Going off of soda today cold turkey... (1 Viewer)

Wow. I have no idea how some can drink that much soda in a day. Don't your teeth feel like they're going to fall out? At work I probably drink a gallon of water then at lunch maybe unsweetened iced tea. Only time I drink coke is with rum so maybe 2 liters a night

Wasn't really a fan of unsweet tea, but with lemon it's pretty good. Takes a little getting used to, but very refreshing. I drink Arnold Palmers sometimes (I am not 70+ fwiw) but my mix is 75% tea and 25% lemonade. I think sweet tea in the south might be the worst think someone could ever consume. Good for you for kicking that #### to the curb.
Yeah I will do mostly tea with a few splashes of lemonade which basically replaces the added sugar and lemon. Good stuff.

Arizona Tea actually makes a pretty good zero-calorie AP you can buy at Target (and I assume grocery stores nationwide).

When I do drink some kind of soda (which is rare), I don't go near diet ever. You need a chemistry degree to figure out what the hell is in it. Reminds me a lot of the whole margarine/butter debate. Will go butter every time.

I'll lead with this ... canned diet Coke has got to be the nastiest drink on the planet. I really only like Coke from a fountain to begin with... add in the diet element out of a can and holy moly. I had 3 sips and tossed it.

I eat fast food 2-3 times a week and will do at least 24 oz while at lunch. Cherry Coke or Mtn. Dew typically.

I'll have 4-5 cans of Sprite at home every week. So, about 10ish servings per week. Used to be much worse...

Won't ever cut it out - 100% back the "in moderation" thing. Not sure if 10 servings per week constitutes moderation but it's better than what I used to do. :oldunsure:
"in moderation" for me meant losing 1 pound a week instead of 1.5 to 2. you can call it whatever you like, but eating fast food 2-3 times a week will never get you anywhere near the definition of healthy.
Not to mention 10 servings of sugary soda per week.
 It's "in moderation" compared to the OP and where I used to be with 3-4 servings/day.

Man there are some ornery mofos up in here.
its not "in moderation", nowhere near it. it's eating like a fat guy.
Good thing I'm not fat.
As an apparent fat guy, I know fat guys.

Unsweetened iced tea is a fantastic replacement.
Yep. Although health-wise water only is the best followed by black coffee.
Do some research on Bulletproof coffee. Heard the guy behind it on a Joe Rogan podcast. Worth a listen.
Care to cliff's notes it for me?
Saw someone on Fallon taking about it...some actress or singer. Its basically coffee with butter and coconut oil added. http://jezebel.com/butter-in-your-coffee-the-bulletproof-craze-explained-1591594091

So it's been one day in. I wanted to fall asleep at my desk from 2-4pm and was crazy hungry for dinner. I did drink about 50-60 ounces of water throughout the day.

This evening I've had a headache and felt irritable. I'm ready to crash now and it's only 9:15.

You are physiologically addicted to sugar.

Sounds like you should try going off of turkey cold soda.

In a nutshell he is a guy that has had all kinds of food allergies, 1 kidney, and was highly sensitive to food toxins. He sought out a diet, and coffee with minimal toxins. It turns out +90% of coffee has a fungus with a microtoxin. Most people can filter it out without a problem, but your liver is still having to do extra work. The same with anything with corn. RoundUp is apparently responsible for creating super fungus that is on almost everything.I only brought it up because you said black coffee next to water health wise. It would depend on the coffee. The EU actually has higher standards on coffee products than we do, so the coffee they can't sell their goes to like US hospitals.

I am by no means an expert, so if anyone wants to check it out themselves here is the site.

I know you said you don't "want to do coffee" but having a cup of black coffee will help curb that headache. And it's zero calories. It seems like kicking caffeine and sugar, especially when you're knocking back that much daily, would be better served by eliminating one then the other.

Arnold Palmer is an abomination of a drink. Pick one or the other.
and to think I thought we were friends.it's only the greatest drink ever.

and on a nice summer day. Some Jeremiah ' s sweet tea vodka and lemonade can't be beat

Try drinking hot tea if you're looking to improve your energy levels. It's caffinated and there are also lots of health benefits that'll go along with it.

Feeling pretty good this morning I don't feel like I need a Coke yet. However I did get a pretty good night sleep which helps.

As far as coffee and tea go, I just hate the taste. I feel like coffee is just bitter as all get out without all the sugar, which I'm trying to avoid. And I have never liked the taste of any tea.

I shook soda for little while a couple of months ago when I was doing the Paleo diet, so I know this can be done. It was just after I was done with that diet, I jumped back in with both feet and have been on a freight train of cola ever since.

How old are you?

switch to diet. i lost 60 lbs. all while drinking 2-3 cans a day. all the people and articles saying diet soda doesnt help weight loss are full of ####. sure, my teeth may fall out and it might give me cancer, but that's a different issue.
I'm the same way. Lost 45 pounds getting off of regular soda. I don't miss it too much. Every so often, if we're out to dinner I'll get a real Coke.
Wow, I switched a long time ago and you couldn't pay me to drink regular soda. Tastes terrible to me now.
Interesting. I miss the taste. Not like a craving or addiction. I'm happy drinking my Vanilla Coke Zero. But when we're out, and I get a Mountain Dew or Coke, the flavor is amazing. I know why I used to drink so many.

Except for an occasional Jack & Coke I have not drank a soda in over 10 years. When thirsty it never even enters my thought process.

A guy I used to work with would drink Dew like water though. First thing in the morning he would kill a Dew, then all day long. Went through at least a couple of 2 liters a day.

I was a huge caffeine fiend and when I quit, I had the same thing you're going through. If I remember correctly, it only lasted a couple of days. Like 2 or 3. After that, I was fine.

So hang in there, GB. You're half way there. Probably*.

Finally quit Dew when I read about BVO in it.

Now I read that BVO is being removed.

“Social media has played a large role in consumer awareness of food and beverage ingredients,” said Marlena Hidlay, associate marketing manager at DSM. “We’ve seen videos, consumer petitions and news releases targeting specific ingredients.”

That’s what happened two years ago with brominated vegetable oil (B.V.O.) used in lemon lime Gatorade and other citrus beverages. A 15-year-old Mississippi girl questioned its inclusion in her favorite yellow sports beverage and took to the Internet, first to find out that B.V.O. contains bromine, an element found in flame ######ants and associated with causing everything from neurological damage to skin lesions, then to discover that the European Union and Japan have both banned B.V.O. as a food ingredient. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes B.V.O. as safe.

The teenager returned to the Internet in late 2012 to start an on-line petition requesting PepsiCo, Purchase, N.Y., to remove it from one of the beverage giant’s largest brands. She was successful. The petition received more than 200,000 signatures within months and by January 2013, PepsiCo announced the phasing out of B.V.O from Gatorade, but not Mountain Dew.

“Because of the consumer hysteria social media often creates, many companies will reformulate products, removing the ingredients under attack,” Ms. Hidlay said.

In May 2014, The Coca-Cola Co., Atlanta, announced it will remove B.V.O. from all of its beverages by the end of the year. Following this announcement, PepsiCo stated it also was phasing B.V.O. out of all its beverages.

Such a response is not always the logical approach. Formulators must remember why the ingredient was added, as it might be a critical component of the formulation in terms of quality, safety and shelf life. The B.V.O. served an important function in citrus beverages — emulsification of the citrus oils. It cannot be removed without being replaced.

Interestingly, in many applications it is being swapped with sucrose acetate isobutyrate and glycerol ester of rosin, either alone or in combination. The ingredients are no more kindly named than B.V.O., but they do not contain compounds also found in fire ######ant. For some, this swap exemplifies a cleaner label. Others may want more.

“We have developed a high-efficiency emulsifier that is a naturally derived from the quillaja tree endemic to the country of Chile, that is extracted using certified sustainable agriculture practices,” Mr. Ferrey said. “This novel emulsifier allows higher oil loads (e.g. natural oil-based colors, flavors, essences or nutrients as omega-3, conjugated linoleic acid, vitamins and more) for clear beverages and concentrates, as well as functions as a replacement for B.V.O., propylene glycol, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or other weighting agents.” Labeled as quillaja extract, it functions forming micelles to stabilize emulsions. “This is accomplished by the active component in quillaja, the surfactant saponin,” Mr. Ferrey said. “Because the saponin rapidly forms micelles around oil droplets once they are mixed together, the quillaja extract has the ability to emulsify three to four times the oil load than traditional systemswithout increasing the overall viscosity or contributing cloudiness,it also offers stability across a broad range of pH levels and temperatures. We have other ingredients derived from quillaja that also enhance and increase foam stability in beverage systems, such as root beer, smoothies, protein shakes, slushy-type products and some alcoholic beverage applications.”

 anecdotally, you're right. I just like coffee way too much to stop drinking it.

Yeah, I'm not advocating that anyone should quit. I'm just saying that since he is, here's what he can look forward to.

My brother went off all soda's/soft drinks a while back. He told me that he had one randomly months later and it screwed him all up, made him feel really weird for about a day.

then what happened?
He started a revolution in Central Africa. Things got a little messy after that.

I tried to tell him that a few Frescas were ok now and then, but he just looked at me with the crazy eyes in his jungle hide out and said, "The Hires. The Hires...", so I just backed away. We don't talk much anymore.
