That Deadspin podcast included an argument about whether Goddell had a hand in Simmons's dismissal, or if Goddell was so concerned with looking good to the NY Times's Op-Ed page he didn't even notice who Simmons was.

Goodell is a lot of things, but thin-skinned isn't one of them. He gets booed mercilessly at the draft every year, and keeps smiling the whole time.

But he has no recourse in that situation.

I don't know anything for sure, I'm just speculating. I do know that the TNF game to open the season at Foxboro could be off the charts in terms of shtickery.

Being schticked boo-ed is also very different than being called a flat out liar and lacking testicular fortitude. There's nothing in Goodell's history that shows him to be thick-skinned. Hell, the past 4-5 years have been him reacting (in most cases badly) to every criticism levied at him.

I think someone just ranting against the NFL and owners won't be that much fun. Part of what made Simmons edgy was that he was given lines he couldn't cross, and would flirt with those lines often.

Just being another guy with a blog may limit his appeal.

 
Goodell being personally involved in this doesn't seem plausible to me. He's the commissioner of the biggest league in the country, making $44 million per year, constantly in board meetings and ever since Ray Rice dropped his wife in an elevator he's been on nonstop damage control for the league. I seriously doubt he's read one word Simmons has written, much less taken time out of day to tell ESPN to fire him.

 
Why would Goodell be different than every other person in the world?

He is finding out one way or another what people are saying/writing about him.

Listened to this today. I'll say this about Simmons: he's 25X better than either of those d-bags.

SI has learned that ESPN and Simmons have worked out an agreement that officially ends his tenure as a front-facing employee for ESPN. Simmons sent an email to Grantland staffers this week informing them that he would no longer be working for the site he founded in 2011. Simmons will also no longer do podcasts or appear on television for ESPN.

I was wondering if the deal allowed him to go somewhere else immediately or if he still needs to wait until his contract expires?

 
Figured this would happen. What happens now with Grantland. Do we see more of those writers go elsewhere? Does ESPN ignore it as an F U to Simmons? Does Simmons get a nice paid 4 month vacation?

ESPN has invested a ton of money into Grantland. I doubt they just let it die.

Simmons has a contract, so he has to be paid off. If reports of a $5 million salary are accurate, it amounts to about a 1.7 million dollar paid vacation.

I wonder if he goes on a social media blackout as well. Knowing him from the way he presents himself, I can't imaging him sitting idly for 4 months.

I presume that his continued payment is contingent on not disparaging the worldwide leader?

 
For me, one of Simmons' most memorable columns of the old BSG era was his breakdown of the Tom Cruise vehicle "Cocktail". I remember the article as being funny, original and perceptive, although who knows if that would be the case if I reread it today.

The Cruise character has a line in the film that goes "everything ends badly, otherwise it wouldn't end" which seems like a fitting epitaph for the Sportsguy's run at the network.

Simmons contract expires at the end of September, so his severance/paid vacation is actually just over $2 million!

Batard's piece went after the owners hardcore. Did not hold back. I mean the guy has some serious skins on the wall journalism wise, Simmons doesn't.

LeBatard has been saying similar (if not the exact same) things on his radio show for awhile now, so it's not like this is new. He has an ESPN "handler" on the show, so they know exactly what he's been saying.

I like this idea a lot.

Would much rather hear Jonah Keri and Ben Lindbergh talk MLB trends than Simmons and JackO talk Yankees/Sawx.

Dave Jacoby more than fills the reality TV appetite with Right Reasons.

Simmons's ability to pull A-lost guests will be missed, and the Cousin Sal NFL stuff was fun. Not sure who call fill the NFL podcast void at Grantland. Only thing I'm sure of is that it's not that charlatan Bill Barnwell.

LeBatard was also pretty critical of non-critical-thinking football fans in that piece. Non-critical-thinking football fans are ESPN's core audience. People who can't be bothered beyond calling for harsh discipline so they can get back to articles discussing their teams' third tight end.

To his credit, Simmons has addressed this issue, mostly from a viewpoint that he's like most fans -- he just can't help himself. No matter what kind of awful things happen in the sport, he'll continue to watch.
