 30 minutes required reading a night, plus "jotting". also have occasional projects and something called "HOP".

PS Floppo values family choice and flexibility when considering homework and student time spent outside of school. Teachers will provide families with optional activities for continued learning and practice at home. Research shows a direct correlation between time spent reading and academic development. Therefore, we encourage students to engage in daily reading at home. Additionally some assignments will be sent home throughout the year to help maximize student learning time in the classroom. We understand the expectation for our students in middle school, therefore our 5th grade homework policy will be adjusted to prepare our students for middle school.
FAQs

FAQS

What is our homework philosophy?

PS 11 values family choice and flexibility when considering homework and student time spent outside of school, we believe in P.D.F.(playtime, downtime, & family time).

Though we have eliminated traditional homework, teachers will provide families with optional activities for continued learning and practice at home through our Home-based Optional Practice (H.O.P). Please note, some assignments will be sent home throughout the year to help maximize student learning time in the classroom.

In addition, research shows a direct correlation between time spent reading and academic development. Therefore, we encourage students to engage in daily reading at home. We also understand the expectation for our students in middle school, therefore our 5th grade homework policy will be adjusted to prepare our students for middle school.

Why are we changing our homework philosophy?

Over the course of the year, the SLT team has spent a tremendous amount of time studying researchabout elementary school children and how homework affects their academic progress. While reading research can be tricky, the overall research does not point to a direct correlation between time spent doing homework and academic success in elementary school years. There is a correlation found between time spent reading and academic development. With this information, we have committed to doing what the research claims is best for our students. What is P.D.F?

P.D.F. is an acronym that stands for playtime, downtime, and family time. Research that focused on “protective factors for kids – those things every kid needs in order to thrive physically, mentally, and academically was boiled down into three main categories for well-being (P.D.F).

What is H.O.P.?

H.O.P. is an acronym that stands for Home-based Optional Practice. Our teachers have begun to collect and design home-based activities that students can do with their families or independently. These activities are closely aligned with each content area‚ units of study. They are rich, rigorous and fun. It is the same as doing homework except it will be a family‚choice as to whether their child will take the time to do them. The work will not be checked or facilitated by the classroom teacher. Students and their families can choose to do as much work at home as they see fit.

When is H.O.P. being implemented?

The plan is to have H.O.P. fully implemented in the 2016-17 school year. Fourth graders will be introduced to H.O.P mid-May 2016 followed by other grades. This is new and very exciting work, and we know there will be kinks to work out as it initially launches.

How will I know what my child is doing in class?

It is important for us to keep parents informed and we are planning for different ways to achieve this. First, PS11 Showme, a collection of video tutorials that cover strategies that are taught in the classroom, will be better aligned for each unit by grade. Also, class newsletters are being revamped to be another tool to keep you informed. In addition to the portfolio, more classwork will be sent home during the units for students to share with their parents. Lastly, the H.O.P work will be organized by unit and by grade that will continue to give you insight as to what is happening in the classroom. As we start this program, we will be evaluating best practices to make sure parents stay well-informed.

Will my child‚ teacher suggest H.O.P work specifically to help if my child is struggling with something?

As always, if a child is struggling in a particular area, the teacher will provide needed support. If appropriate, this might include specific H.O.P work.

The only way I know what they are doing in Math is through homework, how will I know what is going on in math?

First, PS11 Showme, a collection of video tutorials that cover strategies that are taught in the classroom, will be aligned for each math unit by grade. In addition, more classwork and assessments will be sent home during the units for students to share with their parents. As H.O.P rolls out, we will continue to determine best practices to keep parents informed.

How do we ensure students keep up with Math fluency and multiple strategies they learn in the classroom?

Students will receive the academic learning they need during classwork. For each math unit, there will be home-based activities available that students can do independently or with their families for extra practice. The Show Me videos will also provide additional support if you want to review the math strategies at home. As always, if a student is struggling, teachers will identify a specific plan for that student.

Will H.O.P work be checked?

This work is optional and will not be checked or facilitated by the classroom teacher. Families are encouraged to go over work with their kids.

Will my child receive homework during State Test ELA/Math Prep unit?

As mentioned in our philosophy, some assignments will be sent home throughout the year to help maximize student learning in the classroom. If teachers find it necessary, they will send home test prep work to be done at home to support classwork.

Will my child have summer homework and project?

Students will have time to plan a summer project at the end of the year and they will have time to share their projects it in the beginning of the new school year. This work will be optional. We will also encourage students to keep reading during the summer.

Will enrichment activities be reduced at school to finish anything that used to be done as homework?

Enrichment activities are important to the development of our students and will not be affected with our revised homework philosophy. As mentioned, some assignments may be sent home throughout the year, such as publishing, to help maximize learning during the school day.

If reading is still going to be assigned, will my child still do reading responses and jotting at home?

Daily reading will still be required at home. We are going to provide students different ways of collect their thoughts (including jotting) that will be needed when doing extensive reading responses in the classroom.

How will families without internet access or printers access H.O.P. work?

We will work with students and families on an individual basis to ensure that all families
have the support they need. Not all the H.O.P work will require internet access.

Will 5th Graders still get planners to help them stay organized and learn good homework routines for Middle School?

5th graders will continue to to get planners to learn how to stay organized. We understand the expectation for our students in middle school, therefore our 5th grade will continue to receive homework. This homework will be monitored and checked by teachers.

Will there still be a home folder that needs to be checked every day?

Yes. Home folders are an important communication tool between teachers and parents. Also, some assignments may be sent home throughout the year, which will be in the home folder.

Will there still be SHOW ME tutorial videos available on the website?

Yes. Show me videos will be housed this website as well as on our Youtube Channel! Subscribe to be notified when we release new content.

The school my kid goes to has always had a rule of thumb of 10 minutes of homework a night times whatever grade you're in.   So 4th grade, 40 minutes, 8th grade, 80 minutes, etc.  This has always seemed reasonable to me.

Problem is there is no coordination and it seems like every teacher thinks it's ok to assign homework nearly every night, and any time that multiple teachers assign 30 minutes or more, we're looking at a long night.

Yeah...our principal has Anderson envy and really needs G&T kids to prop up the school's test scores until her new better zone kicks in (they rezoned the entire UWS and PS166 was a big "winner"). I don't think anyone is particularly happy with her, but this is life on the UWS where there are 4 or 5 good elementaries all trying to feed into 1 real good middle school.  Of course this is free, so I should be happy I'm not shelling out 50K a year.

Other issue for us is that roverkid is in advanced classes and I only have her half of all school nights.   Her mom isn't very strong at math.   When she's with her mom and has to get help, I not only have to learn how her teacher wants to do the problems (they aren't ridiculous, but her teacher only wants the problems done the way he teaches them to do them--a lot of times I was taught a different -- and almost always faster--way) but have to work through them with her over facetime or something.

the state test is just awful. and I think every school has anderson envy.

our school spends 2 weeks doing prep- mostly getting the kids clear on what the rubric is for scoring and strategies/approaches for dialing in how to get the 3 or 4. it's 2 weeks that I'd prefer they spend on other stuff, but that's the life in the city. There are certainly other schools that do nothing and push for their kids to opt out (a bunch of D1 schools) and others that spend most of their time prepping (success academies)... so I guess ours tries to find some balance, which I appreciate.

meanwhile, a bunch of parents are still up in arms about the loss of homework (some of the chinese, korean and japanese families have switched schools) and what that mean for lil' skippy's chances at getting into harvard. :loco:

we're at day 1 of middle school applications- school had a 5th grade family meeting about it this morning. and apparently, all of the allotted school tour times and dates are completely filled up. the wife has me F5ing the last one's website for when they come on line... (any minute!). can't believe we have to go through this idiotic process for middle school just so we get to do it all over again and worse for HS.

and the "funny" thing about the HOP stuff (optional homework)... I fully expected all the type1 tiger moms at this place to be all over it and pushing for more. no. everybody we've talked to avoids it because it requires a bunch of time and energy on their part to sort through it and then review it.

If it were the design world, that would be followed up by" 1-2 years experience needed".

Code for.... We need a serious senior person who will work for free.
Preach. I think i  mentioned to you on here that during my job search one of my interviewers flat-out told me they wanted an art director who was willing to work for production artist pay.

That sucks, Red.  Give 'em hell.

Love the fact that Tanner was on Ben Stein. Outside of living well past 100, it's probably the one thing I envy the most about him. WBSM was easily top of the list when it came to game shows I would have wanted to be on. Close second, Remote Control

Remote Control was just #2 on my personal list when it comes to game shows I would have wanted to be on. To my knowledge Tanner was never on it.

Don't worry about it. The world needs ditch diggers, too

Speaking of stupid job-related crap...

Yesterday we were given an article written by this clown shoe.  http://www.oconnorgrading.com/images/Grading4Learning.png

He claims to be the "grade fixer" or "grade guru" or some other horsecrap.

Two of the things he advocates are:

No penalties for turning in late work.

No penalties for academic dishonesty.

I had to read through the article twice to make sure it wasn't from The Onion.  Our principal just wanted us to read and discuss it.  He wasn't suggesting we adopt this guy's suggestions.
Did the discussion revolve around how dumb it was and how it was a total waste of time?

At the moment...nothing.

That was an easy joke, but clearly non-responsive.

I have been in the capital markets/investment business for most of the past 20 years. Over the last 4-5 years it has been with a small start-up company that sells proprietary data to money managers, mostly hedge funds. There are four full-time employees, including our founder, who is a world-class back of #####. We also employ a couple of contract consultants. I was the first real full-time employee.

We have been hemorrhaging clients for the past 12-18 months and have seen our revenues drop by about two thirds in that time. This was after growing them nearly 15x from the time I joined to a couple of years later. The client losses are due to a combination of really tough conditions in the industry we sell into and the fact that the founder has a tendency to make all kinds of outlandish claims and promises to get the initial sale. Great strategy.

The good news is that my boss from almost 20 years ago (who was a true mentor to me) is interested in starting up something with me. I have a clearly defined strategy and with his help I feel pretty confident it will be really successful. The bad news is that it requires coming to an agreement with the aforementioned bag of ##### to take some of the intellectual property I was involved in developing with me. We want to craft an agreement that is a win-win for everybody and without me the bag of ##### has literally zero chance of making it into something really worthwhile. But he is a paranoid ####### who doesn't recognize that win-win agreements exist. So we'll see.

Your boss sounds neat.

What are the odds you could convince him to license the technology to this new company exclusively as a new revenue stream during this downturn and stay off the Secretary of State books as a 50/50 owner while he pays you 50% of your most recent salary to try to make the licensing deal lucrative for your old company?

That is, can you pitch it not as some sharing of intellectual property but as some pathetic desperate attempt to save your old job at a massive discount to him in the short run that actually makes you a #### ton of money?

There are an almost infinite number of ways we could structure a fair deal that works for everybody, but this guy is a delusional narcissist who is achingly insecure underneath an outer shell of pure egotism. (sound like anybody who is in the news a bunch lately?)

That's the good news.

The bad news is that he is an absolute pie in the sky thinker, so any deal that is presented to him will be evaluated in comparison with the perfect deal that is surely just over the horizon.

I was explaining this to my old boss and prospective financial backer. I told him I wanted the guy nowhere near this new venture. My old boss said "I have a lot of experience with massaging the egos of useless people and giving them concessions that aren't worth much, only to marginalize them later", or words to that effect. :lmao:

And I know that he does.

update on my sister and her exodus from the devastation that is st john, USVI.  i still haven't had an actual phone conversation with her.  but!  she decided to get the #### out of dodge.!! very happy about this!  she sent a text today as they were going through customs in PR(we had no clue she had decided to take a boat from st john to puerto rico) and then 2 follow up pics of her and her kids in what looks like a luxury hotel, ripping into some room service. :)   i'm sure to talk with her tomorrow, but am so happy that she got out of there! :pickle:

i'm sure her first hand report will be fascinating

Good luck with this, red. Sounds like this could ultimately be a much better spot for you, especially if you can get as far as possible from this last guy.

Great news. Any idea where she's headed?

Thank goodness.  Your sister on St. John was the first thought I had reading this:

http://www.theonion.com/article/mother-feels-violent-desire-to-make-front-doorway--33856

LANSING, IA—Describing it as “a raging desire over which [she] has absolutely no physical or psychological control,” local mother Sandra Bedo told reporters today that she regularly experiences an intense, violent compulsion to festoon her home’s front doorway in decorations that reflect the visual traditions of the current season.“### #### it, I need dry corn stalks now—where are the dry corn stalks?” the 46-year-old mother of three said with a pinecone between her teeth, frantically stringing miniature gourds along twine for a harvest garland. “October is almost here and I need a ####### cornucopia of berries and Indian corn to go at the base of the door next to the pumpkin cluster with the paper cutout of the scarecrow that will look darling leaning against the foliage wreath. Son of a #####, this feels good! I feel alive!” At press time, Bedo—who claimed to be “propelled by a force far larger and more powerful” than herself—was physically shaking as she purchased a doormat with a cartoon pilgrim on it at a local craft store.

that was my biggest fear for her.  the ritz carlton in san juan is much safer place.
how long is she there? is she coming back to the mainland for a bit until things get under control there?

cripes. I can't imagine what she's going/gone through... and I've been through a homeless-causing building fire and Sandy.
