God in the old testament (1 Viewer)

It's not black and white, absurd or not. Sure, from my point of view, belief in any god is to a certain extent, absurd, but I understand it. Belief that Noah's flood actually happened is a whole different level.
Pretty much every ancient civilization in the world has a flood story.I personally believe something major went down and if I had to wager, my money would be on the Biblical account being most accurate. But I'm not going to say I know for sure. Whether 100% factual or mostly symbolic, there is a lot of truth in the Biblical account of Noah regarding the relationship between God and man.
Do you believe a man built a boat and took two of each animal on it, thereby saving them from the flood?
easy, the solution was that Noah carbon froze all the animals ala Han Solo.

As a former Baptist that grew up reading the Bible a lot, to now an agnostic....

The Old Testament is nothing more than interesting stories that are based entirely on the Israelites and the surrounding tribes and cultures. It's a very narrowly focused and regionalized historical account of that period of history. The passage of stories and beliefs through verbal storytelling no doubt embellished the accounts. And as with most primitive cultures, their is a need to identify their creation, and a God is a very simple explanation. Countless numbers of cultures came to the same 'god' conclusion, and they did so becasuse it was simple and convenient, and also a way to create and enforce justice and judgement systems. I do think there is a basis to most of the Old Testament stories, but they are being told in what was an entertaining way, and thus sensationalism is prevelant.

Let's say the Old Testament was never written. People of the world would still dispute the existence of a God (or gods). Nobody can yet answer how something came from nothing (and yes, I've read tons of scientific journals). Whether one believe in God or not is a rather meaningless discussion anyway. I could care less if someone is atheist. Doesn't really affect me. Heck, I'm pretty much sold on the fact their are hundreds if not thousands of other "Earths" out there, and where humans stand amongst all the creatures of the the universe is unknown. Maybe we are at the top, maybe we are at the bottom (and the Q is going to take us down). 10,000 years from now someone may know, but not in my lifetime. So why worry about it.

I find the New Testament more perplexing. Different topic.

I guess this is as good a place to put this as any. Ken Ham is very upset about the movie Noah:

Friends, I just arrived home after seeing the Hollywood (Paramount) movie NOAH tonight. It is MUCH much worse than I thought it would be. Much worse.

The Director of the movie, Darren Aronofsky has been quoted in the media as saying NOAH is ‘the least biblical biblical film ever made’, I agree wholeheartedly with him.

I am disgusted. I am going to come right out and say it-it is disgusting and evil-paganism! Do you really want your family to see a pagan movie the has Noah as some psychopath who says if his daughter-in-law’s baby is a girl, he will kill it as soon as it’s born. And then when two girls are born, bloodstained Noah (the man the Bible calls righteous Noah-Genesis 7:1), brings a knife down to one of the baby’s heads to kill it and at the last minute doesn't do it-and then a bit later says he failed because he didn't kill the babies. How can we recommend this movie and then speak against abortion! Psychopathic Noah sees humans as a blight on the planet and wants to rid the world of people.

I feel dirty-as if I have to somehow wash the evil off me.

I cannot believe there are Christian leaders who have recommended people see this movie.

It’s as if someone heard the name Noah, that there was a Flood and and Ark and then made a pagan movie up about it. I don’t think there is anything else that really has to do with the Bible’s account except some names of people! Methuselah is some sort of witchdoctor who can do magical things.

There is so much more I could say about it-so much more. And what’s with the bizarre fallen angels being living rocks helping Noah??

I suggest you join us tomorrow night for our live stream at 8 pm EST. A number of AiG researches watched the movie tonight and four of us will be on the live stream to explain what we saw and heard.

I am SO GLAD my wife did not come with me to see this-she would have been terribly upset.

I feel violated as a Christian.

Regardless of what others say-I just had to come right out and say this.

Oh-it is also a boring movie-yes boring! Worst movie I think I've ever seen.

That’s my personal take-join us tomorrow night for our discussion of NOAH.

The movie begins with (and has the same statement later on):

‘In there beginning there was nothing’

The Bible states ‘In the beginning God.’

That really sums up the difference!

This review is really going to drag down its RT average.

I guess this is as good a place to put this as any. Ken Ham is very upset about the movie Noah:
He may be happier with this one, reviewed on the same site: Persecuted

NASHVILLE – It seems that art could be imitating life in the not-so-distant future in the upcoming movie “Persecuted.”

“Persecuted” opens May 9 in theaters. The star-studded film portrays evangelist John Luther as the only remaining obstacle to vast “reforms” to freedom of religion and speech. A senator frames Luther for the murder of a teenage girl in this political thriller, opening the way for unprecedented persecution against Christians in America. The fugitive sets out to clear his name.

The film stars James Remar (“X-Men: First Class”) as John Luther, as well as Fred Thompson, Tennessee’s former U.S. senator, as Dr. Charles Luther. Bruce Davison (“X-Men”) plays the senator. Other stars include Dean Stockwell, Brad Stine and Raoul Trujillo.

“Persecuted” is “The Fugitive” with a dose of what-if. Just imagine an America in which the government coerces Christians to conform. (Hello, Christian bakers forced out of business for refusing to service a gay wedding, or Hobby Lobby being ordered to pay for contraceptives for employees.)

The film is the brainchild of Daniel Lusko, the writer, director and producer. He told Tennessee Christian News recently that he had the vision for the film five years ago – it woke him up in bed.

He likens Luther to a modern-day Billy Graham, but at a time when the Gospel is unwelcome in the culture. Luther stands in the way of new hate crime legislation. He faces immense pressure to support the bill, even by his own ministry. Framed for the murder, he goes on the run.

“The movie relates to Americans who hold a belief sacred, if you stand up and pay a price,” Lusko said. “At the end of the day, the movie forces you to ask that question: What do I really believe?”

“Persecuted” does not have a political agenda,” he said. “It’s not left or right. The characters are not partisan. But what’s happening to America is unbelievable,” Lusko added, mentioning the IRS targeting conservative groups, NSA spying on Americans and the Obamacare mandates.
Lusko shared a reaction from one screening in New Mexico. A gruff-looking man stopped him, said he had fought for his nation, and saw men die. “I believe you understand what America is about,” the man told him.

“This country needs to turn back to God,” Lusko said.

Lusko said he received a favorable reception from the National Prayer Caucus.

“What if a pastor gave an altar call by saying you might go to jail or you might die,” Lusko said. “People would think more carefully.”

Franklin Graham told him that there would be a winnowing of the church eventually, Lusko said, and added that he hopes “Persecuted” gets people to ask questions and to decide what they believe.

Lusko said he has been stonewalled by mainstream Christianity because people want to stay asleep and say that everything is OK, making it hard for him to bring the film to theaters.

Another right winger that believes they are above the fray of partisan politics?

I might have to go see that Persecuted movie for laughs. It sounds like it might be one of the worst films in several years.

It sounds like a gem.

About 150 people attended the Friday-night screening, and responded eagerly to the producers’ plea to help them promote the film. Unlike Son of God, which debuted last weekend in 3,260 theaters across the country, grossing $26.5 million, Persecuted is very much a do-it-yourself affair. Without studio backing, the producers said, they need supporters to pre-purchase at least 500 tickets per city just to be able to fund a weeklong screening.

Daniel Lusko, the movie’s writer and director, told me he was an admirer of Alfred Hitchcock, and aimed to emulate his work. But Persecuted is more like a made-for-TV melodrama than The Man Who Knew Too Much. It is rife with ham-fisted symbolism—Luther’s name is just one example—and plot twists that range from inexplicable to implausible. Imagine House of Cards for the religious set: that’s Persecuted.

The film opens with Luther (James Remar, who played the father of a serial killer on the Showtime drama Dexter) refusing a last-ditch effort of Senate Majority Leader Donald Harrison (Bruce Davison, best known for his role as Sen. Robert Kelly in the X-Men movies) to convince him to endorse the Faith and Fairness Act, a bill that would give “equal time” to all religions. “I cannot water down the gospel to advance anyone’s political agenda,” Luther tells Harrison in one of many robotic pronouncements.

Furious, the senator dispatches what later is revealed to be a Secret Service agent to drug Luther and frame him for the rape and murder of a 16 year-old girl. Emerging from his stupor the next morning on a rural roadside, Luther discovers a massive manhunt for him is underway. He spends the remainder of the film attempting to prove his innocence and evading the government’s efforts to assassinate him.
