His album with Stan Getz is still one of my favorite jazz albums ever.

The Brazilian singer and composer João Gilberto, one of the pioneers of bossa nova, died in Rio de Janerio on Saturday, according to Agencia Brasil, the country's official news agency.

He was 88. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Gilberto was a giant of bossa nova, and is often credited with helping develop the sound of the genre that brought Brazilian music to the world.

The musician's famous collaboration with the American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, "Getz/Gilberto," won album of the year at the Grammy Awards in 1965. It's still only one of a few jazz albums to do so, according to Columbia University's Department of Music, which awarded Gilberto an honorary doctorate of music in May 2017.

Got me to wondering which other jazz albums won album of the year.  Need to research that, but it must be pretty incredible company.

Not many old school jazz legends left.

also, the jazz albums to win album of the year aren’t as impressive as one might want. Getz/Gilberto is the best of those few albums.

The Getz/Gilberto record is one of those that takes me back to a very specific time in my life. I’ll never forget that record playing over and over during a great week I spent with great friends at Playa Mazunte in 2001.

Y'know, one day, Joao Gilberto will be dead, and you'll say, "Oh, yes, I've been listening to his work for years."

I went through the list. Wow, you ain’t kidding.

I suppose in some respects it makes sense, as most of my favorite jazz albums were all made way back when.

And people enjoy bad music.

RIP to an apparently supremely talented musician. I have little to add that those into jazz cannot already.

I also must say to Osaurus that empanadas rule.

Jobim the mind, Joao the pulse, Astrud the voice of bossa nova - the dance that soothes the soul. RIP, Senhor Gilberto.

The Grammys have had some great picks but lots of duds as well imo
