That, his love of all things NBA and his wrestling infatuation has a lot to do with him losing me. (42yo)Love the NBA love the Celtics. Can't get through all the movies reality TV talk. So I don't read or listen to him.Did Simmons have it right that all you sports dorks in your forties are also watching reality tv?That, his love of all things NBA and his wrestling infatuation has a lot to do with him losing me. Challenge rules.Over half of the Wagering thread is obsessed with The Challenge. It's flummoxing to everyone.
Goodell is a a Grade-A, massively inflamed a:$$hole and a thin-skinned p:u$$y, so I wouldn't be surprised either.I would be surprised if Goodell wasn't pushing for Simmons to be quieted/####-canned. I also wouldn't be surprised if he tried to block him from going to FOX.
That Deadspin podcast included an argument about whether Goddell had a hand in Simmons's dismissal, or if Goddell was so concerned with looking good to the NY Times's Op-Ed page he didn't even notice who Simmons was.I would be surprised if Goodell wasn't pushing for Simmons to be quieted/####-canned. I also wouldn't be surprised if he tried to block him from going to FOX.
Goodell is a lot of things, but thin-skinned isn't one of them. He gets booed mercilessly at the draft every year, and keeps smiling the whole time.Goodell is a a Grade-A, massively inflamed a:$$hole and a thin-skinned p:u$$y, so I wouldn't be surprised either.I would be surprised if Goodell wasn't pushing for Simmons to be quieted/####-canned. But he has no recourse in that situation.wildbill said:Goodell is a lot of things, but thin-skinned isn't one of them. Being schticked boo-ed is also very different than being called a flat out liar and lacking testicular fortitude. There's nothing in Goodell's history that shows him to be thick-skinned. Hell, the past 4-5 years have been him reacting (in most cases badly) to every criticism levied at him.But he has no recourse in that situation.wildbill said:Goodell is a lot of things, but thin-skinned isn't one of them. I don't know anything for sure, I'm just speculating. I do know that the TNF game to open the season at Foxboro could be off the charts in terms of shtickery.
I really think that is the endgame here. Anything else would be a sellout. It would be pretty fun if he starts his own site where he can just let loose with his own opinions.

I think someone just ranting against the NFL and owners won't be that much fun. Part of what made Simmons edgy was that he was given lines he couldn't cross, and would flirt with those lines often.I really think that is the endgame here. Anything else would be a sellout. It would be pretty fun if he starts his own site where he can just let loose with his own opinions.

Listened to this today. I'll say this about Simmons: he's 25X better than either of those d-bags.The deadspin podcast today was so good. They are LOVING this.
I love when Magery runs off his list of fictional Simmons friends names (Beef-o and the Squelch)
http://www.si.com/more-sports/2015/05/15/bill-simmons-done-espn-grantland-john-skipperThere will be no farewell columns, podcasts or television appearances for Bill Simmons on ESPN.
SI has learned that ESPN and Simmons have worked out an agreement that officially ends his tenure as a front-facing employee for ESPN. Simmons sent an email to Grantland staffers this week informing them that he would no longer be working for the site he founded in 2011. Simmons will also no longer do podcasts or appear on television for ESPN.
Did the link have more info or was that it? (when I click on it, it goes to a dead page).Richard Deitsch of SI:

ESPN has invested a ton of money into Grantland. I doubt they just let it die.Figured this would happen. What happens now with Grantland. Do we see more of those writers go elsewhere? Does ESPN ignore it as an F U to Simmons? Does Simmons get a nice paid 4 month vacation?
I wonder if he goes on a social media blackout as well. Knowing him from the way he presents himself, I can't imaging him sitting idly for 4 months.ESPN has invested a ton of money into Grantland. Simmons has a contract, so he has to be paid off. If reports of a $5 million salary are accurate, it amounts to about a 1.7 million dollar paid vacation.
Wasn't that originally a line in Ferris Bueller, or am I getting old?For me, one of Simmons' most memorable columns of the old BSG era was his breakdown of the Tom Cruise vehicle "Cocktail". I remember the article as being funny, original and perceptive, although who knows if that would be the case if I reread it today.
The Cruise character has a line in the film that goes "everything ends badly, otherwise it wouldn't end" which seems like a fitting epitaph for the Sportsguy's run at the network.
Great piece by Dan. I had intended to link it in the Brady thread but had to leave for lunch.roadkill1292 said:Not on Grantland but LeBatard just wrote a piece for ESPN that may actually have taken a deeper dig at the NFL than Simmons did in the podcast that got him suspended. Interesting that they would let him write that.
LeBatard didn't call Goodell a liar, back it up with nothing, then dare his bosses to punish him for it.roadkill1292 said:Not on Grantland but LeBatard just wrote a piece for ESPN that may actually have taken a deeper dig at the NFL than Simmons did in the podcast that got him suspended. LeBatard has been saying similar (if not the exact same) things on his radio show for awhile now, so it's not like this is new. He has an ESPN "handler" on the show, so they know exactly what he's been saying.Ah, I missed that.LeBatard didn't call Goodell a liar, back it up with nothing, then dare his bosses to punish him for it.roadkill1292 said:Not on Grantland but LeBatard just wrote a piece for ESPN that may actually have taken a deeper dig at the NFL than Simmons did in the podcast that got him suspended. He was on LeBatard's show last Thursday (I think) in the first time in forever. My guess is he shows up more there now.Kinda sucks that we're not gonna get anymore Haralabob podcasts for the foreseeable future.
I like this idea a lot.Lowe/Haralabos telling each other what they had for breakfast would be good.![]()
That'd certainly be better than any more Lowe Post appearances by Van Gundy.Lowe/Haralabos telling each other what they had for breakfast would be good.![]()
LeBatard was also pretty critical of non-critical-thinking football fans in that piece. Non-critical-thinking football fans are ESPN's core audience. People who can't be bothered beyond calling for harsh discipline so they can get back to articles discussing their teams' third tight end.Batard's piece went after the owners hardcore. Did not hold back. I mean the guy has some serious skins on the wall journalism wise, Simmons doesn't.
Is this available for replay anywhere? He was on LeBatard's show last Thursday (I think) in the first time in forever. My guess is he shows up more there now.Kinda sucks that we're not gonna get anymore Haralabob podcasts for the foreseeable future.
