Goodell says league will look into playing (1 Viewer)

In Feb. the average temp in London is a high of 44 and low of 32. Where is this game going to be played? If it's outdoors it opens the door for a lot of cities wanting the Super Bowl.

The more I think about it, the more I actually like this idea. And playing the SB in London would not just be about showcasing the sport to Europe. They can already see it on TV. It's more about showcasing how elite of a league the NFL has become. The Premiership doesn't play soccer games in the US to popularize the sport here. They do it because they can. London, along with NYC and a handful of other cities, is one of the capitals of the world. Hosting the game in London tells the world that the NFL is elite. We already know that it in the US, but Goodell wants the rest of the world to know it too if they don't already.
Rather than rewarding an American football city - whose taxpayers have likely dumped tens or hundreds of millions in taxdollars into stadiums - lets send tens of millions, maybe billions, of revenues overseas to show the world the NFL is elite. :goodposting:
The average taxpayer gets nothing for the Superbowl being held in their city. So I'm not really sure where you are going here. Yes the game supposedly brings in a ton of revenue for the host city, but it doesn't go back to you or me. It goes to the corporations. And most of that revenue probably doesn't stay in the city. Plus the host city probably has to spend a ton of money to prepare for the game too. Do they lower your taxes after the Superbowl leaves town? No. The only point to make here is that taxpayers should not have to pay for stadiums. In most cases, taxpayer supported stadiums do not generate notable economic or fiscal benefits to the city. I do see your point that at least they deserve a Superbowl for all that money spent on the stadium, but how many of those average Joe taxpayers would actually get to attend the game? They are going to watch it on TV whether it's across town or across the Atlantic Ocean.

I talked to someone who works with the NFL regarding this...his thoughts:

1) The ultimate goal is to expand the NFL fanbase internationally

2) The NFL wants to move 1 home game PER YEAR PER TEAM outside the US...London, Mexico, Canada, etc.

3) The NFL will expand rosters as a trade off with the Players Assoc to agree to #2

4) Teams/Owners will get paid the average of all their home games for the international game

5) A SB would only occur out of the country once every 10 years or so

We might as well accept it...this is going to happen.

It would have to kickoff at 1000 am in london for a 5 PM EST televison.
No, England is ahead. It would be 10:00 PM.I would, however, be thrilled if they made it a 7 PM local kickoff and put the game on at 2 PM ET in the States. Would make getting to work on Monday a lot easier.
I'm not watching the SB at 11am, thank you.
If that's the time they decide to play it, then yes you will.
