Sounds like a great idea.  Good time to blow off a little steam.  Like a college kid on spring break, just with a wife and all. 

 
I once went to Vegas one week after being laid off. In the Great Recession. With three trips already under my belt that year.

sort of.   the whole process has made me hate people even more than I used to.

I get keys tomorrow.  some furniture getting delivered saturday.  main move happening monday.   more furniture being delivered on the 12th, but I apparently won't have bedroom furniture until...someday.   

planning on having people that don't have thanksgiving plans over for food, drinks and football.  all are invited, except astros fans.

I'm not unemployed yet, but it could happen any day with the way things are going around here. We just got the dreaded pep talk from the corporate folks yesterday that "all the major changes have already happened"  :rolleyes:  That's the 3rd one in the last 19 months I've heard that speech.

So, right after that meeting, I turned around and booked a week in Mexico for December. #### it.

My youngest is 12.  Doesn't have a phone (although we do have an 'emergency' phone that we allow her to take for after school activities or when she goes to friends houses, etc...)

Pro tip - if she wants an instagram account, is responsible, gets good grades, not in trouble, it's an easy passive reward to allow (and take away if things go sour).  

Pro tip 2 - children, in particular younger children will post more of what's on their minds on a social site such as instagram then they will share with their parents (usually).  Have your wife (or you, or even better an older, trusted sibling) get an account and follow her so you can see what's on their minds.

Pro tip 3 - until of course, they get pissed off, create another account, don't tell you about it and then really start posting some stupid crap :kicksrock:

Not that I'd know from experience or anything.......

 
My thought is that social media is bad for kids. It sets up a permanent record, opens kids up to trolling and otherwise negative behavior and doesn't help build actual real life social skills like how to talk to people. I've told my kids if you need to communicate with your friends call them or face time. Worst case text them.  But I'm open to the possibility that I'm being overly protective.

If I allowed by 12 year old to have an account, I wouldn't just follow them, I would absolutely 100% require them to give me their login info and I would login to their account periodically so that I could track DMs as well.

And yeah, I would imagine that a 2nd hidden account, or finding other devices to login on, would be a potential issue. But if that arose, punishment would start with loss of the first account and some pretty draconian tech bans for awhile.

ETA: I also wouldn't allow my 12 year old to have social media accounts in the first place. But I'm also a curmudgeon that believes that kids actually need healthy boundaries that we as a society have started to ignore.

my daughter just turned 12.  We just got her a free phone (it is a smart phone) now that there is no more after care and she buses home from school/practice/games.

She is allowed to text.   THats it so far

 
fwiw... we looked into one of those watches that allows the kid to call or text up to 5 pre-programmed numbers. decided to wait on it until floppinho goes to middle school next year. he thinks he's getting a pixel2.

one of our neighbor kids has a watch phone. pre-programmed only for her parents. pretty handy. saves her running half a block home to ask "can i stay at the furley's?"

she just taps her watch and it buzzes her mom

that was the idea... although our kids still aren't ever out of our apartment without a parent or sitter.

but when he's in middle school next year and commuting on his own (eventually, if I win out over his mom), this kind of thing would be very useful. smartphone would be too, but I'm sure too much time would get wasted on it to be overall useful.

right there with you.  she has an iPad and texts friends from it and she knows that i can and will read anything on it, whenever i want to.  there are all sorts of apps that kids use, musically for example, that seem horrible to my geezer ###, but the future is here.  i gained major cred with her and her friends last year when i took her to vidcon.  thank god the tickets were free from work.  $350 each :eek:   all the "stars" from the internet, you tube, musically, etc  were there.  none from red tube though...

agree here as well.  all the social media status stuff is the worst.  finding your self worth through likes and views is a pretty sorry way to live.

I have mentioned before that I used to help out with my church's youth group. One time I was driving a group of students to an event and there were a bunch of 8th-9th grade girls towards the front of the van. Their entire conversation revolved around Instagram. How many likes their top picture had, who had the most total likes, what kind of pictures got more likes, what kind of poses got more likes, etc. They talked about it as if likes were currency. And socially, that's exactly what they were. It simultaneously blew my mind and made me sad. 

The pressure to be a part of it to fit in, the hurt that you could see on the girls who were on the lower side of things, the desperation for approval from whoever would give it...it all hurt my heart to see.

good info here, but  :(

mine are 10 & 6 and I can only imagine what kind of nonsense we'll be trying to keep them out of or safe from. hoping that we've instilled in them enough conviction in themselves to ride all of that out or pass it by... but yeesh. not looking forward to that.

Right. The little one is my prime suspect, he has a fort in the woods.  Of course there are all kind of little jack offs around all the time and it was right by the edge of the garage door.

Happy ending though.  Remembered I had a jigsaw and was so much easier. :thumbup:

The key is to always eat the cole slaw from any diner you visit.  You never know how old it is, or whether it was recycled from someone who didn't eat theirs.  It builds your immunity.
