GM's thread about nothing (30 Viewers)

I have a bunch of stew meat to use from the 1/4 cow I bought so I made some Guiness inspired beef stew last night. Pretty delicious.

Also, to my secret santa, open your package early, you're going to get a bunch of stew meat this year. Not to be confused with Stu meat.

the food scene in Portland is ridiculously awesome

weird to only have one pro team there. 2 if you count MLS.

Winterhawks games are great though. That's pretty good hockey.

Yeah, that's probably a better place to live. Better weather, closer to the ocean, better beers, tremendous wine country, low crime, lots of access to ski slopes, waterfalls and river rafting. JUST KIDDING!
:lmao: Luring K4 here would be like Reggie White coming to Green Bay. She would help change the perception and show the world the awesomeness that is Milwaukee as a destination for GMTAN free agents

Ok even I can't say that with a straight face

I finally got around to unboxing most of my stuff from my office and started setting up my home office. I pulled out SLB's autographed photo in his cat shirt and started laughing. I can't believe nobody ever asked why I had that on my bookshelf.

Yeah I hear you. St. Louis has a lot of great things going for it. Problem is there is a certain segment that likes to get killy. Thanks East St. Louis (Illinois)!!!!

Would love to hear where you guys ate while you were here.Sucks only having one pro team, but college football is tremendous out here. I'd rather have a program like Oregon to support than, say, the Raiders. I gave the MLS a chance. It's not for me. The games are okay, but I just can't support a sport that ends in 0-0 ties and the guys in the MLS are not the world's best. When I watch the NBA, that's the top talent in the world. MLS is a lower quality product compared to what is played in Europe. Nuts to that.Winterhawks games are great, and I'm not even a hockey fan. I used to be when I followed the Stars, but I just don't have room in my sports cupboard for NHL anymore. But the games are fun to take my sons too and Portland has been pretty good over the years. Some great players have come through this system.

Oregon football program is funded like a pro team.
that's not really Portland though.
Well...no, it's not. But, it's a 90 minute drive to the stadium from here and most of the season ticket holders hail from the Portland area. So, if you have tickets, getting down there for a day is a blast. Eugene is a really cool city and the college campus is, IMO, very pretty. Tailgating is outstanding, but so is hitting the on campus bars and ogling at the hot coeds. And now that I take my sons with me, it's become a great bonding experience/exercise and one I hope to continue on with my daughter and then one day my grandkids. Course, it's also fun to get down there and just let loose with buddies too. So long as you have a hotel room. The drive back at night sucks and I quit doing it. If I can't get a room, I will sell my tickets. In fact, I make enough selling them to cover the bulk of my season ticket price. One more thing: Cost of my 2012 season tickets (for two tickets) on the 5th row of the endzone - $1,000. That's 7 home games. How much does it cost 2 people to go to a Seattle game or a Bears game with comparable seats? Just one game will come pretty close to that price alone, especially if you add in booze, etc.

Holt #### those were good. Pok Pok was a bit of a disappointment but still very good. Podnah's brunch was phenomenal too.The most frustrating part was reading reviews of food carts online and then not being able to find them anywhere because they had apparently closed or been moved recently. But, there are so many good food options there, and the prices are so cheap on almost everything, that it was kind of hard to believe at times.

Is it fun watching them blow out a new team each week? I have no idea what that would be like.In general, I prefer watching football on tv to going in person.

It was fun for a while, but it bores me to watch them beat up on crap teams. But even in watching the Stanford loss, it was a thrilling game I'll never forget and well worth the season ticket cost. Especially since I got to see it with my son. Good memory, win or lose. And again, it's a whole day down in a college town. I love that. I'd rather do that than sit in a stadium parking lot. I like watching NFL on TV. Best TV sport out there. I haven't gone to an NFL game since 1997. I doubt I'll ever go again. Too expensive and way too full of idiots. But college football live? Can't beat it, imo.

Damn, you got to some great spots. Pok Pok is always very crowded and so I've only been there once, but it was incredible when I went. I also think it's gotten a little too big for its britches. The owner has opened up a bunch of other spots including one in NYC. I think it's hurt his original locale. Kenny and Zukes is awesome. Podhahs is great. You really did well!Yeah, the food cart scene is one that lends itself perfectly to the world of Twitter. Ardent food cart enthusiasts and owners turn to Twitter to keep current on where they are, what they are serving, etc. I wish I still worked downtown. I left in 2008, just when everything was about to explode. Would love to be down there still as my boss paid for every single lunch every day. :kicksrock:

I'd love to see more of these games, but don't have a big rooting interest so that kind of lessens the appeal for me I think. Tickets aren't usually that cheap either, and they don't serve beer. Still looks like a lot of fun if you really love your school's team.

Having closely followed some really strong Connecticut teams, no, it never gets old. Beats the alternative.

I didn't go to Oregon. :bag:My point is it is LESS money to see college football than it is to see NFL. Hell, it is LESS money to see college football than it is the NBA and as much as I enjoy going to Blazer Games, I'd rather watch college football any day of the week. As far as beer goes...bring a flask! There's also a beer garden 5 minutes from my seats with TVs of the game. I'm a big fan of drinking too, but it hasn't stopped me from enjoying the games one bit. In the blowouts, I'll often watch a lot of the game from the beer garden where I can watch other games going on too.

well, I'm sure you get a great deal with season tickets and obviously as a season ticket holder, you've grown to love the Ducks.I'm not planning to buy season tickets for any team anytime soon. Can anyone get those? With such a small stadium and such a good team, I imagine they'd be hard to come by.

I guess I don't understand the point of driving 90 minutes, paying for a ticket, and booking a hotel room just to watch other games in a sports bar.
1) I've paid for the tickets already. If you don't understand the point of buying season tickets, then you can skip the rest of the points.2) 90 minutes is not THAT cumbersome. I like driving and if you are with your son or a friend who is from out of town, it's a road trip and a chance to catch up. I like road trips. And I know people who have 90 minute round trip commutes to work every day. 3) I like getting a hotel room so I don't have to drive 90 minutes back and with the traffic, it's much longer with more aggravation. A hotel room means not worrying about the drive back. If you're with buddies, you can drink and not worry about a driver. That's a safe alternative and worth the cost alone. With my son this week, it was a treat for him to have a hotel room with an indoor pool and room service. It was his birthday gift and he loved it. I only went to two games this year. I had a hotel room both times. Well worth the cost. 4) The beer garden is next to the stadium. It's not a sports bar, but it's got all the games on if you want to watch those. Nobody says you have to stay there, but if you want a cold beer, that's where you'll have to drink it. Many people sneak beers and flasks into the game. I've never seen anybody get busted. I've never seen a fan bemoan the fact that they can't drink a legal beer while watching the game in the stands.5) Even in blowouts, I enjoy myself. I'm parked right next to the visiting team cheerleaders, the excitement level is off the charts and it's great football even if it's a blowout. If you can't enjoy that, then I don't know what to tell you.Come to a game with me. If you don't have a good time, I'll wear a hat backwards for a full month.

Very hard to get and very expensive now because if you buy them, they force you to pay a 'donation'. I bought these in 2000. I'm grandfathered in, meaning I never have to pay the donation, which can be steep. I sell about half my tickets every year. There is NEVER a problem finding a buyer. It's a hot ticket and I can make up a lot of the cost I spend on the season tickets. College football is fun.

GM, I understand why you like it. Hard not to, and I have no doubt I'd have a blast if I went to a game or two there. I mentioned that I wanted to hit a game during my time here awhile back and you mentioned having sold off all your tickets this year and that getting tix for games would be near impossible or outrageously expensive. So, I'm saying what makes it awesome for you to be a season ticket holder wouldn't be awesome for everyone else right now.

Tickets aren't going to be as cheap as you're making them out to be for someone who wants to buy tickets now. You also mentioned several times that there are lots of blowouts and when that happens, you just go to watch the game in the beer garden. Well, knowing up front that there will be lots of blowouts and the beer garden is the place to be when that happens, it seems someone buying in now could anticipate having to drive a ways to get there and back, plus barely even spending much time in the stadium.

I don't have any kids so that's not a consideration for me. I don't have any allegiance with the Ducks or the Pac-12 either. When I go to a game without a rooting interest, I generally prefer it to be competitive so half the crowd doesn't leave or what not.

This came up when I mentioned there wasn't a 2nd pro sports team in Portland. Univ. of Oregon was suggested as a viable alternative. I'm saying it's not as great of an option for an impartial sports fan who would be moving to the area.

Leaving work and my shopping list is the following:

Truffle Butter

Bud Light (to keep my white trash family away from my good beer)

Bottle of Red Wine (also for the white trash, could probably exchange the word Box for Bottle)

Bottle of Crown Reserve (to keep me entertained by the white trash family, but not expensive enough to get pissed when they start drinking it)

I have had six cups of hot tea today, mainly just so I could put the hot mug against my swollen eye. Jitters are kicking in.

Is Portland like Austin without the heat? Or is that Seattle?

Whichever one it is, I want to go there, and maybe never leave.

Fair points.

Any shtick ideas on how to tell our parents about our pregnancy? Right now, the idea is to start up a round of "what's everyone thankful for?" that will end with us handing a printout of the ultrasound to each parent at the table. Will be effective, but fairly lame.
