It (unfortunately) will be passed eventually anyway but props to her for bringing attention to this disgrace of a bill.
Texas is every other year, so I wouldn't be too sure about that. Won't be in session again until 2015.
Did not know that. Thanks for the insight. Keep it going for 2 more hours!

That's great insight if you ignore the fact that the Legislature is now in Special Session, which Governor Perry can call for 30 days at any point in time on any issue that he sees as an "emergency." Abortion legislation was declared an emergency for this Special Session. Theoretically, even if she made it to midnight, he could just call them back into Special Session for another 30 days starting later this week.

Which would be typical of an as swipe like perry. "Uh, we didn't get anything done during the session so I'm using more taxpayer money to keep it going!"

Looks like every (D) fella and lady there is going to take as much time as they can to hang up on parliamentary questions.

Nights like this make me so glad that I don't work at the Capitol in Austin any more.
Me too. I lost all faith in government during my two session sentence there.
I did 97-01 pretty seriously and 03-07 on a more limited basis. I'm still pretty sure we crossed paths at some point.LOOK, IT'S MICHAEL IRVIN'S LAWYER!!!!!
99 to 02 for me as aide to Craddick prior to his speakership. Aside from the private bathroom and meeting delay and w and getting drunk with **** Armey it was awful.

Serious question - I've never worked in politics, but this seems like everything that would be AWESOME about working in politics. Didn't you LOVE stuff like this? Isn't this fun? No?
No. It sucks. It's disingenuous and none of then are trying to do anything for the people. They are trying to win and collect favors along the way to winning. It's awful.

This is pretty good stuff, but seeing these personalities again bring back some bad memories. It also reminds me of the hours and hours and hours we used to sit around waiting for something to happen.Edit - And what Abe said about grandstanding to the base and the fact that these guys are all serving their own political interest and not that of the state.

That's the worst part of Texas legislation. They literally do nothing for weeks and weeks and then everyone sulks and complains about how hard the job is in the last two weeks whine they work 16 hour days to do all the stuff they should have been doing all along.

Abe and Bentley - what percentage of staff would you say were true believers v political junkies/just wanted to win/thought the game was fun? Same question about the actual politicians?

The best night was when Denise Davis quit as parliamentarian when your old boss was in the Chair and Terry Keel just happened to be standing by waiting to take over.

I am so confused. Parliamentary procedure always seemed stupid to me. I think the chick in the white is the only one who knows what is going on.

Off the top of my head I'd guess that 20% are true believers across the board. There are also people who see it as a way to accumulate power (the biggest percentage of the electeds), political junkies who think it's fun, people who put in a few sessions so they can become rich once they retire from the legislature and become lobbyists and everything else in between.

I joined as a true believer. I really wanted to work in politics and be part of the process to change things. Not because I was compassionate but because I liked the idea of Having influence. I was big in political groups in high school and college and never doubted that my path was to be part of it.

Maybe Washington is different. Or maybe not. Texas is run by a handful of men that drink Scotch at the Headliners club and the Cloak room. And the new blood intent on changing thing shows up and falls in awe with that group of men hoping to ascend the ranks. Rinse and repeat.

I once crafted a constituent survey that had 28 questions about issues important to texans. Question 29 was about gambling. 30 was about homosexuality/sodomy. Boss deleted both from the survey because "as long as I'm here we aren't going to discuss those things. I don't care what the people think of it, I'm not changing my mind so we aren't asking their opionions."

It's about power and Having it and hanging on to it until you decide who to anoint as your new mouthpiece. Sucks.
