I like "Valley Girl", it just doesn't represent his work that well.  It's like people thinking of "Bang On The Drum" for Todd.
don't know who "Todd" is but this song is burned in to my mind forever for two reasons

1) when i was in elementary school, delivering newspapers in the morning, the radio guys played a snippet of this every. single. day. so i heard the same 15-20 seconds well over 1 thousand times.

2) the Packers STILL play a snippet of it at games, or you'll hear it pre-game on the radio, or in the lot, or at a bar, etc.

:wall:

We were on a party line when I was a yute.

Two short rings together meant the call was for us as I recall.
We had a party line but separate numbers; everyone's phone rang separately for incoming calls.  But only one house could have an active call at a time, and if you picked up you could hear the neighbors' conversation.

Pretty sure this is how it worked at my house, too.

There was a lot of elderly-Christian-lady drama due to this when I was a kid who didn't understand.

if you're talking "valley girl", during its my local mainstream "alt" radio station used to play it constantly. I called in a request for them NOT to play it over the next hour. they laughed, but still played it. ####ers.

todd equals ... dammit- went google famous todds and wow is that name lacking fame. other than rundgren.

and I'll be honest- the little I heard of zappa and rundgren (outside of the kitsch) never made me want to listen to more. just not my scene. but it's been a long while since I've tried- so I'm open to fans giving me a couple of things to try.

Have ever told the story here about my roommate and I calling up one of our local “hits” radio stations due to their crappy rotation?

Actually, I’m sure I have but I’m going to tell it again after another drink.

full array available for Todd Rundgren.  It goes from late 60s pop psychelica, to piano ballads to hard rock, to early prog, to whatever man.  This is where it starts, but if you don't like that ...there's more - almost 50 years worth.

Open My Eyes - Nazz (very Who influenced)

We Gotta Get You A Woman - just Todd

Don't like that?  It's all different ...over many, many years.

So circus 1987 my roommate, Jim, and I were doing something in our apartment like painting or putting together a bookshelf or rewiring one of his guitar amps.

Our stereo was tuned to some local “today’s hits!” station.  I think we were just too lazy to get up and change the station and/or put in a CD.

Now keep in mind our local radio stations sucked (still do).  Period.  Didn’t matter if it was pop or rock or country or easy listening...there was no “cutting edge” station like KROQ.

Suddenly, Jim says “GD IT!” And jumps up and grabs the phone.

Now I wasn’t really paying much attention to the radio.  It was just background noise. But not for Jim.

Oh, and Jim was/is a very soft spoken guy.  I mean he comes off as a mellow dude but will cut you deep if he wants to.

So he calls KSUK or whatever.  The DJ answers.

Jim: Oh hey..sorry to bug you but I need to know something.

DJ: Uh, ok, sure.

Jim: So did Huey Lewis die today?

DJ: What?  No. I mean lemme check the wire....no. No he didn’t.  Why are you asking?

Jim: Because you’ve played like 3 Huey Lewis songs in the last 45 minutes.  I just thought it was a tribute or something.

DJ: Ha ha ha. Very funny.  I have a set playlist.  Don’t give me crap and tie up the request line.

30 minutes later Jim picks up the phone again

DJ: KSUK request line. What’s going on?

Jim: Hey, did Madonna die or something?  Because you’ve played like 3 of her songs in the last..

DJ:  DUDE!  STOP CALLING ME!  STOP FING WITH ME!  I HAVE TO PLAY THIS #### OR I WILL GET FIRED.  I HATE MADONNA. I HATE HUEY LEWIS. I HATE JANET JACKSON. GET A LIFE AND STOP FING WITH ME! (click)

Just my 2 cents but Zappa is a musical genius.

But I don’t really like his stuff.
Completely understandable take.  I got into a handful of his "goofy" albums (Apostrophe', Sheik, Joe's Garage) as much for the clever lyrics as for the music.  Some of the instrumental stuff really shows his guitar chops, but doesn't hold my interest as well.

In the early days of XM Radio, my GB had one of those mobile "boom box" type units. Circus 2008 we were ice fishing in Eagle River. We had one of the classic rock stations going and had heard Phil Collins (solo, Genesis) like 5 times within an hour. Aside, I don't really fish. I just go to drink and smoke and go to the tata bar (RIP Weasel's, and now RIP Carrie Wylde's Frontier). At any rate, I called up XM Radio and said "That's enough Phil Collins"

"Excuse me sir?"

"You guys have played Invisible Touch, Land of Confusion, In the duh-duh duh-duh duh-duh dum-dum Air Tonight, and Su-Su-effing-Sudio since 1:30 on whatever station"

"Oh dear. Do you not like Phil Collins? We always strive to have a diverse playlist to satisfy all our customers"

"I have nothing against Phil Collins. But that's enough Phil Collins"

*click*

We didn't hear any Phil Collins the rest of the day. I like to think my call was recorded and is used for training new employees on how to deal with drunk people.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds.  But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

corporate: "we really need to understand how to make this company work better. what's working well for our employees? what do they like? dislike? how can we engage them better?"

employees: "you could ask us"

corporate: "nah, we'll hire some consultants to tell us what you actually think"

employees: "but..."

corporate: "you don't really know anything about anything anyways"

employees: "yeah.. but..."

corporate: "CONSULTANTS"

OK

Speaking of circa, was Up North with some friends and we were all bar hopping and browsing the little shops.  One had a bunch of old photographs and were captioned DISHEVELED CHILD circa 1897, MACKINAC CITY circa 1957, JEBS FISH MARKET 1976, etc when all of a sudden my buddy blurts out Jesus Christ this Circa guy that took all these pictures must be a hundred years old

???  Not sure I follow that statement

Land of Confusion seems even more relevant today than when it came out.
speaking of huey lewis, I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
