GM's thread about nothing (40 Viewers)

Ugh. My wife's entire family was in town from Michigan for the past week. Everything was going great. Until this morning. That is when our typically affable, easy going, laid back family dog snapped and bit my 2 year old nephew on the back of his ear. Drew blood. ####. Just....####. Thankfully, he just grazed him, but it was horrible and it has been a nightmare of a day. The boys (who love this dog) have been a wreck as they know we have to get rid of the dog. He's too much of a liability with our 7 month old daughter, not to mention the parade of neighborhood kids who come in and out of our house. My ex-wife has agreed to let him stay with her for now, but who knows if it will be permanent. It was her dog, but she left him with us when we moved into the house. I have never had any worries about him biting my sons and she doesn't have company over very often, so maybe this will work. The thought of taking him to the pound breaks my heart.Am I doing the right thing? I can't justify keeping this dog after today. Man, I'm a mess. :(

If a dog bites a kid on the face, that's a deal breaker. It just can't happen. What led up to the incident? Was it seemingly out of the blue, or was the kid messing with it in some unreasonable way, e.g. while it was eating or poking it in the eye or something?

What kind of dog? I have a poodle that snapped at my kid and I've never thought of getting rid of him.

Nothing that we can put our finger on. He wasn't eating, the kid wasn't provoking him, he just got up into his personal space and BAM. The dog just snapped and bit him. I was right there, so I grabbed the child immediately, then took the dog outside. He knew he was in trouble. Hid behind a bush. When we first moved in, he growled and snapped at a child during a party, but he didn't bite. We kept an eye on it and had not seen ANYTHING in months that would indicate he was going to actually bite. My ex-wife says he never demonstrated any behavior like that when she owned him, but she didn't get him as a puppy. He was a rescue dog, so who knows what his puppy life was like. Yeah, bite to the head is a deal breaker. God this sucks. I really like this dog. But if he does it again, I'll hate myself. He's very protective of my wife the baby and the boys. I don't know...if I take him to the pound, he's a goner. He looks like Winston Churchill. Nobody will adopt him. I wish Homer was here to hold me.

Sorry man. Legally speaking, at least in my state, once a dog has been known to bite, the owner is liable for any bites after that. Maybe don't tell the ex that.

He's a big boy. Golden Retriever/Rottweiler mix. I'm guessing the Rott is what came out today. This was more than a snap. There was blood on the back of the kid's ear. This could have been bad. He bites a kid in the neighborhood and I might get sued.

She knows what happened and has been very nice to offer up her place for now, but it's not a guarantee that she'll be able to keep him long term. The townhouse owner might tell her she can't keep him. If we keep him here, it's an insult to my wife's family and a huge HUGE risk for us.God, he's just sitting here staring at me with this big goofy look on his face.

Yeah, you've got to get rid of him. He may just not like small kids which is not uncommon; they're unpredictable and don't understand boundaries, are high energy, noisy, etc. I hope your ex can keep him, but if not you're going to have to take him to the pound and also disclose why you're doing it so another family with kids doesn't run into this problem if they adopt him.I'd also explain why this is happening to your kids. It's painful, but it's an important lesson and maybe it'll motivate them to pay attention to how to train and socialize dogs and respect their boundaries in the future. I'm sorry this happened. That really sucks.

Can't you just make him an outside dog?
I don't know. Portland is not a great environment for dogs to be outside in the cold and the rain most of the winter. My backyard has horrible drainage, so it's like a swamp whenever it rains. I have to wipe his paws every time he comes inside. He's very dainty. He'll pick up his paws for me and lick my ear when I wipe him down. Such a sweet dog with me, but the incident today changes everything. Thanks for letting me vent.

So once again we are last to get food. As we are waiting in line,we are informed they have run out. Dont worry, every single Scout leader had his fill. As they made the anouncement, one of them looks at his empty plate, puts his hands on his belky and says "well Im full". It took everything I had to not punch the fat #### in the back of the head. So my boys had plain white bread for dinner. Not even buttered.

Man, I think you should give him another chance. No telling what the 2 yo did.

Use this as a learning opportunity: "son, lazy old white men don't care about people like you."

Damn, bro - sorry. I love animals, but agree with Tatum that you need to move the pooch. Any chance you know someone who will take him?

I want to. I do. I've cried more today than I have in years because I love this dog. But if he does it again, I'll never be able to live with myself for not doing anything when I had a chance. I'm hoping that by going to my ex-wife's place, he'll still be able to play with the boys and he has been nothing but a gentle giant with them. Maybe we can time share him or something...make sure he's gone when other people are over at our house. My ex and I only live a mile apart. Still, I worry that he's going to snap and bite my daughter when she's walking. He could really do some damage.

Gotta disagree here, GB. The answer is that the two-year old did that two-year olds do, and you can't allow that to happen again. If it was something that was readily identifiable and unique, like invading his space while he's eating (but there are no, and I mean zero other problems), then you can maybe decide to keep the dog and simply feed him in isolation, like alone in the garage or something.

But this is a house with a young child who's getting more mobile by the day and that regularly has other kids visiting. You simply can't have that risk, and that's before you even think about the potential liability to GM given the prior bite incidents.

Geekgasm.
I wrote a final exam on Beloved for a Contemporary American Lit class while stoned out of my gourd. I think I was the only one who chose Beloved out of all the books we wrote that semester but I felt like in my current state of mind I totally grokked it. Turns out I did because I got an A :bowtie:

It's likely not any consolation but my wife and I got a full blooded Rottie when we got married. About a year later we had our first son, and about 2 years later we had our second son. Our Rottie started grumbling (sort of like growling, but no mouth movement) around son #1 occasionally. As time went on it became more frequent, and we did everything we could to associate son #1 with him including giving treats, throwing his ball for him, going on walks with him etc. By the time son #2 was 10mths old he full on growled at son #1 teeth barred just for walking by him. And that was it, contacted the breeder and she came and got him. It was heartbreaking so I feel your pain.

Nice huh? Mrs. Slb keeps looking at me because she knows im about to snap. Six families didnt get food. Of course there was plenty of salad left so I got that. Words will be said before we leave. Im ####### pissed.

I'll say it again: wow.
She's also weirdly obsessed with the Twilight movies. Not the books, mind you, but the movies. She thinks they are the most romantic thing of all time and doesn't understand how anyone could disagree. How obsessed? For summer vacation the year after the first movie came out, she loaded the husband and adopted kids in to the car and drove from Houston to Washington to see "where the movie was made."
Forks, WA? lolThere is nothing there.

Good. You should be. That's ridiculous.

Birthday party time... I literally only know the birthday girl and her fiancé, so not sure if it'll be that late of a night. Last year at her party, I ended up chatting up with a really short, cute pixie of a girl (I think I may have posted pics of her in here). She had some sort of hormone issue when she was younger that inhibited her growth, so she was seriously short and tiny  While we were chatting, I gave her my phone to put her number in... Unfortunately, she was drunk at the time and accidentally wrong numbered me. Sorry guy that I texted the next day. Come to find out, she's a bit f'd in the head, so I'm not necessarily heartbroken that she won't be there this year.

I appreciate it, man. He's never shown any sort of aggression towards us, but he grumble/growls at others when they come over to the house until he warms up to them. We were talking about him last night and commented how great he was all week with my wife's family in town. And then this morning, BAM. He just sapped and bit and it was awful. Glad my nephew is okay, but he drew blood and that just can't happen. He LOVES my boys. LOVES them. Let's them crawl all over him, gentle as can be. It was very sad this morning watching them hug and hold him, tears flowing. This is the part of parenting that doesn't make it into the books you read.

That really sucks. I can't imagine it's easy to have the conversation with kids.

Definitely agree with Bob and Abraham, but I also understand the legal issues. Sorry GM.GMTAN pet news is at an all time low. :sadbanana:

Damnit, now I keep seeing GM as Ned Stark with his daughter's dire wolf, with me yelling at the TV "don't do it! Don't do it!"There's got to be a better solution. Would the wife's family really be INSULTED if you didn't get rid of the family dog? That sounds a bit small of them.

I don't know, honestly. That was just my editorial on the matter. I wouldn't fault them if they had an issue with it, but I don't really know how they feel. They all left today for Michigan and know that this is a horrible thing to deal with. I just can't trust him anymore. Ex-wife taking him might be the right move for now. We'll see how it goes tonight. If we don't do anything, complacency will set in and we'll go back to our normal life and we'll hum along just fine...until he snaps and bites again and then what?

My mom thinks we should keep him, FWIW. But she and my dad kept our family dog (tarbaby, no shtick) who bit me below the eye when I was 8, then bit my hand a few years later. I had to get stitches on my face and was scared when he bit my hand that my parents would get rid of the dog. So I said nothing and it got majorly infected. They still kept the dog. And he then bit neighbors and my aunt. They finally put him down at 15 years of age. She's not the best judge here. She would join PETA tomorrow if it didn't mean turning in her republican card.

Looks like I'm officially FBG Cornholing with Steve Tasker this year at Bonnaroo. :banned: We're planning to meet either in Memphis or Nashville then camp out for 4 days straight drinking heavily with thousands of dirty hippies on a farm in the middle of nowhere.
can vouch for Tasker
