wife's birthday was saturday. we did an Escape Room, dinner & drinks.

my wife was angry all night long. she didn't like "being surprised".  her friend had to remind her that she got exactly what she had been asking for, and talking about all summer.... so stop being a baby and enjoy life for once.

Sounds like a really awful practice guaranteed to breed mistrust and crush morale. I've never heard of a company doing this.
