no guilt my friend.  it's not selfish to feel that way.  quite the opposite.  you wanted something very simple, a pain free existence, for someone you loved.

Nonnono!!! You're the best kind of hero, my friend. You've stayed on task against pain, fear, confusion & the whole ball o' wax to give your folks a soft landing. I honor you for humanity in performance of these thankless tasks and share your sense of loss and relief. Condolences -

Page 2 save, and hope it's not too soon to return to the usual absurdity in here.

One of my dachshunds was late coming back in from his morning business today.  When I called for him, he came trotting up to the back door with the back ~40% of a squirrel in his mouth. :X

I made him drop it before I let him in, but unfortunately this was about 10 minutes after the weekly trash pickup had gone by the house.  I didn't feel like figuring out the disposal at 6AM, so it'll be there waiting for me (and him!) when I get home.  At this point I'll be happy if the other 60% hasn't been barfed up on the kitchen tile.

I realize these dogs are bred to go after critters, but a) he's about 12 years old and a bit fat; and 2) they're bred to dig into holes, not get squirrels off of trees.  IDK if the squirrel lost its grip and fell right into his mouth, or what.

 
Meanwhile, HeckWife has been in Florida for a week visiting the kids @ college and attending a conference.  She's flying back this afternoon.  Got delayed boarding because another passenger got angry about not being able to board with his beer (just chug it, Nancy!), and then further delayed while the ground safety crew determines whether said passenger is going to cause problems on the flight.

meanwhile, i'm pretty sure we saw a bobcat on the morning walk the other day.  my dog is oblivious. walked within a few feet of the thing and paid it no mind. 

i'm calling the thing back to me and she just kept on trotting. was fully prepared to run for my life and let the dog fend for itself but neither of the animals seemed to care about the other at all.

Rough week for GMTAN dads.  

Here's one for you.  My dad was hospitalized with a blood infection on Friday.  Unsure what the culprit was, but he's got a compromised immune system, so his body is very fragile and prone to illness and infection.  Took a while to find the right antibiotic to pump into his bloodstream (first one caused an allergic reaction) but it finally got knocked out yesterday.  Ultimately, the docs/nurses traced the infection back to an early morning wake-up from his mini-Australian shepherd who thought it would be a sweet gesture to lick my dad in the eyes to get him up and moving.  Yada yada yada, guess who has a dog now.  :hot:

A dog that has done nothing but aggressively hump our twins, bolt out of the house whenever the door is open and bark uncontrollably the last 24 hours.  So, this is fun.  This is fine.

They’re very high energy smart dogs.  But they take to training well and love to learn tricks.

Your best bet is to take the dog for training and involve the kids in the process. The more you can encourage your kids to play with the dog a bunch, the happier everyone will be.

Can they learn how to do tricks that earn money?  Because right now, that's the greatest trick I could use.

 
Gl with the dog and dad, gm. Australian sheps are great- loyal, smart and fun. Like twins.

Speaking of dads, my folks were interviewed by the BBC around 1970 for some piece on our hometown and race in the schools- was never shown in the US. My brother somehow found the video recently and I just watched it. Absolutely gobstruck seeing my dad as guy 15 years younger than I am now...I was only little then, and dont have memories of him at that age outside of photos. And haven't seen video of him ever from then, or much at all recently....he died in 06' before we all had smart phones that videoed everything. Shows the four of us on our little sail boat (as opposition to our poor black neighbors) before the interview...and crazy that even that guy still pushes my buttons, and that my mom did her thing of talking with a British accent any time she's around somebody British. Buttons pushed, but dammit I miss him.

What's the going rate for a gift amount for a cousin's wedding?  It's my baby cousin (at 30, the baby) with whom I have little in common but whom I absolutely adore.  And yes, I'm also flying across the damn country to a cold-weather locale the day after Christmas for this.   :hot:   It's a modified "you go to the funeral"; you go to the wedding.

Nevermind, I got impatient and went ahead and spent all my money on gifts for them.  I love my baby cousin.

On a separate front, a little good news, which we can all use:  the other night I came out of dinner and found someone had crushed in my back bumper while I was parked.  The good news is that she left a note!  With her real name and phone number!

She's a middle school teacher, and he's an...I'm not sure, something part-time.  They are in their 30s and both virgins.  I don't think there's a lot of $$ involved here.

(I realize their being virgins isn't relevant to their wealth, but I just wanted to get that in there.)

Our VP complied to my boss that my beard was too long and if I was wearing a sweater I need to make sure I don’t have any exposed chest hair so i told him I was coming to work dressed like Gardner Minshew tomorrow
